I am going to buy Skinceuticals Retinol 0.5 and intend using it a few times a week on a night. I need to know please do I just put it onto bare skin (all over face and neck) and leave or can I then put an eye cream/night moisturiser over the top??
Please advise as I dont want to get this wrong and have looked on all the threads but noone asks this!! |

Hi,
I use a similar product by Avene and I just cleanse my skin as normal and then apply the cream in a thin layer once my face is dry and just leave it at that. With a prescription retin a you need to let your skin dry for about 20 mins before applying the cream as it can cause irritation on freshly washed skin. I'd try a little of your product on your fore arm or someplace just to make sure you are not sensitive with it and go slow at first just to be safe.
Good Luck! |

Thanks for your reply!
Can I then put moisturisers on after applying the retinol? The one I'm getting si not prescription so was hoping not to have too extreme an affect on my skin with relation to flaking etc...
Is the Avene one good? have you seen good results from it?
Thanks |

Apply your Retinol, and follow 30 minutes later with a very light coating of oil..(avocado, olive, squalane, emu or whatever you have in the house.) The bonus is all the chemicals and preservatives that aren't going into your skin with oil also.)
It will do three things; 1.) help the Retinol to go deeper 2.) nourish the skin and protect the barrier 3.) give the skin all the moisture it needs, which will reduce the flaking.
Just keep in mind though, a little flaking is the visible sign that it's doing it's job, which is skin turnover... Gotta get rid of the dead, to bring on the new..
A microfiber cloth each morning, will get rid of the flakes amazingly! |

I'm SO glad you asked this! I, too, have been wondering about the "order" of things at night.
I've been alternating between Avene Diacneal and Eluage at night, and mix them with a drop of jojoba oil to help disperse them evenly on my face and neck. I must have some tough skin because I haven't had any peeling at all, although these are hardly the big-guns of the retinol world. I do use a microfiber cloth in the morning, as Kassy_A suggests.
Which Avene product do you use, pandora ? I've only been using Avene for a couple of weeks, so don't yet feel comfortable giving a whole-hearted endorsement. However, I do think my skin tone appears more even. I'm not seeing a vast improvement in my hormonal acne, but hope to sometime in the next couple of months.
Good luck with the Skinceuticals, Vee, and let us know how it goes! |

When I was using the skinceuticals 0.5, then 1.0, I alternated days with Paula's Choice BHA 2%.. People tend to say that exfoliation is important with retinols bc the skin is 'renewing' faster..
as for moisturizer, it was soo important.. at the beginning, I overdid it with the retinol and got some red, dry irritated spots and had to use a heavy moisturizer (that eventually broke me out..). I learned quickly that I needed to moisturize in conjunction with the retinol.
I think I might start using it again.. I can't remember why I stopped.. I think something else was making my skin break out and I had to stop using everything... |
