I couldn't find a thread here about today's Oprah show. I was intrigued to learn that Japanese women drink their collagen. I would have thought digestive juices would make it worthless???? but I was just making up my mind to start drinking it. LOL.

Then I saw the mother (age 70) and daughter (20-30) who said it kept them looking young. I thought the mother looked every bit her age. Her jowls sagged, her nasal-labial folds were horrendous . . . it looked to me like her collagen cocktails didn't do much of anything.

Anybody else have any ideas on the subject?

Collagen is only type of protein. Our body cannot absorb it to use. I think it's quite useless to drink it.

I think its useless to drink it too. Asian women have beautiful skin to begin with. Its all in the genes.

I know they do - like china dolls. I wonder why they don't have high instances of skin cancer because of the bleaching they do.

I also saw this Oprah show. I don't believe drinking collagen will help your skin.

I too am sceptical about whether our body can absorb collagen and how it can get into the tissues where it's needed. However, I live in an Asian country where a LOT of women take collagen supplements. The one that's linked above marketed by the Japanese Fancl Corporation is very very popular and many have reported good short term effects from it. For example, glowing skin, wrinkles diminished, acne reduced, etc. So whatever the mechanism by which it gets into the body, it does work. These supplements are expensive and people wouldn't be continuing to buy them if they had no effects. However, as emphasized, the effects are short term. As soon as they stop consuming the supplement, the skin reverts to its former state.

I myself think that it's more sensible to try and stimulate your own body's collagen production. For example, by Biosil or MSM, rather than consume collagen. But Biosil and MSM aren't readily available here, so nobody has been able to make a good comparison of these.

I really don't believe this could work. Most things you eat don't have an immediate effect on the skin. You can't eat vitamin C and get the same effects as topical application. Sounds strange to me.

Yeah, you're right. Sounds very strange to me too. But honestly so many people rave about its effects and brides-to-be would buy this stuff and drink every day before their wedding to ensure radiant skin. As I mentioned, it really is quite expensive (each bottle costs about USD5 for one daily dose), so I don't think people would be so crazy to purchase it if it doesn't work. It also doesn't make sense to me from the human physiology view point, but sales of this stuff are very good in Asia and Japan.

I also wonder as well as it seems like taking the collagen supplement is part of your daily skincare routine for Asian ladies.. so in order to maintain beautiful skin, you need to use the right skincare and taking collagen supplement.
FYI, not only it comes in a costly tiny bottle... those Japanese snacks including jelly, marshmallow etc also claimed to have some collagen on the packaging.

I've also seen yoghurt in the supermarket proudly claiming on the label that it contains collagen Laughing

Doctor also said that drinking those so called collagen is useless. They are just protein after digestion!

Ya, we can't absorb collagen directly.

Actually, I tried the collagen drinks from Fancl sometimes ago. taste okay but not much changes to my skin.

Animal's skin is full of collagen, if you dare to eat, asians love pig skin and chicken feet and that's why they have better skin. It may sound awful to eat those but they are food. And eating fish helps too (Omega 3).

i agree with the above posts; i would imagine that it does nothing.
I travel to Asia a lot for work, and i always seem to end up buying the "collagen candies" from the 100 yen (dollar stores) in Japan. They have a liquid inside that is supposed to be the collagen. There are all sorts of chewy collagen candies too.

I think the idea of ingesting collagen makes us think we are doing our skin a favour! Oh well, it gives me something to nibble on during the plane ride home. It's kind of fun to "think" it works!

I agree. It was reported that collagen will do harm to our breasts.

I am afraid that drinking collagen will cause some changes to our bodies, such as hyperplasia. So I won't have a try.

Totally agree with you. It is useless to drink it. That's not how collagen in your skin gets there.

Secondly, I don't believe that collagen of any form can enter your skin cells from the outer layers of your skin. In other words, all the skin care products that claim to have collagen in them that will penetrate into your deep skin layer...are just a waste of time.

On the other hand, collagen spread on your skin surface does have a nice smoothing effect on the outer layer.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think there is any scientific-based information stating that eating or drinking collagen drinks or food with collagen will have any beneficial effects on your skin. (information from brand websites is not considered scientific or reliable).

I live in an Asian country too and the girls love to take collagen supplements from Fancl and Meiji. One is fish collagen and the other boar collagen.

I've taken the Meiji collagen for 1 month and did not notice any significant difference. However, I have LOTS of gfs who swear by them. It gives them better skin and a glow that even their SO would notice.

Like m1rox mentioned, the products are not cheap and for people to continuously take them mean they are seeing some effects.
