I have fine lines/wrinkles under my eye area, been using Avene Eluage cream for about 4 months now although just started the gel a month ago (Avene recommended using the gel on top of the cream). I use this nightly. The rest of my face loves Avene Eluage although admittedly i don't have any wrinkles on the rest of my face.
Problem is i see no results yet on the under eye lines except maybe even a worsening. I moisturize very well in the a.m. (and use SS) so i don't think it's from dryness.
I've been told to keep going with the Eluage, that one day things will start turning around. At what point to i give up and bump up and to WHAT should i graduate to, to address the lines before they get worse?
Thanks! |

There is really no way to determine when the retinol will "kick in", so to speak.
With a prescription retinoid, like Retin-A, it can take 6+ months, even up to 18 months, before seeing any real visible changes to the skin, like lines and wrinkles.
You are using retinaldehyde, an ester which, although does not need as many conversion steps in the skin to become the active form, is going to work slightly slower and needs time to work, depending on the individual's skin.
Most individuals, on any kind of retinoid, will first notice changes in the surface of the skin - less congestion, more refined texture, clearer skin, etc. That happens quickly. As for lines and wrinkles, no. This can take several months.
When using a retinoid, there is no "quick fix" or "instant gratification". The Vitamin A needs time to work. It took many years to "earn" your face, and the skin needs time to repair and change it.
The worsening lines under your eyes could be transitional, like you were told, or dehydration, but you say you are hydrating the area well.
I would not give up yet. Your skin likes it and you do not have any negative side effects and chronic side effects, like many have.
If after 6 months, you still are not seeing any results, and you feel you just need more, then maybe you need a higher strength. I do not know what strength the Avene Eluage is, and I thought Avene made two strengths - .05% and .1%. Maybe their "Retrinal" line has the stronger retinol strengths. A stronger strength is what you will need. If they do not have a stronger strength, the next step up, is a prescription retinoid, like Renova or Retin-A. |

I'm hesitate to start my Retin A journey for I heard about so many side effects. But I ordered DS laboratory's Vital A a few days ago. |

I thinks using Retin-A in any form is like a gambling game. Basicely, you need to consider the trade-offs. On one side, horrible experience in the early stage; on the other hand, impressive skin after several months... And you have to be patient and tolerant... |

Thanks for the replies!
After going into 5 months, i am considering bumping up to Avene's Retrinal line which is twice as much.
Even though it seems my under eyes are a bit more crepey, the rest of my skin has never had ANY flaking, peeling, etc even with daily use. Maybe i need something stronger?
However i will perservere even if it is a bit discouraging! |
