Hello, I haven't posted before, but have really enjoyed the abundance of information in this forum given by people who care about the longterm health of their skin. I hope to look as young as possible for as long as possible!
I am 34 years old with combination skin, some very small beginnings of crow's feet and forehead wrinkling, but not much. My pores are a bit bigger than I like, but I work hard to keep them unclogged. I have been prone to breakouts even into my thirties, however use of OTC, low percentage topical retinol products and some SA products has all but eliminated my breakouts. I have some dark age spots I'd like to work on. I carry stress in my face and argireline seems to help a great deal- I only use it once or twice a week at most.
I love EDS and have purchased and tried Skinceuticals retinol 1.0, PSF brow tox and cellex c serum. I liked the first two a lot, not sure about the c serum (hard to guage) and also bought celex c under eye toner which I hated (burning and drying).
Currently I use a L'oreal hyaluronic acid product and a neutrogena retinol serum. I'm finally getting to my PSF cranberry eye gel, don't know why i waited, i like it! very soothing. Sorry for so much background, leading to my questions... I just ordered from Personal Formulator some ingredients: hyaluronic acid, argireline/matrixyl 3000, lactic acid (for peels/toners) and l-ascorbic acid. I should probably find some retinol product as well??? but I don't want to overdo...
I want to move forward cautiously and use the right dilutions, etc... I'm also looking for an alternative to Purpose bar soap as a facial cleanser- I'm looking for something gentle and effective, no residue, any suggestions? Also does anyone have any recommendations for actives or antioxidants in a general all-over body cream? Any precautions or tips regarding a change in routine? Please share your advice and experiences!
TIA,
Heather |

Thank you, that looks lovely! I'm looking for something like that to cleanse that isn't heavy on the actives, but is beneficial.
Also, really interested in an allover body product that helps with collagen and stetchmarks. I looked at a lot of the dermaroller posts and would love some input on that as far as streatch marks and scars, but I don't think I'm ready to go there, so any other product info would be great. |

Some random answers to your questions:
Purpose bar soap alternative: First, I am wondering why you want an alternative? You want something better or cheaper or what? Of course, you probably already know that Purpose makes a face wash liquid. I really like it. Never used their bar soap, so I can not offer any comparisons. Cetaphil is also an obvious face wash liquid choice.
Concentrations for your DIY mixtures: I have never done any DIY, but have lots of experience using products with various concentrations, so here is my two cents...
Matrixyl 3000: For the record, I have read that this is a cheaper but less effective version of regular Matrixyl.
In terms of regular Matrixyl, in my experience, ANY concentration is better than nothing, e.g. even 1 or 2% helps. The maximum dose in terms of "value for money" is 10% based on my experience. Using 10% matrixyl, I got very good results with one serum for a year or two. Then, being curious, I switched to another brand that offered 20% Matrixyl, but I was surprised to find that the result for me was the same. Good, yes, but not worth the extra cost of additional matrixyl. So I would suggest 8-10% concentration of matrixyl for good results and good value.
Argireline: Same experience as above but different numbers. I tried small amounts with ok results. I then tried other products with higher and higher concentrations. In the end, I felt that 12-15% is probably the best range in terms of results and cost. Products with more than 15% argireline seem to be more expensive (logically), but the additional benefit seems minimal.
Hyluronic Acid: Again, similar results with different numbers. ANY amount of HA added to a product improves it in my view. If you are looking to use an HA serum, then 20% concentration is a good figure. I once tried a 45% HA serum, but it was very thick and gooey, I suppose due to the higher concentration of HA.
Since you are doing DIY mixes, you could take a look at my current favorite brand, Serum Logic (www.serum-logic.com ). they very nicely print the formulas for each of their products on their website including the concentrations of key ingredients. I guess they might be mad at me for suggesting you "borrow" their formulas...Hope they can not figure out my real name from my screen name here. Ha ha! |

Thanks zindrella. I was wondering about matrixyl vs. matrixyl 3000 and have read conflicting reports. I guess I'll have to try both, since I have the 3000 on it's way. Does anyone know if the concentration should be different?
As far as the Purpose, I do like it, so if I don't find anything better I'll return to it, and I actually think a slightly exfoliating cloth with the liquid might be better than the bar. Currently I do feel there is a bit of residue left and so there's room for improvement. I'm really looking for a nice, balanced, naked clean skin feeling. Thank you for the link and the percentage recommendations and experiences, I really need those. |

If your looking for a great cleanser I recommend Cera Ve's hydrating cleanser. This cleaner does not contain sulfates which can strip skin of it's natural lipid barrier. |

From my very unscientific viewpoint, they seem to be used in similar percentages in various products around the market. So, in effect, they appear to be interchangeable in terms of concentration. |

Thanks again, zindrella. Sounds logical.
I am looking at the CeraVe. Surprised I don't recognize it. It is a good price and looks interesting. Definitely somthing I would try. |
