Hi, I'm looking for an OTC progesterone cream to use my face. Interested in an estriol cream, too. I'm really eager to hear what you guys are using. BTW, I am SOOOO post menopause!  |

Hi Mars.
I tried an OTC progesterone cream from Swanson vitamins for 6 mos. and didn't see a result of any kind. That's why I thought a prescription cream/gel might be more effective. I want to try one for the same reason: post-menopausal face 
Anyone? |

Hi ladies. I am post-menopausal and on a quest for nutrients, supplements, hormones etc. that will help restore my energy, skin tone, memory and mood. I found the following site which offers a cream-based progesterone combined with phytoestrogens. I plan on ordering it next week. I'll try to keep you posted with results but, you know, my memory's not so good.

You have to be very careful when buying natural progesterone creams...much of it is hype, and many of them are too weak to do anything.
I can definitely recommend this product...it is made by a gyno who is also a pharmacist and owns his own compounding pharmacy, and he is recognized as a leader in the bio-identical hormone world. This is the same cream that he uses in his practice (I'm a patient), except he customizes the strength per patient when you get the Rx version.

I personally don't like the creams...just too messy and you have to apply 2x a day, and rotate the areas to avoid burning out your estrogen receptors. So I take a Rx gel cap once a day instead called Prometrium.
It has effectively reduced my pre-men hot flashes, but it did make my hair turn very wavy.  |

Mars, It's called Menogest. It's Swanson Vitamin's own brand of progesterone cream.

Has using an oral form of progesterone had an effect on your skin? Or the cream you used to use that you cited?
I don't get hot flashes and the other symptoms of menopause. I'd read on Smartskincare.com that progesterone may help with wrinkles and protect elasticity. Since I've noticed some sagging the last 2 yrs. that's why I would want to try a hormone therapy. Not estrogen though - history of breast cancer in my family. |

I have been on it since I was 36 (am almost 43 now), and my skin was good to begin with so I can't really say. I do know that most people say I do not look my age, so maybe it has been helping?
If you have dry skin, I would definitely recommend Black Current Oil...it was specifically recommended in my Fat Flush Plan book for hydrating skin from the inside out, and I could tell a difference within a week of starting it. Boski on the 302 thread is also a BCO advocate, and I wish I had taken her advice to start it long ago!
BTW, BCO contains GLA which also helps you get rid of stomach fat and may help prevent hairloss as we age. I use the Health From The Sun brand from iherb.com.

I have been using Ovestin cream that I ordered from inhousepharmacy.com for thirty days now, mixing it with my nightly moisturizer over my Finacea gel. I have not noticed any big things happening, wrinkle-wise, but I have had some breakouts that seem hormone induced so I backed off for a week. I'll keep up with the results. The cream was only 13.00 dollars, so it seemed a cheap investment.
I had read many different articles on adding this to the face, but mostly mixed reviews.
Info:
Ovestin cream contains the natural female hormone, oestriol.
This cream contains the hormone Estriol which is a naturally occurring oestrogen. Ovestin is used by post-menopausal women to relieve local symptoms of the vulva & vagina such as dryness and inflammation of the skin layer. An applicator is supplied with each tube of cream and this is used to apply the Ovestin.
Ovestin® is used predominantly for the relief of symptoms caused by atrophy of the lower urogenital tract following the menopause. These include general vaginal/urinary symptoms, recurrent infections of the vagina and lower urinary tract, and mild urinary incontinence.
Here is the info on Ovestin:
Ovestin contains the natural hormone estriol, which is a weak estrogen. It treats urogenital symptoms without causing adverse changes to the endometrium, which means that it can be used without a progestogen in women with an intact uterus (with estrogen therapies containing estradiol, progestogens are given every month to induce a necessary protective shedding of the endometrial tissue, causing a monthly "withdrawal bleed"). The absence of progestogen-induced withdrawal bleeds with Ovestin makes it highly acceptable to women. |

In the book "Wisdom of Menopause", Dr Christiane Northrup recommends ProGest Cream by Emerita, and Phytogest Cream by Kevala. If you need something stronger, she recommends Crimone or Prochieve gel (4% to 8%) or Prometrium (oral).
I had some success with ProGest as far as having a calming effect and sleeping better, but did not see any change to my skin. After hormone testing, my gyno has put me on Prometrium and DHEA. A week into it, my skin is a bit more oily and my rosacea is flaring, probably because of the increased oiliness.
My dermatologist is encouraging me to stay the course on the hormonal treatment. He believes it will stabilize, and my skin will improve.

DHEA is known to cause acne, and I had to drop my dosage because of it. How much are you taking? I can't take more than 25mg unless I want an attack of the mega zits. (I was supposed to take 50mg)
BTW, I can't remember why off hand, but my hormone doctor and my fibro specialist are both very adamant about ONLY taking the 7-Keto brand of DHEA, and only taking it in the morning because it will keep you awake. |

Hi, bethany!
My gyno did warn me about the DHEA and testosterone cream(haven't started that yet) causing acne, but I am only taking 10 mg DHEA. So yeah, you are right, the DHEA could be causing the rosacea flare.
As for brand, the medical center has their own brand manufactured for them. The label does not say 3-acetyl-7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone, it only says dehydroepiandrosterone,micronized.
On my next visit, I'll see if I can get her to disclose some details as to who makes it for them and why they are not using 7-keto. She had no problems with me using my own brand of red yeast rice and fish oil, as long as I wasn't buying the stuff from Walmart. 
You just reminded me that DH has been taking the 7-Keto brand. I will definitely follow up on this!
As usual, bethany, you are so helpful! I've been taking the DHEA in the am because it fits into my supp routine better that way, but now I know to keep it in the am. |

The guest on this show is Dr. Henry Hess, who has some patients use 0.3% estriol in glycolic acid, applied to the face.

Very interesting. It also talks about new studies regarding the use of HRT and cancer. I'm going to talk to my gyno next week to discuss my blood exam and some sort of hormone replacement that I know I need badly I'm tired of guessing with supplements. |

I use Emerita Pro-gest Cream. So far it helps me to focus more, sleep better and most of all it eliminate the mental fogginess I was starting to have. I haven't noticed any changes with my skin just yet.
My main goal with this cream is to reduce my heavy flow, and hopefully shrink my large fibroid...atleast prevent further growth. I was told to give it a few months of consistent applications before a lot of it's benefits will be noticed. Going on 3rd month.
You can find emerita's progest everywhere. Dr. Lee also highly recommended Emerita's Pro-Gest when he was still living. |
