Have just watched the most fantastic programme on TV - "Prof. Regan's Beauty Parlour". It was a British documentary about beauty products investigated by a medical professor (Regan). She looked at the various aspects of skin and hair care - sun protection, protection against free radicals, preventing wrinkles and removing wrinkles.
Each product was given to various specialists and scientific labs to test. She pointed out that any product that had a PL No. (Product Licence Number) had gone through rigorous clinical testing so, therefore, any claims that it made had been verified. Cosmetics, on the other hand, were not subject to any kind of licenced testing and their claims could be disputed. To be very brief, the results were as follows:
. Sunscreens are clinically tested and are a must.
. a conditioner specifically for colour treated hair was shown to perform better (on colour treated hair) than an ordinary conditioner.
. out of a number of anti-oxidant creams tested (Zelens C60 and Prevage down to Nivea Vitamin C) all were shown to have anti-oxidant properties (fight free-radicals) - but the one that was the most effective was the cheapest - Nivea Vitamin C.
. the only product shown to successfully remove wrinkles was Tretinoin. This was shown to actually promote collagen growth in the deeper layers of the skin.
Prof. Regan stated that many of the cosmetic companies were reluctant to include ingredients in their products that actually effect the deeper layers of the skin because they would then not be classified as "cosmetic" but as a medicine and would therefore have to undergo rigorous testing.
This programme was so interesting - if you come across it on your TV - be sure to watch it. |

This is very interesting. I didn't even know Nivea made a vitamin C product. Do you happen to know all the anti-oxidant creams it was tested against? |

No sorry, the actual creams they tested weren't really promoted (there were about 5) and the viewer was pretty much left to try and spot them. There was a Clarins one that didn't rate too well I think. I could see the Prevage one quite clearly, the Zelens C60 I'm not familiar with. The Nivea Vitamin C cream was in a white tube. |

| Thanks, Keliu. I was curious if they tested a skinceuticals against the Nivea! I'll have to see if I can find this show on any channels here! |

Here's some more blurb about the programme:

Edited to Add: One woman posted on the above site that she paused the video and that the product was Nivea Visage Age Reversal - With Pure Vitamin C |

I wonder if Tazarotene and Adapalene works as well, or if it's specifically Retin-A...?
Thanks Keliu! I will definitely keep an eye out for this program! |

I've looked high and low for the ingredient list, but all I could find was this partial info. I don't even see it carried in the US drugstores, (unless I'm totally dense and missed it .. )
Age Reversal
NIVEA Visage AGE REVERSAL is proven to make skin's structure 10 years younger. It activates the skin's own renewal process deep down for noticeably smoother, firmer and radiantly fresh skin Reason Why? An intense rejuvenating moisturising cream with 3% pure Vitamin C and UVA/UVB protection in combination with Vitamin E.
Just wondering how they qualify this as "intense" with only 3% C in there? |

You wouldn't believe the way they test the ability of an anti-oxidant cream to kill free-radicals. There is a lab in England that grows these large worm-like creatures (forget the name) that give off phosphorus that is related to free-radicals, hence they glow. The anti-oxidant cream is spread on the poor wormy thing and if it doesn't glow, then they know that the free-radicals have been killed! Sorry for my explanation of this, but it's all terribly scientific really and they send these worms to labs all over the world for this kind of testing. The worms cost 375 pounds each.
It was the Nivea cream that killed off the most free-radicals (hence no glowing) but they didn't elaborate on what particular ingredient was doing that - so I don't know whether the Vitamin C was responsible. |

I could not find ingredients for this Nivea product, either. But, I read this on one site regarding the C in the Visage.
"The formulation is based on Vitamin C in its purest form, which is known as sodium ascorbate, at pH 7.2-7.4. At this pH level it is the most natural yet stable skin compatible way to formulate pure vitamin C. Nivea's research has proved that vitamin C can activate the skin's own restructuring process by stimulating collagen synthesis inside papillae cells, and promote the skin's natural repair and renewal process." |

They have it at www.drugstore.com but not sure if they have the product you are talking about. (I posted this but I don't have a clue what topic I put it under.) |

If you look at the above website, the article about the programme was written in 2007, that's two years ago.
I'm thinking that Nivea has probably updated their products since then - the current products are probably the Nivea Visage Q10. This would explain why we can't find the Nivea Visage Age Reversal. Interestingly I do know that the Visage Q10 cream gets consistently good reviews in allot of beauty magazines. |

Sorry, Keliu, but your description of the "poor wormy things" made me laugh! Perhaps the Nivea cream only works on the worms...
Sad to think we are trusting the outcome of our quest for healthy skin on.......poor wormy glowy things. |

What do you mean "poor wormy glowy things" - at least they're now wrinkle free! |
