I have been making smoothies for years, have never followed a recipe. I don't just do spinach though, I throw the salad in there too---that organic one from Costco, and dried grasses, like barley or wheatgrass.
I also put coconut oil in there, maca, msm, sometimes a pinch of guarana. Just about everything.
Trader Joe's has frozen pineapple for only $1.59, so lately that has been my frozen fruit. Or if I bought too many strawberries and papaya and am afraid they will go fuzzy on me. Frozen mango is good too, since they are a hassle to prep.
Lately I have been using watermelon juice as the liquid...Those are delicious! Sometimes I use raw nut milks, soy milk, etc.

Besides green smoothies, I really recommend raw chocolate smoothies. David Wolfe is the one who has those. They are also on youtube, he's everywhere. Raw chocolate is a real powerhouse!
Raw chocolate almost makes you high.

I have a bosch mixer. I used to work at a health resort, as a cook in the 70's. (meadowlark).
We had a vitamix and a bosch. Since the bosch does more things, I bought that. It pulverizes like you wouldn't believe...an ice cube turns into shaved ice in seconds type of activity. One egg white with the whips turns into meringue that looks like that mile high meringue on pies in truck stops...a great machine. Kneads bread etc too. Grates cheeses, slices, dices, haha.(no, really. It does.)

Since you have been making the smoothies for years, have you personally noticed any improvement in your skin from these?

Well glad to hear I don't have to toss out the old 'vino'.. Laughing

Thanks to all for the great info, and help on choosing the right blender..

I've decided on the "Blendtec".... It just does too many amazing things, and also looks like a cinch to clean and operate.. I didn't see a better price than $399. plus free shipping, but it looks like it's worth every penny..

Have a look at these videos, for making everything from ice cream to soup.. Amazing!

http://www.blendtec.com/videoplayer.aspx?sku=TB-621-20%26video=Live+Demonstration.flv

By Gawd, I'm bound + determined to drink myself healthy... Wink

Thanks again for the help, and wonderful information.

Your welcome...

you know though, this is a great way to get family members to eat their greens. (But I am sure all of us realized that immediately;))

The other day I had a coupon to buy one smoothie get one free at jamba juice. I got my son who is super skinny, the 800 calorie one, and I got myself the blueberry one which was a couple hundred. I tasted his, and they seemed the same!
They put ice cream and such in the high calorie ones. I honestly could not tell the difference.

These are such a nice treat.
Oh, I have also used tea in mine..or made juice icecubes. The watermelon, you wouldn't believe how much juice it makes, I turn the extra into ice cubes and put it through the blender its kind of like a slurpee.

Has anyone else been putting frozen fruit through the juicer, pretending its ice-cream?
I saw Tracey Anderson does that too, its one of her bootcamp treats.

SansSouci, what a great idea to use frozen juice cubes to add to the green smoothie. We can never finish a big watermelon without it going "soft". I freeze banana slices to use as a thickener/sweetener in my "ice creams" but never thought about juice cubes. Now I have to get out the juicer too! Sheeesh. (smiley here)
Thank You!

Its great, huh? I hate wasting stuff. I also make coffee ice cubes, to make our own frozen coffee treats. I don't think they are as good for you as a green smoothie, Wink but they are certainly cheaper than a starbucks one, and several hundred calories less as well. It also lets you get rid of coffee if you have left overs.
The raw chocolate ones are very good for you though. All kinds of magnesium. They put raw coffee nibs and raw cocoa in there. Sometimes carob. I put the frozen coffee cubes in the chocolate ones.
That techie blender looks marvelous. Its the blades I think that is the trick, look at those monster blades!

I also wanted to mention that there is some concern about using metal containers with acidic products (most stainless steel products contain nickel), and there are some scientists who do not recommend it(tomatoes, lemons, etc.). I take my shake in either glass or special plastic containers that do not outgas.

HTH

Sigma,
Thanks for the tip on the stainless steel. Can you tell us which plastics to look for that don't outgas? I saw this for the glass

Toby,

I use Whey Protein in the morning shake (as well as powdered Greens and Colostrum all by Premier Research Labs), and once the content is gone I use the containers - they are made by the same company with the patented process - "Violite Protected - dark violet bottle, proven to block light between 450-750 mm, the range known to damage nutrients.".

In general you should use the container with recycle #1 or 2 (it is in a triangle on the bottom). I will check with the company to see if there is anything available in a store that they recommend.

I also can mail you some empty ones (just PM me if you are interested and give me a bit of time).

They are not pretty but functional.

Toby, I'm not surprised one bit Smile Congratulations on such great success! Hugs to you for bringing this up. Honestly, I think 10-20 years from now green smoothies will be mainstream.

