Thanks, Toby. Kale is one I haven't tried. I'll have to get that next time and hope for the best. |
kale can be a strong green for some people so go lightly. I have heard that the kale that isn't curly has better flavor. I bought some today but I haven't tried it yet. |

I like the taste of the Kale in my smoothies. I had the curly too and it is my second favorite green. Spinach is still the best. I didn't know that kale is extra detoxing. I'll start using it more now that I know that. |

Reporting some updates with smoothies. I was diagnosed with severe dry eyes during the same week I started my venture with smoothies. My doctor told me I might never be able to wear contacts again. I had a test done and was producing no tears. So I ordered glasses and went along with the diagnosis thinking where there is a will, there is a way. Well folks two months later I am back to wearing my contacts and producing tears like normal. I added flaxseed oil to my smoothies and that is probably what has made the difference. The doctor is very shocked by the sudden reverse...maybe I should give him a smoothie
I would like to encourage all of you to read the material on green smoothies by Victoria Boutenko.I have both books and today gota dvd that I ordered from them that was all of 5.00!!!!It is actually two dvds running three hours. It is very good information and will help you understand the big picture for health benefits. This is the website.http://www.rawfamily.com/news/2009/09_09_1.html
Cheers to green smoothies |
Toby,
Thank you so very much for posting this. I too have been experiencing very dry eyes and was told I may have either Sjogren's Syndrome, Ocular Rosacea or both. I have to see an opthamologist. But, this gives me hope. I used to do 2 smoothies a day several years ago and then got away from it and just started them again a little over a month ago. I've been adding Chia seeds, but I think maybe I need more. I've also been told to try adding fish oil to the smoothies. One way or another I think I need to up my EFA's.
I truly enjoy reading all of your advice and experiences. Just wanted you to know it's very much appreciated. |

Used Kale yesterday and today - it is more bitter than other greens, but with a banana and an apple - really okay. What did you think Toby? |

Songbird,
Fish oil is good to add and also there is an eye exercise with Flexeffect that helps dry eyes.I have a friend with Sjogren's Syndrome and she takes medication and had plugs put in her eyes and is doing great. She can even wear her contacts. She said she is not bothered at all now....the medication really works well for her.I hope all goes well for you.
I am glad you are enjoying my posts...we are all women on a mission here and the beauty is being able to learn from one another. |

I went to the doctor this morning. I had my blood pressure checked two months ago and it was 134/90. That is about what my blood pressure has been for the last several years. This morning it was 100/60. The only change I have made is in the green smoothies. There hasn't been a change in my exercise routine. Could green smoothies really lower my blood pressure that much? That's what my blood pressure was in my 20's.
Hi Songbird! I think you could add flaxseed oil too. I would imagine the fish oil would taste funky. If you try the fish oil and like it, please let us know. |

Tonia... I think that's entirely possible. Do you think you've omitted certain foods without realizing it? |

Hi everyone, this is my first post. First, I would like to think all the ladies on this forum for sharing their experiences and advice in their quests for well-being and beauty. I tried my first green smoothie today. It was great tasting but, it had an unexpected side effect. It made me dizzy. I got a little nervous and consulted my book "The Green Smoothies Diet." Much to my relief, the author listed dizziness as one of the possible effects of starting a green smoothie program. It just seems so contradictory that eating something so healthy would make you feel sick. It seems that just about every health and beauty experiment we try has some negative consequences in the beginning. Anybody else experience negative side effects when beginning their green smoothie adventure? One other thing I learned, you really do need a blender up to the task to make these smoothies. My blender couldn't hack it and I had to use my food processor to finish. Everyone take care. |

Hi ClaudiaFE! Yes, I have excluded most of the junk in my diet. It hasn't been intentional though. I don't want it as much now. The green smoothies have eliminated most of my cravings for unhealthy foods. Even when I do crave something "bad," a few bites is enough to fulfill the craving. I guess I didn't realize that something so simple could lower your blood pressure that much. |

Packratmack, your blender may be able to handle it better if you add more cold water. I thought my blender coudln't handle it but when I added more water, it worked much better. I like the texture of the smoothie better that way too. Now I feel like I'm drinking it rather that eating it through a straw.
I add 1-2 cups of cold water depending on the amount of greens I put in the blender. |

Tonia,
That's great about your blood pressure. I'm hoping my goes down some. I've read that potassium is one of the best ways to reduce high blood pressure. So, if you've been adding bananas and avocados to your smoothies, you're getting loads of potassium. |

