I would also suggest eating the smoothie separately (4 hours after any meal that had meat, and 2 hours before any meal) and also starting with no more then 8oz in the beginning (Dr. Marshall's recommendations).
I am not sure you need enzymes with the smoothies, but it would be a great idea to have them with any cooked meal (and may be more then just bromelain). I would also be very careful with papaya, since it may cause diarrhea. Also sometimes simpler combinations of fresh fruits/greens may work better in the beginning.

I drink one smoothie each day - and it is (eek) at least 40 oz (a small amount of purified water to get the blender going but mostly tons of greens and fruits). I go through mountains of greens per week with a rotation of kale, baby mixed and spinach - also adding herbs from my garden - right now mostly parsely left to choose from). I'm checking out my big pineapple ready to be cut for tomorrows offering. Glad to know it's good for mixing with the greens Jasminerosey. You are a wealth of info for us here. I love your tips so thanks much. |

Toby that's wonderful news! Since July, when you had your initial facial improvements and body water-redistribution, have you seen other positive results on your face?
I don't know if I've had any detox, but I will say that last night I had a horrible footcramp that took 10 minutes to go away. I'm 30 and have never in my life had one like that! Could this be a detox sign or is it random? m |
The changes I saw in the beginning were dramatic, since that time the changes have come but very gradual and no more dramatic over night change. I am not sure about the foot cramp...maybe someone else can comment. |

Love the green smoothies! I've been doing them for about 3 weeks. These days, I'm only having one large smoothie in the mornings, before I eat anything too solid (so it doesn't bog down digestion)-- mostly because of the change in the weather & the approach of winter. I've gone through a detox period which lasted a few days of flu-like symptoms, and then a breakout of pimples on my cheeks (which I'm still experiencing)-- but underneath the zits, the skin looks really healthy & good, if that makes sense. Also, the zits are clearing rapidly & are different from the huge cystic ones I've gotten before. Strangely enough, the existing cystic ones, the ones that usually hang around for months, shrunk almost right away!
I might have mentioned this before, but I feel that the green smoothies are as good as a topical agent for the skin... for me, the equivalent of something like retin-a.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but I've noticed that my appetite has decreased quite a bit since adding the smoothies... just less hungry. I'm not exactly looking to lose weight, but I just thought it was interesting that by adding something in with practically negligible calories, I feel less inclined to eat. It's probably the result of my body getting better nutrition. My smoothies are really simple, greens, apple, lemon, water, a bit of stevia.
Also, the smoothies have inspired me to eat more healthfully in general (making green soups for lunch) & when I don't or can't eat so great, I don't feel bad. During the holiday season, I plan on having a green smoothie fast once a week, just to clear out all that pumpkin pie!
I've noticed that I have more energy... but I am also taking mega doses of MSM right now, so that might be contributing.
(Not to sound like a rabid convert or too New Agey, but all in all, the green smoothies have also inspired me to be more conscious about my eating habits & have a deeper appreciation for what I eat & the food that sustains me... and a greater appreciation for the environment & the world in which it was produced. All this from a green smoothie, who knew! Yikes!) |

Jeanlee - I agree with you on the appetite, a green smoothie in the morning does suppress the appetite throughout the day! If you like to add fruits, seeded grapes are usually quite inexpensive, plus there's the added value of the grapeseed... |

Dang... if calories filled us up we wouldn't have a population of obese people... It's the fiber in the smoothing that is filling. It takes room... That's actually why some are experiencing weight loss. They are getting "full" on fewer calories, and are therefore burning reserves.
Snickers = lots of EMPTY calories. It does little else than tame a sweet tooth for a bit.. |

I agree Claudia - Gotta love that fiber. Fills you up and keeps you going and no empty calories. Foods that are nutrient dense and calorie poor. It makes you feel so good to eat this way.
And agree - the green smoothie approach makes you more aware of whatever else you are eating. For many people - they would not touch a green smoothie - just the color alone...LOL. |

How is everyone's green smoothie regimen holding up after Thanksgiving? I admit I reduced my smoothie intake to only about 2 over a 4 day period, but I'm jumping back in now! |

I'm trying to get back, too, Leigh. I was really bad Thanksgiving week. I think I had a total of two all week. So, now I'm back to having one every morning for breakfast and I'm detoxing again. Hope it helps me lose that Thanksgiving weight I gained. |

Hi Leigh.. OH!! Those Hurt! Bad!! There are several reasons that I know of that can cause those Foot Cramps (also manifesting as toe cramps as well).
#1) Potassium..are you getting enough? - LOW potassium may be a factor
#2) Dehydration- are you getting enough water? #3) Walking and standing for long periods of time..
I just stumbled across this thread.. I used to get those alot. Too much fiber can cause this without enough water- that is what I do know.. Potassium as well.. Personal experience.
Now I research these smoothies on this forum.. I Love that idea. And Fiber is Great for many reasons. Hope you feel better by now.. |