In case it helps anyone, for green smoothies, my formula is almost always:

* 300-500 calories of fruit
* 1/2 lb mixed spring greens (tender young greens; I juice the tough greens like kale, bok choi, collards, dandelion, etc.) For beginners, you probably want to start with way less and work your way up.

I like this formula because I just like to mimize food prep and keep things simple. Plus, as long as the fruit is *very* ripe, it nearly always tastes great. After doing the smoothies for a while, you become a fruit ripening specialist Wink

Personally, I tend to just put in one fruit at a time because I like it that way. I find that if you mix a lot of fruits together, it's less tasty. My favorites are pear + greens, white peaches or white nectarines + greens, honeydew melon + greens, and strawberries + orange juice from 1-3 oranges + greens.

With a couple of exceptions, I've noticed my skin reflects much more what I eat than what I put on it. I personally am sold on raw food diet with high fruit and high greens plus flax and chia seeds plus avocado plus lots of water as my skin's nutritional secrets Smile

Cheers and hugs Smile

cm5597,
Great information!ImageIt really seems like things are coming together for me. As I type I am drinking a glass of water with chia seeds in it....first time I have tried them. Do you put them in your smoothie?

Hi Toby,

I haven't tried that, though I've heard many people do that or make a porridge out of soaked chia seeds. I just eat them ground up and straight and am happy with that--tastes fine to me--but I suspect most people would not like that Wink I've heard some people notice they get a bit more bloated and their digestion slows down if they add nuts/seeds/oils to their smoothies, but others do not. My boyfriend does green smoothies somewhat frequently, and he puts flax seed oil in his smoothies. But whatever really floats your boat! Smile

Congratulations on everything falling together!!! Yay!! Smile Can't wait to hear about it all!

How long do you soak a chi seed before it starts to gel... It seems that adding to a smoothie in a gel state would maintain the "smoothness."

Claudia, the seeds will begin to gel in less than ten minutes. I have heard some people use them in place of egg whites in recipes but haven't been interested in trying that. I have put them over cold cereal and before I got to the bottom of the bowl they were "gellin".

I didn't care for it in just juice but someone posting here does and likes it. If you've ever tried Metamucil and waited too long to drink - that's what I'm talking about. I think they would work to smooth a smoothie and add some healthful benefits as well. If you try it let us know - can't hurt, might help!

Claudia,

Just found instructions for a chia seed smoothie at www.integratedhealth.com/recipes/how-to-use-chia.html. Looks pretty simple.

They first grind 1or2 T of seeds in a coffee grinder for 3-10 seconds.

Then pour water into blender - 1 cup per 1 T seeds

They start the water on low then add the ground chia "flour" and blend 4-10 seconds

Then they add the rest of the ingredients and blend.

Lastly, they let the mixture stand 5-10 minutes for water to absorb. You may wish to blend again for 2-3 seconds to "ensure a smooth, even texture".

They some people do not let it set for the 10 minutes and blend immediately.

So there you go - you were right!

My husband makes us a delicious juice every morning. We have a Champion juicer that works by masticating the fibre, so the cells stay intact'. Although some fibre is removed, the juice is very thick, and I always stir some more fibre back into mine.

We always have on hand a big bag of spinach, and use celery, carrots, pineapple, apples, oranges, beetroot, ginger, limes - with the addition of occasional extras such as kiwifruit or whatever takes our fancy. Can't do without the beetroot and ginger though, as they are a great nutritional liver detox!

We've been doing this for years, and miss it incredibly when travelling. I add msm powder and ribose (for fatigue) to mine too, and often we have a big bottle of aloe and give a slug of that.

OK, husbands just arrived with the juice, so off to enjoy it!

Thank you Toby for starting this thread, and Claudia for all your recipes and experience! I'm still taking teeny-tiny steps, drinking your spinach-banana-orange recipe every other day as this seems to be the only one I don't gag Rolling Eyes . Like I said in the other thread, I'm not too talented when it comes to creativity in the kitchen, so I'll leave the experimenting to you guys Laughing ! Thank you!

hey Swan, I'm in the same boat... I actually bought a Blendtec a couple months ago, specifically to add green smoothies to my diet, and so far they make me gag Silenced I don't notice any of the reduction of sugar cravings, etc, either, that some people apparently notice, but I love the blender anyway, and it *does* help me get a lot more veggies in my diet. Just not greens, because I don't have the masochistic streak to keep trying to force them down.

Has anyone else had to develop a taste for the greens, or are you guys just lucky and strange Wink enough to like them naturally?
