I have had deep blackheads on the sides of my nose, on my cheeks, since I can remember..I have bought every blackhead cleanser on the market. I even went to a spa and got a microdermabrasion facial, and they were still there afterwards. I have them lightly on my chin as well, and if anyone has any DIY home remedies I WOULD LOVE TO TRY THEM! I have pretty dry skin, it's never really been oily, maaaybe in junior high a little. I'm 21 now, and with dry skin, does anyone have suggestions? Please help![u]

Thanks, AmberLeigh

For more then 15 years of my experience as an Acne specialist I will assure you that the only option to get rid of blackheads is to have a facial with very good, properly done extractions. There is no cream or lotion or any other product that can do better then manual "pushing" sebum out of the blocked pores.
When done by experience esthetician - your pores will be empty and no more blackheads. To prevent pores from blocking again be sure that you moisturize your skin in daily basis with right cream for your skin and do not forget that regular facials are necessary to keep your skin clean, fresh in good shape.
Good luck

Tazorac (Vit A)helps a lot. Your skin will get real flakey. Only use a little bit. You will need a script from a doctor. Also, take Omega 3 or eat fish. This will help balance the good oil in your skin.

How about something like a BHA peel? Makeup Artists Choice sell a 15% BHA peel. I have not used it and would think you need to do atleast few or more to work the blackheads out. And you would also want to be careful and do a test patch first of course. I would probably try to treat the blackhead only. BHA peels do sting quite a bit.

Other then that the only other thing I can think of are having professional extractions done.

Any peels will dry the skin and make it flaky - it is design to remove dead cells and smooth out the outer layer of the skin. It will not remove blackheads as those are blocked pores. They need to be extracted. You might be able to remove the black tip of the blocked pore as it is sebum that oxygenated and became black, but pore will still be full and it will become black again very soon. be sure to use good moisturized

tweezerman makes a little stick for extractions... I use that almost daily. After cleansing and whatever mask I use... It's magic!

Although my DH runs when I say... "wait a minute... I need the stick for this one..." LOL!

Will keeping it moisturized prevent the pore from clogging up again? Any particular moisturizer? I have blackheads too which return after extraction so I'm wondering how to keep them away. I do use a moisturizer but it doesn't seem to make a difference as far as preventing more blackheads.

Thanks!

I have a bad problem with deep blackheads. The only thing I've found that has helped in clearing them is using an anti-bacterial cleanser like Neostrata anti-bacterial soap free cleanser and also using benzoyl peroxide like one from proactive or the one in the acne Loreal Kit. I also read ultra-sonic skin scrubbers help with blackheads and am probably going to invest in one in a few weeks. As for BHAs, they have never helped with my blackheads.

In regards to moisturizers, my esthetician (she is the one who put me on the above regimine)explained that as long as I wash my face twice a day with the anti-bacterial cleanser,it will be okay to use an oil-free moisturizer.

Another thing I do once a week is use the NCN pumpkin peel and sit under a facial steamer while for about 15 mins. My skin is really loving this weekly treatment.

that's unfortunate that the only way to get rid of blackheads is facial+extraction. I have a few on myself. I guess I'll do so before graduation along with filing my two pointy teeths

haaahhaaa! I'm really getting a weird image of you doing extractions with your teeth!!! lol

Is it dangerous doing extractions on myself? Will I be in danger of causing broken capillaries? Is there a tutorial on this anywhere? TIA

hi! just wanted to post and say maybe you should try the obagi Nu-derm system. I have been on it (w/ retin-a) for about 2 weeks now and literally, my horrible deep blackheads that have plagued me my whole life - are GONE! its a pretty intense system but definitely works.

I agree with EZUltrasound that you may want to try the Nuderm system as it really worked for me. I also use the Pretika Sonic Dermabrasion everyday and that really prevents new ones from forming.

Keep your skin care simple, clean well but gently, eat well. Try to find out what is causing the acne - have you seen a dermatologist?

Since your skin is dry, it would seem that your pores are struggling to moisture your skin but are clogged with debris. Help your skin out by choosing a moisturizer that absorbs well - one that is similar to human lipids - you might look into emu oil or jojoba.

