Do any of you highlight your own hair at home?
I am thinking of trying this, trying to cut back on expenses these days, etc.
If so, any good tips? tools? brands? techniques?
I am thinking I need to thicken the color with some color thickener from Sallys so that it doesn't drip so much on me.........
thanks! |

I color my own hair because the salons (including high end ones) always mess it up. If you have anyone who can buy the good coloring products from Sally for you, the ones that don't have public pricing, that would be great. It's next to impossible to get good results with the stuff they sell us at Wal-Mart, etc. I get mine from my mother-in-law who's a hair dresser. |

I put blond highlights in my hair and use a mixture of 1 scoop powder bleach and 2 scoops of 30 vol creme developer. Due to some zealous over application in the past, I now use a rubber streaking cap. I just pull a few strands of hair through the holes in the cap then paint the mixture on. I then cover the whole cap in aluminium foil to replicate getting foils at the hairdressers. I leave it on for 30 minutes then throw the foil away and wash the cap and hair in the shower.
You can then apply a toner afterwards if you like but I usually wait until the next day to see if I need to or not.
I've tried most of the home hair colouring products but I find the bleach and this application method the most successful. |

The "foil technique" works the best. Put thin strands on foil, then bleach. 30 minutes go by, then check the first one you've done. Then afterwards apply an all over colour and the bleached areas will get highlighted. |
