Hi all,
I've been using retinol (Skinceuticals .5) on my face for several months now. I've noticed that I have these brown blotches on my chin near the left side my mouth for the past two weeks that aren't going away. At first I thought they'd peel off like the right side of my mouth did once before when I was using the heavier Retin-A. But these aren't peeling off. They're just there, and I could swear they're expanding.
Am I having some sort of reaction after 7-8 months of use? I wear sunscreen religiously and always stay out of the sun. I don't have any other dark blotches, just these on my chin. I won't be able to see a dermatologist for another month or so, so any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
TIA |

Forgot to mention that I use Skinceuticals Phloretin CF every other day in the morning as well. |

I wish someone would have the answer because I have exactly the same problem.
I used Obagi Retrenoin .05% mixing with Obagi blender (spuposed to get rid of the brown spots). The spots on the cheeks faded away, but those on my chin seem to get darker.
I would greatly appreciate any light shed to this matter.
Thank you |

Which sunblocks are you ladies using? It is very important to apply high protection stable sunblock and to ensure it stays on. The areas around the mouth and the chin are more susceptible to sunblock rubbing off because we wipe around there after we eat or drink. The protection from a physical sunblock would be more vulnerable in such a situation as the protection is dependent on there being a layer of the sunblock on the skin surface. A chemical sunblock would be less susceptible to reduced protection after rubbing as some of it gets absorbed into the skin. |

Hello,
I would also like to know what it is. I used Obagi and retin a and the area above my upperlip also got darker!! And everyone says it can't be Obagi removes the dark spots.
Oh I wish it would really remove all these spots and not make them darker. I so use sunscreen also and stay out of the sun. |

Hi there everyone, I don't use Retin A but I do notice that my chin area or the area around my mouth is noticeably darker than the rest of my face. I have it since I was in high school too. I won't say that I stay under the sun a lot...maybe incidental exposure.
I'm wondering is it cuz the skin around our mouth is much thinner? as we move it a lot or rub it a lot due to eating, drinking, chewing, or talking? I know I'm talking non sense here but really do hope someone can jump in to help! |

Hi Amira!
I have the same problem with a brown spot showing up under my left eye where my cheek starts (back in September 2006). At that time I had just started using a Retinol (Ystheal) and was alternating every other night with SkinCeuticals Intense Line Defense (a 12% AHA serum). I still have the brown spot and will be making an appointment with a dermatologist to see if I can have it removed by laser. I assume it is sun damage that has risen to the top layer of skin (from using the exfoliating products). Here is the link to the old thread on brown spots:

It does sound a lot like hyperpigmentation from the heightened sun sensitivity caused by the retinoid. What sunscreen specifically were you using? Did it have high UVA as well as UVB protection? Were you using enough of it?--the 1/4 tsp baseline is a lot more than many folks use.
Not all sunscreens are created equal. |

Flitcraft beat me to it, but I was literally going to ask exactly the same thing. Also how often are you applying sunscreen, UVB protection isn't one that the majority out there cover (they all seem to focus on UVA) and sunscreens, if your touching your face, or active do not last all day. UVA and UVB can get you even when its not sunny - they penetrate the clouds... so many people when they start Retin A think they only need to cover up when its sunny - the opposite is true... they need protection all the time. |

Hi everyone, thanks so much for the replies.
I use Devita Solar Protection 30 and I use a lot of it. It's 14% micronized zinc oxide. I don't see much sun at all during the day except for my 5 minute morning walk to the office. I have no windows in the office, don't leave the building for lunch, and by the time I get out it's dark outside. I try to be very diligent about not only protection but staying -out- of the sun. The only UV I'd be getting would be from my computer screen.
On the weekends I up my sunblock if I'm going out by using MAC Prep + Prime spf 50. Also use vit. C every other day.
I've actually cut back on the retin-A because I was afraid more spots would show up. The spots I got have faded considerably since. I'm still using retin-A once or twice a week (and Skinceutical retinol .5 once or twice on different nights as well). I'm also adding a bit of jojoba oil after 30 mins from applying retin-A. I think dryness contributed to the spots maybe? Because the areas where the spots were are also the areas where I've peeled the most. Anyway not all have fully faded but they're less noticeable than before.
I have a super oily t-zone so it's possible that physical sunblock is rubbing off, but I do reapply PTR spf 30 powder if I go outdoors during the week, which doesn't happen often at all. |

I use Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 30.
Do you think it's good enough? I don't go out in the sun that much either - less than 5 minutes from the car to the building twice a day. |