My biggest recommendation is regarding cleansing. Look into the Clarisonic skin brush or the Pretika "knockoff". You can read more info, reviews, etc. by doing a search on EDS. If you can't afford either of them, at least get a microfiber/"microdermabrasion" cloth or sponge - you can get those cheaply on Ebay. Also more info if you do an EDS forum search.

My nose pores tend to clog and the Clarisonic has made a big difference for me. I also do use a metal extractor to help keep my pores clear. The best one I've gotten, I got from Sephora (their brand) - it has a bigger loop than the Tweezerman's I have and I use the flat edge to press against the pore and the excess sebum comes out:

Sephora's long-handled Stainless Steel Double Loop Extractor $16 www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P0417&categoryId=B70
You can read some reviews on the site - re: technique, etc.

Best wishes!

You can get the Oabgi systems online - essentialdayspa.com has really good prices on the complete kits. The retin-a you would need a prescription from your derm. for. Or you can purchase generic retin-a online at alldaychemist.com. This is an overseas generic drug company and many EDSers have used this company and their retin-a (myself included) with great success. Start w/ .025 or .05% retin-a though first, if you have never used it before!

Many thanks EZultrasound. I have the differin cream that I think is the same as retinol which I received from a dermatologist, but have not been using it as it seemed to make my skin more greasy, I will have a look at the obagi system though thanks.

besides at home AHA/BHA treatments

have you considered

- facial exercises with professional extractions
- seeing a dermatologist
- clarisonic brush (it got rid of most of my blackheads, well at least prevented them from forming)

?

I've read about microdermabraison as well...wondering if this works as well (at clinics)

Hi Fawnie -

No, it's not dangerous to do extractions on yourself. However, you definitely want to make sure that the skin is prepped - and the comedones (blackheads) are softened prior to attempting extractions. (Gentle steaming works - or you can always plan to do it after a nice long shower...)

From my internet searches:

"You may cover your nails with cotton if they are too long. You will use only your fingers or a special extraction tool to press around and get the impurities out. Most experts do not recommend touching pimples because you may spread the infection or make it bigger and leave scars later on. Be gentle. Apply toner on your skin using cotton or a sprayer."

"Facial extraction means removing accumulated sebum from pores in the face. Sebum is what clogs the pores and causes blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. Extraction is done manually, very carefully and with a clean cloth against clean skin, after the pores are first opened with steam. There is some slight pressure involved, and it's not the most fun experience, but it is necessary — and best done by a skin professional. On the other hand, facial extraction is easier on the client and much less unpleasant than leg or bikini waxing."

"If you have ever had a facial, you've likely heard the term extraction. It might sound painful, but if done correctly, this simple and painless procedure removes pore-clogging sebum. It is done manually by a trained facialist, dermatologist, or esthetician using a metal tool or by applying gentle pressure, after they have cleansed your skin and opened your pores with heat or steam. Keep in mind that pores are sensitive, and if your skin isn't prepared or the extraction is done incorrectly, it can cause broken capillaries and irritate the skin which may result in more breakouts. When in doubt, it is best to avoid the at-home extraction tools, and leave the squeezing to a professional."

Hope this helps!

Extraction and exfoliation are the key. As well as figuring out what is causing the black heads in the first place - is it a product, your diet, etc. - this usually requires some detective work.

Try not to be too rough with your skin. Gently cleanse with a product that does NOT strip your skin of it's natural oils. Also pick a moisturizer that absorbs well into the skin - ones like emu oil or jojoba are similar to the lipid profile of human oil.

To clean your skin, I highly recommend using a sonic skin brush (like Clarisonic or the Pretika). If you can't afford either of those, definitely at the least get a microfiber cloth or sponge. I like the "microdermabrasion" sponges sold on Ebay by Stan or his wife YummySweetz:
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZthankyoustan
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZyummysweetz

Also, do NOT expect a problem that has build up over time to be remedied in a day. Be persistent with extracting and exfoliation (the sonic skin brushes do a nice job of gentle but powerful cleansing & exfoliation) and you should turn the corner!
