Well, I've seen topics asking about pet peeves and guilty pleasures, where you've lived and where you work...now I think it would be interesting to hear about each other's biggest fears, be they serious or silly!!
Today is election day in the U.S. where all citizens over age 18 have the opportunity to go out and cast a vote to help determine who will be leading our country for the next four years. I'm not going to go into a big political spiel, other than to say: George W. Bush is a buffoon.
Trust me on this, as he was the Governor of Texas for six years before those fools in Florida elected him president (of course I'm referring to the ballot counting fiasco during the 2000 U.S. prez election, when it took nearly two months to figure out exactly who we elected). I wonder where the U.S. would be today if Al Gore had won the election instead...would the economy be in the toilet? Would the rest of the world think that all Americans were "cowboys"? I know that we'd have had to attack Afganistan, regardless of whether Bush or Gore had been in the Whitehouse, in response to the Sept 11th attacks, but I don't think that Gore would have sent us in to a quagmire like Iraq. (Obviously I think Saddam Hussein and his sons were evil and needed to be destroyed, but let's be honest about Bush's intentions: he wanted to free the Iraqi oil, not the Iraqi people!!). I could go on and on about this, but the point of me starting this topic was so that we could discuss our biggest fears...although perhaps mine would be that "Dubbaya" gets re-elected!! BTW, have all the Americans seen the election parody from last summer sung to the tune of Arlo Gutherie's "This Land Is Your Land" at www.jibjab.com? I think you ought to pay this website a quick visit before heading out to the poles to do your civic duty!
Now, this is probably going to shock and/or anger a lot of people (since when have I ever let that stop me!), but I have to say that I am not afraid of many things in this world, but the one thing that terrifies me more than anything else on this earth are religious fanatics. I'm not just talking about Islamic terrorists, or the Palestinian vs. Israeli crisis, or even the Indian vs. Pakistani conflict (I know the biggest point of contention is the argument about who owns Kashmir, but isn't there also an element of religious differences, too?). I'm talking about the homegrown religious fanatics that we have here in America. Remember in 1978 or 79, that group of 900 American ex-patriots in Jonestown, Guyana who were members of "the People's Temple" who all drank Grape Koolaid laced with cyanide to commit mass suicide? Then there was the group in southern California in the mid-90s who all castrated themselves before committing suicide because they believed they were going to hitch a ride on a comet (seriously!!) and be delivered to their salvation. And of course there was the infamous "Branch Davidians" in Waco, TX who had a standoff with the U.S. federal agents and then set their home on fire because they'd rather have died than give themselves up...the Davidian members all believed that their leader, David Koresch (sp?) was the next coming of Jesus Christ. And then we have these nutcases who starve their infant children to death because "God spoke to them" and told them that their 18-month-old babies only needed breast milk to survive and thrive -- nevermind the fact that the mothers weren't producing any milk, and when the children started to wane, instead of taking the babies to the doctor or giving them something to eat they PRAYED that God would deliver them and naturally the kids starved to death. HELLO!!!!! God gave us plenty of Gerber's babyfood on the shelves down at the local groceystore -- you were supposed to go shopping for some strained peas and carrots and FEED YOUR BABIES.
I'm sorry. You can see that stuff like that gets me a little worked up. And don't even get me started on the Palestinian suicide bombers or the terrorists who blow up hundreds (or, in the case of Sept 11, thousands) of innocent people in the name of God/Allah. I'm sorry, but God doesn't tell us to hate. That fault is strictly human.
So it's religious extremists who frighten me more than anything in the world. Afterall, when you believe that God (or whatever you call the Supreme Being) is on your side, you are capable of anything.
As I said, this post might turn out to be a little polarizing, but I truly didn't mean to offend anyone...I only wanted to make you stop and think!
Carrie
P.S. This doesn't have anything to do with my fears, but I thought it was so funny that I simply had to share: I called Victoria's Secret this morning to place a catalog order (Boo hoo! In addition to my lush lips, apparently my boobs are also shrinking in my old age, because I noticed my bras are just gaping on me now so I needed to buy some replacements). Imagine my surprise when the representative greeted me with, “Thank you for calling...this is Clitora, how may I help you?” I completely forgot why I was calling! Can you imagine going through life with a name like that? I don’t understand what some parents are thinking when they name their kids. Did they not say the name out loud to test out how it sounded? How it r-o-l-l-e-d off the tongue, so to speak? Can you imagine the grief you’d catch in school, the names they’d call you on the playground? I shudder to think.... |

Yes I agree with a lot of what you say. I am not religious but I do believe that whatever God people believe in, he/she would not want people murdering in his/her name.
Also I would have laughed out loud if someone had introduced themselves as Clitora. Are you sure you didn't accidently ring a ------------ line.

