(I hope this is the right place to put this...)

My dermatologist gave me Retin-A to use. However, previously, I was using Differen creme. I was not completely finished with the Differen, and she told me to finish it before I started on the Retin-A.

I opened the Retin-A the day I got it, which I think was a mistake.

But I finished my Differen, and tonight was the first time I used the Retin-A.

When I squeezed the tube, a yellowish creme came out. I wasn't sure if it was normal or not.

Then, I applied it to my face. It had a foul odor.

I checked the expiration date, and it said June 10th...

So, A. Am I in trouble? Do I need to wash it off of my face?

or B. Is the Retin-A supposed to be yellow and have a foul smell?

Thanks.

Did it say June 10, 2009, or June 10, which would mean June 2010?

In any case, usually you can use products past their expiration date -- often for months or even a year or two. But the odd color and especially the bad smell are indications that your tube has gone bad. It's probably not going to hurt you but I doubt it will help.

Oh, and don't blame yourself for opening it. I've had old tubes sitting around for quite a while after they've been opened and never experienced the discoloration or odor you describe. You just got a bad product. If you got it from your doctor, you should have no problem exchanging it.

I've had Retin A that was yellowish, but not an oder that I would discribe as foul.

Retin A I use (0.05%, by ORTHO Dermalogical) is white and has almost no smell.

Yellow colour and foul odor sound bad to me. I would check with the pharmacist or dermatologist if I were you.

Retin A can be white or yellow, both are good. The foul odor is what worries me and that does not sound right.
