Have you done it yourself? Are there do it yourself hair products that can do this? Or do you have to go to a salon? Can it be done with one application?
I'm thinking of going from light/medium brown to a medium blonde. |

I colour my own hair - but it can be fraught with difficulty. I have very short mousy coloured hair to which I add blond highlights. I use a streaking cap and pull through strands of hair (this is a real pain to do but gives a good result). The bleach is then applied and I wrap foil around the cap (this mimics the effect of the foils that you get done at the hairdressers. By adding highlights this way, regrowth looks much better.
Supermarket hair dyes can be very effective, I've used them and don't have a problem with them. However, if you have longish hair and want to do the whole blond thing - I would definitely have it done at the hairdressers, at least the first time. Even all over blond hair looks better with some contrasting low-light tones and this is very difficult to achieve at home. And yes, it can be done with one application. |

My aunt dyes her hair at home (a dark copper-red tone) but that's mostly for covering her white/grey hairs. I don't really see the color working much for her other non-white/grey hairs. Plus she has to dye it every once a month or so to stop the color from fading...
So I think it's a lot better to do the hair dying at a salon, where it's mostly permanent colors and you won't have to do much to maintain the color. Especially when going from dark to light colors as probably some bleach/lightening products are needed... |

I highly recommend going to a salon for overall lightening... I know about 3 people that tried this on their own... all ended up going through varios stages of orange, peach (which was kind of pretty) and just a weird blech color.)
maybe you can do your own maintenance???
I color my hair... and it must be done every month because my hair grows VERY fast.... it's not the fade... it's the GREY...GREY..GREY roots.. uggg.. I'm too young for grey but started at 17... so here I am... |

sahmisme, Clairol has a product called Perfect 10 that can take you up a shade in 10 minutes. Sposed to be gentle. That way you could gradually go lighter..... |

Thanks everyone! I have done my own highlights, and I've done it myself when I've gone darker all over. I think I'm a little afraid to go blonde by myself, because of what fitmama said about it ending up orange. I've seen that happen. I'll ask at the salon, although they'll try to talk me out of it. My hair's not even really dark. |

Okay so I went and stripped my color. As expected it's a VERY strawberry blonde. So I have to wait a few days and I'm going to put in a medium ash blonde to try and balance out the gold.
Wish me luck! I'll post pics if anyone cares. lol |

So did you do it yourself? Don't forget you can put in a toner if it's too orange. And yes, I for one, would love to see the results. Good luck! |

I need a toner! lol where can I get that Keliu? I like the level of blonde, but I need to get rid of the orangish tint. |

A toner should be readily available in any hair product/beauty supply shop. They are usually purple in colour. I use Schwarzkopf Hair Repair Blonde Toner - it's for blonde, lightened or highlighted hair. It is left on for 1-5 minutes, but if necessary, can be left on longer. I think Clairol also make a good one but there are lots to choose from. If your hair is very bleached and porous, be careful, because you can end up with purple ends! |

You just need the toner. It's ready to use and very simple. Just shampoo then put the toner on, wait the recommended time, then rinse off. |

Okay there you have it although I'm not done. I did put a blue based toner on it today. I bought it from Sally's Beauty supply so I had to buy developer because it was not already mixed like the ones they sell in some drug stores. (She explained it to me) Anyway it's still too strawberry for my taste but I'm happy with the level of blonde. So I'm going to start using Clairol Shimmer Lights to keep the brassiness down, and in a few weeks I'm going to add some color breaks because it's too uniform.
So, that's it! My hair doesn't feel damaged, and I spent a total of $40. (I haven't bought the shimmer lights yet so that's not included ) |

Thank you Nimue! I get bored with a color, lol. Too often to have to pay $100 for someone else to do it too! |

Well, I think you've done a great job, well done. But I would agree that the colour is too uniform so I'll be interested to know how you go with putting some streaks in.
For maintenance you could try Redken Blonde Glam Pure Pearl - it's a colour-activating treatment for ultra pale blonde highlights. |

Thank you Keliu! I might try that. I'll post an updated pic when I do the highlights. I might paint them on, I hate caps. |