Now that's just downright mean to name your child that. Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where he couldn't remember his girlfriend's name but knew it rhymed with a body part - "is it Mulva?"...Her name turned out to be "Doloris". ROFL.-
Someone told me that her friend who is a teacher had a little boy in class who's name was spelled "Shithead" and pronounced -
"Shith-hade." Sigh. Don't know if that's a true story or not, but I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe Apple is not such a bad name after all, Gwyneth. Nah, YES it is!!!!! lol.
Love the cartoons of JibJab.com. Those guys are hilarious.

Yup. I called it. I knew that the outcome of yesterday's election would be as it was announced this morning. My heart breaks for citizens of the U.S. Having listened to the news this morning, I heard that out of all eligible voters, only 65% cast their ballots yesterday. |

I agreed with your early post CasperMum that perhaps we need to be very careful what we discuss on a skin care forum. However, I must respond to this recent post:
Whether I voted for Bush or Kerry is besides the point. More Americans voted in this election then any other election in US history. President Bush won the electoral AND popular vote.
I believe the majority of Americans will pull together (Democrate and Rebublican) as Americans usually do...Both John Kerry and George Bush were very gracious today. They should set an example for everyone.
Please don't let your heart break for the citizens of the United States of American. The American people spoke yesterday and elected George W. Bush 4 more years.
I personally don't think American Politics should be discussed on this forum. |

Just goes to show that we are all unique and fortunately, have the freedom to voice our preferences with our vote. Since Bush was the first presidential candidate to receive more than a 50% majority since the 1980's evidentally there were quite a lot of people who wanted to see him re-elected.
I personally stayed up till about 2:00 am watching returns and was thrilled with the results.
I also believe in God and pray every day.
Now, having said that, there is no reason why any of that needs to affect how we relate to one another on the simple subject of skincare. Everyone has the right to their own opinion and just because someone has a different opinion from our own, doesn't make them good or bad.... just different.
I'm personally thankful that we all have the right to express our opinions freely without oppression.

Yes perhaps we should be careful as to what we discuss on this forum...after all politics and religion tend to divide people. On the other hand, it's great to see that us skincare girls can have a valid opinion on something else than the latest moisturiser. I live in the UK (but am not British) and I nearly cried when I saw the outcome of yesterday's election. Bush is truly NOT appreciated on this side of the Atlantic and even though the Americans might now suggest that he is THEIR president, his decisions will determine future of many people living far beyond the US border. I did not agree with his politics so far and have no reason to believe that things will change for better. |

I'm sticking to skincare here. I have lots of opinions, political and otherwise, but I've learned not to talk about politics with some of my neighbors as well. W all get along so well, out kids played together all the time and are still friends but we have had some contentious "discussions" and I have felt diffrent "vibes" from them for a while after. I love a good debate but at the right time, right place. And so....about this lip plumper..... |

All opinions respected...so lets make this a bit of light hearted escapism. |

They both are looking a little raggity. Guys go get a facial.
My biggest fear is a selfish one, that my kids will die before me , that scares the sh** out of me, and makes me cry. |

Just want you all to know perhaps I took a post the wrong way last night. I do realize that no matter where you are from you look at the US during these scary times in the world. Therefore what the US does has a large impact on everyone.
Everyone is intitled to their opinion. Perhaps we all need to be sensitive to each other (myself included).

Winnie,
you are sensitive to others feelings. I think the thing is this site grows on you and we have all become friends. We speak honestly to each other which is great most of the time. Sometimes though it is easy to forget that we really dont know each other that well and we all have our tender spots.
I personally only talk about religion, politics and a couple of other things with about 3 people in my life. Because I do not want to fall out with people. I hate conflict. |
