Not sure what you mean exactly...
You mean you want your 2oz bottle to contain 5% arbutin, 10% licorice powder, etc.?
Or do you have like pure 100% arbutin and you need to dilute it to only 5%? |

Ohhhh..
well then..
2 oz total
5% = 0.1oz
10% = 0.2
2% = 0.04
1% = 0.02
2% = 0.04
That's 0.4oz of actives and you'd have to fill the rest (1.6oz) in the bottle with other stuff. At least the math works this way! lol! |

Oh how I've sweated over this! Then I found this info on the GOW Forum thanks to someone called Traci - here's her instructions:
1) Let's say you want to find the % for 2 ounces of aloe juice that you want to include in your concoction that will be a total of 8 ounces. Divide 2 by 8 and move the decimal point 2 places to the right - that's your %!
2/8 = 0.25 = 25%
25% of your concoction is aloe juice!
Make sure the units are the same, i.e., adding ounces to ounces. before getting the %
If they are not, and you are adding, say, 1 teaspoon liquid to 8 ounces liquid, then you have to change the 8 ounces to teaspoons. Using this conversion: Ounce (liquid) = 6 teaspoons,
multiply the 8 ounces times the 6 teaspoons.
8 x 6 = 48 teaspoons
NOW divide the 1 teaspoon by the 48 teaspoons and move the decimal point to come up with the %.
1/48 = 0.02083 = 2.083% or just 2%
So 2% of the concoction is the 1 teaspoon ingredient.
2) Now the other way around. Lets say the recipe calls for 0.05% of an ingredient. First you need to know the total amount you want to end up with. Let's say 4 ounces. Move the decimal point 2 places to the left in the % number, and then multiply that times the 4 ounces.
0.05% = 0.0005
.0005 x 4 = 0.002
So you would need 0.002 ounces of the ingredient. That's a very small measurement, and needs to be converted to "drops." This conversion is not exact, but can be used: Ounce (liquid) = 480 drops
Multiply the 0.002 times the 480 to find how many drops.
0.002 x 480 = 0.96
You would need 0.96 drops, which is almost 1 drop.
So, 0.05% of the ingredient in 4 ounces of finished product is 1 drop!
Here is a handy calculator where you can convert ounces to teaspoons:
http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/gram_calc.htm
So for your 2% of glucosamine in a 2oz solution:
0.02 x 2 = 0.04oz
go to gourmetsleuth calculator and covert the 0.04oz to teaspoons:
Answer = .24tspn. which would be about 1/4 tspn.
Disclaimer!: I am the biggest maths dummy on the planet, so if I've got this all wrong please let me know because this is how I've been working it out for my serums.

I don't know what GOW is, so please tell me! I've been reading that Arbutin can help with hyperpigmentation. I have melasma, and have been trying all sorts of stuff. I don't want to use hydroquinone (I did try it, and didn't seem to help anyway). So where do you get arbutin?
Please do tell!
Thanks! |

From the ingredients, it looks like a lightening something or other. Have you made it? Is it working? Please let me know! Oh, and I looked all over, and figured out what GOW is. I'm about to order some Arbutin! |

Herama, I just received some Arbutin gel in an order from Platinum Skin care. They also sell it on the Skin Actives site. I've visited Garden of Wisdom, know it's a highly regarded site, but I've not had any luck in communicating with them.
I've decided to test the gel against Porcelana cream (which contains hydroquinone, and gets mixed reviews) by applying one on my right arm, and the other on my left arm twice a day. If there's anything to report, I'll post it here. I've also gotten religious about applying good sunblock, even if I'm not planning to go out all day.
Keliu, that's great info to have on hand. Thanks for sharing it. |

Well, I've been using 3-4% arbutin in my vitamin c serum, and can't say that I've noticed any lightening. Most unfortunate. And that's in combination with using an azelaic acid cream (Skinoren) AND Retin A. Sigh. It's winter, and has been overcast/rainy the past week or so here, so my skin is getting lighter now. But even with 30+ physical sunblock on, once I'm iun the sun, even winter sun, the spots darken again.
Sigh. Anybody have luck using arbutin to lighten melasma? |

Does it mean that the % is determined by weight? and not volume?
since I found many recipes called for 'teaspoon' or 'drop' etc.. it means it's determined by volume....
will it be accurate if I use weight instead of volume?

rollergal, volume has weight. A teaspoon is 5 ml. There is no difference. It's the same as any recipe for cooking. Some are given in measurements such as mls or oz while others are given in measuring tools such as teaspoons and cups. I think it's important to use the same tools or measures for each ingredient. If you measure 5ml with a teaspoon and then 10 ml with a medicine glass, it may not be the same. HTH |

Please help.... my head is spinning trying to figure out calculations here!
I am going to add some actives to a base cream. Two separate creams.
Cream #1: Aiming for 5% concentration on Arbutin and 0.5% of Niacinamide in a 2 ounce base cream. How many teaspoons for each?
Cream #2: Just adding CoenzymeQ10 into 2 ounces of base cream. I need 0.5% of CoenzymeQ10. How much is that?
I think what is throwing me is because the actives are measured in grams.
Thanks for any help on this!

If you figure on US measurements roughly it's 6 teaspoons per ounce. Can you figure it from there? |
