So you don't have to pick a different green to eat every day, or even 7 different ones to eat each week. That's just a guideline to ensure variety and that you are not eating the same greens all the time.
One really interesting fact is that most green leafy plants have lower concentrations of alkaloids in their leaves when they are young, and the concentration of alkaloids increases as they mature. Spinach is one example of this: the younger leaves have less oxalic acid. So if you aim to try to eat greens when they are younger and more tender and tasty, that too helps a lot!
It's so interesting to hear which things people like in their green smoothies and which they don't! Such a diversity of approaches--so cool. Currently, on my rotation list:
* *Baby* Romaine (higher in nutrients per pound than mature romaine)
* Spring green mix
* Bok choi
* Dandelion
* Mache or Lamb's lettuce
* Parsley
* Collard Greens
* Red Kale
* Dinosaur Kale
* Green Kale
Greens I don't like, but eat once in a blue moon: spinach, chard, beet greens, mustard greens, watercress, and arugula. I tend naturally not to like the greens higher in oxalic acid and the spicier greens.

Thanks, cm5597. That is what I remembered reading about that topic, as well. I guess everyone will have their different theories, recommendations, etc.
Also, wouldn't you have to eat (or drink as the case may be!) a TON of these vegetables to have an issue with alkaloids? I only put 2 big handfuls of leaves (whatever I am using) in the blender (this was per Kimberly's advice on her blog). |

Jackie, Oh yes. It is common to have detox symptoms. I had headaches, nausea and acne flare ups the first week. I'm in my second week now and the headaches and nausea are gone. The acne is still healing. Trust me, the benefits outweigh the negatives. I'm less hungry with much less cravings. Except for the acne, which is all on my chin and nasal labia area, my skin is looking much better. Jowels are gone and my skin is glowing. Also, I feel better. The foggy headed feeling that I had before the green smoothies is gone. I hope this helps. |

I tried the spring green mix yesterday and did not like it. So far the spinach is still my favorite(it is the only one I can't taste)!
I mentioned that I bought chia seeds from a local store and they cost a whopping $30 for a pound. So I was searching online yesterday and found this great site I wanted to share. It is called nutsonline (dot com) and they have lots of stuff that might be great for adding to smoothies. I haven't personally ordered from them yet but plan to in the next week or so. But, they have chia seed for $6.99/lb. They also sell powders which look interesting (dandelion root, acai, kelp, hemp, maca etc.). They also have goji berries which I haven't been able to find anywhere locally. I am having a hard time trying to narrow down what to try on my first order! Anyone ever order from them? |

Hi Tonia,
Thanks for your reply. Thank goodness these symptoms are normal lol, I was beginning to think I was having some sort of reaction!

Sorry if this is getting too off topic, but I currently use Greens+ if I can't get a lot of veggies in during the day.
I am thinking of switching and was curious if anyone has ever used Green Magma or Midori Greens.
Does anyone have any information on bitter greens and/or barely grass? |

Toby here with an update on green smoothies. I have been doing green smoothies since the second week in July and these are the changes I have seen.
-improvement in my face with sag issues
-improvement with hands and wrist area(veins now lie flat)I am slim
-skin is very plump and full of moisture(I wasn't dry before but certainly have more moisture now)
-some weight loss(I am very pleased with how I have lost some extra pounds...I have lost in my thighs and behind and my pants fit great. I haven't lost wieght in my face or neck which in the past were the first places to lose and show. To my delight, I look more toned and healthy where with weight loss before I looked gaunt)It is almost like my body knows where the weight loss needs to occur never happened this way before!
-I have decreased protein and feel fine
-I am almost never hungry(I was always hungry before)
-I feel very balanced emotionally(sometimes diet changes can make me irritable)
I feel clean inside drinking smoothies and it seems to affect my outlook in a very postive way. My work has had major changes and yet I seem more flexible and refreshed to handle the changes...this is MAJOR! I am 100%sold on green smoothies and can not imagine a day without them. I have discovered using parsley help give the refreshing taste, and I like them ice cold and sweet. My blood sugar seems perfectly balanced...I am not a diabetic but I can tell when blood sugars aren't balanced. Now I am off to fix a green smoothie....it is my new fix in life! |

