My Father died a couple of months ago and I had his mail forwarded to my house. He never owned a computer and had shopped by catalog. Well, he is on everyone's mailing list. The USPS told me that they only forward first class mail and the catalogs would not be forwarded. Some how the catalog companies have his name listed under my address and I am getting 3-4 catalogs a day. Does anyone know how I can stop this? |

cookie, my sympathies to you about your dad....
Trywww.catalogchoice.org....you can choose what catalogs you want d/c'd from there. It does take about 8 wks, but you should notice a big difference!! The postman/lady will thank you for it! |

Cookie, I am very sorry to hear about your dad. I hope you got through Thanksgiving ok.
Here is one of the best writeups on how to get off various kinds of communications lists.
http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs4-junk.htm#getofflist
As far as how they got your address...when you submitted the mail forwarding slip to the USPS for your dad, that data is made available to direct marketers through "National Change of Address" services (aka NCOA). They then apply that new address to their databases, and start shipping to your address.
The good news is that we are at the peak of catalog season...once we get through the holidays, you will see the volume dimish greatly. Retailers are trying very hard to convert communications to email and drive people to websites, as opposed to printing catalogs which cost much more to produce and mail. (especially in this economy)
And if you do NOT buy, you will most likely be dropped from the distribution lists within receiving 3-5 catalogs...until the next holiday season, that is.
I hope that helps a bit. |

Fawnie and Bethany thank you so much. I signed up and hopefully these catalogs will stop. It is horrible the amount of paper that is wasted through these catalogs. My Dad bought from a couple and ended up on everyone's list. |