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to say I've followed this thread from the beginning though I haven't posted. I've been doing the green smoothie thing for a couple of months now... upped it to daily when Toby started the thread.
I've always been a big on the fruits and veggies so haven't noticed any additional health changes. I do get the green smoothie cravings and wake up thinking "what'll I put in my smoothie today."
Greens that have worked best for me are kale, spinach and mustard greens. Haven't loved swiss chard or beet greens. Romaine is a bit blah. As far as fruits, I was doing berries July / Aug as they were local and in season. I've moved on to pears (tried in-season plums and nectarines recently too -- nectarines were awesome) now and am looking forward to fresh apples in the next while. Guess I'll be moving on to frozen fruit in Oct/NOv. I've found that the combo that works best for me is one or two fruits and then either a banana or avocado to give some 'thickness' and then one or two greens. I like parsley too as I have it in my garden.
I'm with you guys -- these have become a staple of my diet and are really giving me lots of energy.
I've also per ClaudiaFE's suggestion been tracking my diet with a program and have found that just the smoothie really really ups the VIT A (as beta - carotene) content of my diet.
I've gotten my parents into this as well. They are late 70's. My dad is having a bit of a problem with diahrrea and smoothies. Do you think this could be detox? He's recently undergone chemotherapy and radiation for prostate cancer. My mother's suggesting that he take immodium for this and stay with the smoothies. Is there something more natural he can be doing?
Thanks Toby for starting this and everyone else for posting their expereinces.

Vangirl--Generally detox diarrhea, for people who are young or up to their mid-fifties, lasts 1-2 weeks *max* and comes 1-3 days following a large dietary change, if it comes at all. I don't know how long it would last for someone with the challenge of chemo and being older than that. But still, if it lasts for longer than that, I would be concerned...especially because detox, diarrhea for detox, or even diarrhea for other reasons all use up a LOT of electrolytes. Skip the immodium; it's counterproductive. I recommend just patience and relaxing through the process. The initial detox is often not easy and just requires extra rest and patience. Other than that, if your Dad is not squemish, you could have him do enemas, which might speed up or offer some relief. Or if it's really not fun for him, you can have him slow down the process by going back to eating a little less healthfully now but working his way up to more healthy food more slowly. HTH |

Dr. Marshall's recommendation is to start green smoothies in smaller dosages first (no more then 8oz) and then built up to the amount you desire.
Also, if someone is taking medication one has to be careful to ensure that the dietary change will not make it ineffective - go slowly. |

He would also have to check his BP and sugar level more often during that transition time. Hopefully, once he is set with the good routine the dosage can be reduced.
Also, you have to be especially careful if the person is taking any blood thinners (coumadin, etc.) - since many vegetables (like beets and others) would also thin the blood and combined with the medication it can be too much thinning. |

It is wise to take thing slowly for some people with the smoothies. My mother is 77 and on Coumadin and she can not have green leafy veggies or greens with vit.K. It really limits things for her and she would LOVE to have the smoothies. In my excitement over the smoothies I gave some to my furbabies.....well without going into detail one of my shih tzus lived up to the mispronouncing of her breed name. She really had a colon cleansing! I laugh now but not that morning I only gave them teaspoonful on their food. We ended up with a vet visit and the vet was all for the smoothies for the pups but starting out with less. The book Green Revolution mentioned they were good for your pets......but EASY DOES IT! |

I'm going to be having some guests in the next few weeks... one of which is kind of "known" for being "backed up" all the time... Will report...
Vangirl... what are you putting in your dad's smoothie? If it's anything that has a Pit... (did you read my poem ealier???LOL) That might be the problem... If that's the case... back off those pitted fruits... and add other kinds... Best... |

Here you go... incase you can't find it...
It's the PITS when you just can't go.
Your tummy hurts, and you move real slow.
So grab some fruit that has a PIT,
Eat them up, and soon you'll Sit.
On the potty that is, soon, you're groovin'
Pitted fruits keep the poop movin'.
Not too many, that's no fun.
With that mistake, you'll be on the run.
Hope that doesn't gross you all out... LOL...
Go for bananas, oranges, pineapple (if no heart meds)... with those greens... best!!! |

Claudia,
Does that apply to avocados, too? Because I've had more detoxing in my fifth week of green smoothies, and I wondered if it was because I had added avocado to my evening smoothies. |

Skippie... YEP!
All my knowledge here is what I learned from my Pedi when I was dealing with 2 suddenly quite constipated babies... Actually, I used avocado A LOT... easy for them to eat mushed... and kept them perfectly regular!
This is really good info for the elderly that are on so many meds (often for pain) that their colons just don't "contract" anymore... |
