I need to take Doxyhexal for the next 6 weeks as an anti-malaria measure while I travel, which is starting to really worry me. I've heard a couple of rather bad stories from friends (though obviously not as bad as my other friend's experience of almost dying from malignant malaria and being incapacitated for almost a year). One ended up with a hole in her esophagus, while the other got a really bad rash after sun exposure and says that her skin has not been the same since.
I just did a bit of reading up about it and notice that it is prescribed for acne. I am hoping that this means it's a fairly common prescription and what my friends have described is something that is very unlikely...
Does anyone have any knowledge/experience with it? TIA! |

While I think the other preventative measures such as nets and clothing are more important than the meds, I travel with a treatment dose of Malarone, and put my daughter on Malarone junior when in affected areas. I have heard very mixed reports from other travelers re: doxy, but most seem to tolerate it just fine. The biggest factors are where and when you travel, IMO. |

It does make your skin more sensitive to the sun so you do need to make sure you use sun protection.
It is one of the commonly prescribed oral antibiotics for acne and also for lyme disease.
Will you start taking this before your trip? I would definitely start before you leave just in case you have a reaction to it. And don't forget to take acidophilus while you are on it to prevent an imbalance of bad vs good bacterial. |

My husband and I both took this drug when we travelled to Vietnam - we had no problem with it at all. I believe that it is very commonly prescribed and if you have any worries about it you should speak to your doctor who will re-assure you. Just take it, relax, and enjoy your trip. |

Mabsy - I have been Doryx (time-released Doxycycline) for hormonal acne and it cleared my face in record time! Of course, that's not what you are asking but I am so delighted that I just had to share!!
Now on to the not-so-great news...the stuff really makes feel nauseated alot (though not to the point of actually getting sick, if that is any consolation!!). I take it with food and have learned NOT to lay down for an hour or so after I take it or else I get the burning along with the queasiness. I wonder if your friend took it right before laying down. My directions did not say not to - I read that online somewhere. Anyway, though the nausea isn't fun, I obviously feel that it is worth the clear skin that I am finally experiencing after 5 years. I take the Doryx for 2 more months and then get weaned off of it and see what happens.
Be sure to take it with food and lots of water too. I haven't noticed any particular sensitivity to sunlight though I have gotten quite regular with my NIA 24 sunscreen usage.
HTH! |

Thank you everyone, I feel better taking this knowing that you mostly had no problems with it. I started taking it 2 days before I left home so it should be fine now. And, brenpatsa, I'm very happy to hear that it helped you with your skin. I was told that it should be taken with lots of water and that you shouldn't lie down for a while. My friend didn't know about the 'lots of water' part, so I think that is what happened there.
Of course, as I sit here in my hotel at 1:30am looking at the rash on my face that is getting bigger and bigger, I can't help but wonder if these meds had something to do with it. It's an overcast day today and I was using 50++ sunblock, so at least I don't think it's a reaction to the sun. I'm going to sleep and keeping my fingers crossed that I wake up tomorrow with no rash... |

I've been taking it since mid-October for pre and post operative breakout prevention following my upper and lower bleph and laser. It does make me very nauseas so I have to take it with food or I will throw up. Also lots of water does help but it makes the nausea worse if I haven't eaten. It can cause a rash if you go in the sun without VERY strong sunscreen with it. That just happened to me while in Vegas as I forgot my strong sunblock and the doc called me up a RX for a topical cortisone cream to help. Good luck and crackers do help. |

Thank you, it's cleared up (thank goodness!). When you're in a different country for which your own government makes you get a stack of vaccinations it's always a bit unnerving to get a rash. In hindsight, perhaps that was due to sun exposure and the malaria tablets. I am using MMU and also a 50++ sunblock but maybe I didn't really often enough. Ironically, while my skin is dry as never before (I think due to the climate though) all sorts of existing bumps are clearing up. I have a feeling that this might be the positive effects of the tablets. I consider myself very lucky, after hearing your stories, because the tablets don't make me feel sick.
Thank you all for the advice! |