Wow, thanks for the cramping insight 4AZ! Luckily I haven't had another episode since that one terrible time! Bananas are loaded with potassium, correct? I've had at least one, sometimes 2, a day recently. I didn't know that too much fiber combined with too little water could create the foot cramps! That very well may have been the cause. Please let us know what you think of the info in the thread, as it seems like you already have some solid nutritional info of your own! |

Hi Leigh,
I am no expert by any means.. Just years of researching alternative ways of treating illness, etc. Forced to actually..I can't take many medications due to a very serious health issue. I also love to feel better and maintain what I Do have as far as health. I love to defy the odds : ) I love to research and I love Medical in particular.
Bananas are loaded with Potassium. I know that too much fiber without adequate water can definitely dehydrate you, which is one cause of cramping, as well as other issues. You just have to make sure you drink plenty of water if you're consuming a lot of fiber. Too much Fiber (if not hydrated enough) can deplete minerals in the body and actually prevent absorption of them. Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus are very important for your body to function properly- especially muscles.
Medications like diuretics can also lead to cramping due to loss of sodium and potassium (this is from personal experience) AND if you get too much calcium and not enough magnesium; this could cause cramps. Who knows why you got the cramp; it could be a number of reasons. It just struck me as I was reading this, because fiber is being mentioned.
As far as this thread; I think there are several very knowledgeable people here. With anything; I always research journals, etc. before I leap. Especially FOR ME anyway where my health is concerned. |

Hi 4AZ I applaud your additional research before leaping. I agree that there are very knowledgeable people on this forum, but it's very easy to succumb when many people say that they love a product. I'm cautious and take the advice but still do additional research, because, as we've seen many times on this forum, what works well for some doesn't work for others.
I was very interested in your comments about too much fibre and too little water. Thanks for the information. It's something I hadn't really thought about. |

I know.. Who would have thought that? I certainly wouldn't have known that years ago. Fiber is Great in so many ways, but... With everything; we (I) must be careful. I can be a bit obsessive with it all; it drives my husband Nuts! But, he is not the one dealing with the health - well inadvertently he is
I am totally lost on choices in "Miracle" creams and "DIY", so I DO listen and learn there too. Health is just something I am "somewhat" knowledgeable about. For me, personally I must Always weigh the Pros and Cons very heavily. I have No choice! It has enabled me to be here to this day.. Against odds.. |

I think muscle cramps can also have to do with calcium (lack of)... check that out...
But dehydration, and lack of potassium are most likely... I've dealt with them at many times of my life... and generally, reflecting back... I'm willing to bet I was working out REALLY hard and not getting hydrated enough... taxing the muscles...
The reason fiber (especially fiber that is not naturally accompanied by water) can be dehydrating is that it TAKES water from the body to work it's way through the system. So if you're taking those powdered fiber supplements, and not following with the prescribed and probably then some water... you're asking to suck your body dry in order for it to work. I would imagine, however, that if the bulk of your fiber comes from fruit and veges which are naturally occurring in water as well.. you're not as likely to get dehydrated! Always a good idea to make sure you're drinking lots of water... obviously not sooooooo much that you mess up your electrolytes...
I'm finally getting DH on the smoothies... and I'm getting back into the swing of smoothies... Gotta admit... took a break... and then got wickedly sick... (co-inky-dink??? Maybe) |

Well I think we all fall prey to the latest fad either with makeup, hair, or fashion. I will say with the green smoothies I have been able to have at least one a day since July and am still enjoying them tremendously...they are a stable in my life now.I even have started to juice some carrots. For me it is the fresh and raw fast food The added benefits are still there with my skin and weight |

I'm with Toby. I am in for the long haul on the smoothies -always been a veggie girl but now I drink them! And you get more in that way.
I did go for five days without them right after Thanksgiving break - BF and I headed to Floridafor five days. I couldn't get my hands on a smoothie and missed them so much....
But good news is....Got to talk to Kassy while in Florida so that was better than a smoothie! |

I'm interested in knowing what ratio people are using of fruits to greens. I've been using about 3/4's fruit to 1/4 greens or maybe even less greens than that. But I think I need to change the ratio and up my greens. |

Wow, Skippie! Mine are the opposite. My smoothies are more like 3/4 greens to 1/4 fruit. It still tastes good that way. |

Do you use just one kind of fruit, because I use at least three kinds in a smoothie and sometimes four? |

Ok... I sort of eye-balled my blender this morning... about 6 cups of loose spinach (it's not packed), on 6 inch banana, one smartie (tiny little orange), about 1.5 cups of frozen pineapple and mango... and then about 1.5 cups of water... |

Wow that seems like a lot to drink at one time! I know spinach is full of water so it would become much less but how many glasses does that actually make? |

It blends down to about 3-3 1/2 cups.. I drink most of it... one of my boys will often drink about 1/2 cup...
Visually, it's 2 tall glasses... no biggy for breakfast... |

Thanks, Claudia. It does sound from what you and Tonia have said that I need to increase my greens. You must have a really big blender. I wouldn't be able to fit all that in the Blendtec. |

When I was drinking these, I always loaded the green veggies and added only 1 fruit, Skippie. I stopped, as I was having the leg and toe cramps, plus they started making me feel sick! Now, I am back to just eating my veggies! |