I had this same initial experience--that is, I couldn't budge the cellulite and weight around my thighs, it would come off everywhere else except there...until I did high raw/green smoothies. This is what initially sold me on it. I suspect it's because the body won't lose fat with stored toxins and will preferentially lose other fat. At least, this seems to fit with my own experiences
Thanks, Toby, for being such a star! |

I purchased the chia seeds yesterday... found them at whole foods... ON SALE even. They were $10.99/lb, normally $12.99/lb. I just got a big scoop to give a whirl... Did some research finally on them last night. If you haven't already embarked on this, give it a whirl.. |

I don't know if anyone saw this websitewww.nutsonline.com and the chia seeds are 6.99 a pound...I really perfer the white ones. I blend the chia seeds in with the other ingredients and they don't stick to the cup I drink out of so much. I LOVE chia seeds and they are SO GOOD for you. |

Hi! I had an interesting experience this weekend. I went out of town for Labor Day weekend and didn't have my green smoothies for 3 days. I was absolutely starving! It was amazing to me how much more hungry I was without the smoothies. My body wanted the smoothies and planned to torment me until I gave it back. I'm on my way home right now. I can't wait to get home and blend up a smoothie.
This week I want to add in some chia seeds and acai if I can find them. |

I went without green smoothies for three days, too, Tonia, and couldn't wait to get back home to have one.
Can someone tell me how you add an avocado to your smoothie? I don't care for guacamole so don't buy avocados. Do you peel the avocado or eat the skin, too? |

Definitely peel avocados! Throw out the peel and the pit, and just use the flesh. I've had avocados in my smoothies and can't really taste them - they just make for a lovely smooth creamy texture.
I always put fresh mint and ginger and so forth in my smoothies - I do this 'cause they're good for you but they also have distinctive flavors that I like, and perhaps that's why I can't really taste the avocado. |

I agree that the avocado makes the smoothies very creamy and you cannot take them. I do not like avocados on their own, but in the smoothies they are great.
I cannot get used to the taste of the ginger. I have tried. I know it has health benefits, but when I put in just a pinch of the fresh ginger that seems to be all I taste. |

Ginger is DEF. an acquired taste. I think I first started liking it when it came with my sushi... pickled... I can't get enough of it then. Also, I had a really GOOD experience with it when on a small boat for a snorkeling trip and got EXTREMELY sick... they mixed fresh ginger and I think club soda, or maybe 7 up. I was so sick I wouldn't have noticed...
Tried the Chia seeds for the first time this morning... SUPER EASY, I soaked a table spoon in a glass of water, and then transfered the seedy gel to my smoothie... NO ADDED taste... seemingly good texture. Looks like you can use it for texture in lots of other things... interesting! |

I've ordered from them before and while the service is good, some of the items are not as pure as you would expect. For example,
Dried Strawberries
Ingredients: Strawberries, sugar, citric acid, strawberry flavor, sulphur dioxide, FD and C Red 40
Sundried Tomatoes
Ingredients: Tomatoes, salt, sulphur dioxide, glucose
I can't remember if the ingredients simply weren't listed at the time or if it didn't occur to me to check, thinking they were just dried fruit/vegetables. The ingredient listing for the organic cacao beans (raw), though, was simply organic cacao beans and the dried gogi berries were just goji berries. |

Claudia,
I mix up a batch of chia seeds & water each week and store them in a tupperware container in the fridge. I just scoop out a tbsp. or 2 and put into my smoothie. Of course the easiest way is to use them dry, I just prefer them soaked. |

Thanks for the info on how to add an avocado. I had a theory that Toby's firming skin was due to the addition of an avocado, but I guess that can't be right if you're adding an avocado to your smoothies, Rileygirl. |

I personally think Toby's results are just from a major increase in the greens, particularly since she mentioned that she was on a high protein diet prior to the green smoothies. Give it a try with the avocado, Skippie. You may be lucky, and could have the firming of the firming of the skin with it. You never know! |

I think another layer of Toby's success in addition to a food group that she sort of ignored otherwise, is all the extra water she's getting from the greens, and I'm really suspicious that the chia seeds are helping even further with that as well...In the end, it's a lot of fiber that full of water...Getting it into the system really helps the body eliminate, which keeps the intestines from sucking all the water from your body just to get things moving... INPUT anyone?? |
