One way I stay on top of the latest in cosmetic science is by reading everything I can get my hands on. This summer I purchased a new book and have just finished reading it.
The New Science of Perfect Skin is written by Daniel Yarosh, PhD. His book explains how to understand skin care myths and miracles for radiant skin at any age. It tackles such topics as decoding product labels, spotting marketing hype, spending less for bigger results, and knowing what really works for your skin.
A review of the book started out by saying something that really hits the nail on the head in the cosmetic world:
"One of the basic problems that we face in the cosmetic industry is that we have to constantly defend ourselves against those that write strange and scary stories about our products on the internet. The things being written about our products are quite extraordinary and seemingly true also because, after all, all that is written on the internet is true [sic]."
The reason I found this book so technically believable is because the author is a PhD, widely recognized as a pioneer on the science of DNA repair and the development of cosmeceuticals. He has held research appointments at the National Cancer Institute and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Several of the new and novel cosmetic ingredients that Dr. Yarosh invented are currently being used by Coty, Estee Lauder, and Shiseido. He is an author of over 100 scientific papers on the science of skin and DNA repair.
The book is divided into four parts:
I. The Basics
II. Packaging and Ingredients
III. Cosmetic Products
IV. Regimens and Recommendations
I would highly recommend going out and getting a copy of this book. It was written by a "skin chemist" which cannot be said for the book "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me" by Paula Begoun which is chock full of misinformation.
It is published by Broadway Books, New York, NY and can generally be picked up for about $19.50 US, depending on where you find it for sale.

It was a great read, though I felt it was a actually a bit behind the times on some areas, even when it was first published in May.
It was also a less than subtle push for the Remergent product line. |

Yes that is true bethany, good point. But that's because he developed most of the raw materials for that line as owner and operator of AGI Dermatics. In my opinion, I'll concede this to him since I'm sure he is passionate about what he created and believes in his products and probably has scientific testing to back up his claims. But, he also gives fair play to many others in his book as well, so I wouldn't call it biased really. |

If you revisit his recommendations, you will see that the majority of the recommendations use his technologies (except for cleansers, etc.)
He definitely does have scientific testing to back up his products...much of it is located on his website and can also be found on Pubmed. And yes, I have read it all, lol.
Yarosh is definitely top notch, and I trust what he produces fully. I think the Remergent products are some of the best out there with the advanced delivery systems and unique ingredients.
I have many of the Remergent products, and also use his DNA technology via the ZO Skin Health Daily Power Defense. |
