Skin cancer drug may smooth wrinkles
Cream treatment increases collagen production, researchers say
CHICAGO - A cream used to treat the early signs of skin cancer may erase wrinkles and leave behind younger-looking skin, U.S. researchers said.
They said Valeant Pharmaceuticals' cream Efudex, which is used to treat actinic keratoses, a precancerous form of squamous cell carcinoma, improved the appearance of skin, smoothing out rough spots and wrinkles, improving skin color, and erasing brown spots.
Sachs said the cream appears to be causing a wound healing response that leads to an increase in collagen production, which is improving the appearance of wrinkles.

I read about Efudix this morning too: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1193221/The-cancer-cream-gets-rid-sun-wrinkles.html
As one comment says: "I was diagnosed last year with solar keratosis and had to use this cream for 8 weeks. This cream should NEVER be used for anything other than for medical purposes. I had open red weeping sores on my chest, felt nausea, tired and generally unwell. It's a strong, toxic powerful drug."
The resulting skin that appears from using it is compared to "raw hamburger meat"! |

It is a rather drastic treatment just for the sake of skin improvement. I don't see mention of use for non-cancerous or precancerous sites. |

These are the "inactive" ingredients in the cream;
purified water, white petrolatum, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, propylene glycol,
polysorbate 60 and parabens (methyl and propyl.
Those ingredients on their own will smooth and plump the skin, thereby *filling* in the wrinkles somewhat.. |

I have used Efudex (known generically as Fluorouracil) for treating a pre-cancerous spot above my lip. This stuff is nothing to mess with casually. Your skin scabs up and hurts and itches for weeks (yep, just like raw hamburger meat). Then it is red for a few months after. It did get rid of my pre-cancerous spot when freezing it and using Aldara did not.
Approach cautiously. There is more info at:
http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=36627
But I do have to say...it did take care of some of my upper lip lines. But the pain, itching and unsightliness wasn't really worth it. |

Oh this does not sound like it's worth it at all! Beauty at any cost isn't my idea of a sane approach. Just my personal take. |

My dad used this for a while. It's not for the faint of heart, but it's not much different than having a CO2 treatment to get rid of lip lines.
I wonder if one could use it a few days a week and still get the wound healing benefit? I am going to have to read up on this more. |

Apparently there was a study done proving that efudex would work for precancerous lesions when used only 2 days a week for an extended period of time. It was mentioned on a skin cancer forum
but I haven't read the study myself. |

I guess I am a bit of a chicken but using something this strong for wrinkles just frightens me to no end. |

Here is an article on irritation vs. efficacy from 2004...see page 5 for the conclusion.

AK represents the initial manifestation of a continuum of clinical, histologic, and molecular abnormalities that can progress to invasive SCC. Although topical fluorouracil is effective in treating AK, conventional formulations are associated with significant facial irritation that can lead to reduced compliance and limited efficacy. Various efforts have been made to reduce irritation side effects, including alteration of dosing schedules and use of combination therapies. A low-dose, microsphere-based formulation of 0.5% fluorouracil is now available, which appears to be associated with less facial irritation than conventional fluorouracil preparations, without sacrificing effectiveness. The combination of a low-dose formulation and microsphere-based drug-delivery technology may contribute toward improved efficacy, tolerability, and compliance in the large and growing number of patients with AK. |

I've actually been using it ever since the first article was posted here. I hesitated to mention it because I didn't want to encourage anyone else. |

Lagomorph-What have your results been? This is certainly a very personal decision to try it and you have been quite brave.
I am very curious what the side effects were for you, how long the recovery and what your outcome has been so far.
Thanks for stepping up and letting us know. |

I looked over 2 web diaries of people who underwent this treatment, and I must say that there was a HUGE difference in the pics of the person that used the 5% vs. the .5% cream.
The 5% version:
http://www.sannerud.com/people/efudex/
The .5% version:
http://www.sannerud.com/people/efudex/My%20Carac%20Diary_files/frame.htm
But I have to tell you, I'm pretty sure I'm NOT signing up to trial this one! If I ended up needing to have some skin cancer removed, I would do it...but until that day comes, I don't see it happening for me!
However, I recently removed an AK from my leg with the full strength hydrogen peroxide, and I may as well have done this...the pain, swelling, etc. has been pretty bad. I have serious doubts that it will ever look normal there again. |

Huge 3rd. What has it done for your skin!
I looked at the pictures from the links Bethany posted. Wow, as much as I want to diminish some wrinkles, I think this one is out of my league. |
