Hi marcia - welcome. What has helped me the most with good maintenance of weight is green smoothies Another important tip is decrease bread/starch: wheat products; use mainly gluten free products - are you familiar with them? For bread I use Ezekial bread and try to keep non-wheat in any area I can.
I had several friends who did this and lost crazy amounts of weight and even though I work at being fit and lean I knew I wanted to decrease fermentable carbs and especially wheat (it messes with glycemic index and insulin control which regulates so much of our bodies processes). My goal is to not gain weight during these menopausal years and keep stamina. I lost weight too - a few pounds easily and without effort. Isn't Toby a peach - yes! - she's a great motivator and helpful. |

So good that you are getting on with the smoothies....they do many wonderful things for your body and the face really perks up once you are on them a while. My face responds better to smoothies and facial exercises than anything else I do. |

I totally ditto that and would also add "hydration" (both dietary and topical) and "massage" as the four things that have made the most dramatic impact for me. |

I agree - facial exercise, green smoothies/hydration and massage are at the top....
The vegetarian who won the contest - MIMI last name escapes me - is completely sold on the value of green smoothies in keeping her complexion and body beautiful at age 70+. What an inspiration. Plus Toby mentioned a book called (again from memory) "The Water Secret" which values the hydration from vegetables and fruit. This is on my must purchase at Amazon. Love this stuff. |

Hi thank you for your replies ,i am really enjoying the smoothies so far ,i think its just the fact that im doing something positive that makes me feel better. My stomach isnt as bad now just a lot of rumblings now but thats probably the large in take of liquid. This morning i needed something a bit more so i had no fat milk with a hanfull porridge oats and 1 bannana and a squeeze of honey all blended ,it just tasted like a bannana milk shake. So the rest of today i plan to have just the green smoothies with mostly veg and a piece of fruit.Sister sweets
i think i will give the gluten free a try and the non wheat bread although i dont eat a lot of bread anyway but its worth a try.Toby that lady looks fantastic i hope i look like that in my seventies.Right now though i just want to feel good i have had chronic fatigue for many years that was brought on by a bout of glandilur fever. So i am looking for a bit more energy and i do need to lose a bit of weight probably around a stone.Anyway thank you all for your support i will keep you updated on my progress.kind regards marcia |

wow - mimi looks fabulous.
I just wanted to say i've been drinking green smoothies off and on for 4 months. i liked the way they made me feel so much that i have moved towards a raw food "diet". It's difficult at times, so i allow myself a meal with the kids or out to dinner w/ friends...i'm raw all day and about 5 nights a week. I must say my skin/eyes glow, my energy is off the charts and i am forced thru clarity of body/mind to make changes i've been putting off...what i haven't done (that is change) myself, the "universe" has...with out getting to preachy, raw food is the best spiritual program i've been on, oh, and smoothies were the gateway drug!! I looovve to cook, so i don't really see myself going 100% raw, but it is a remarkable approach to eating/health/life |

marcia,
Maybe just add a Tbs. of coconut oil to your smoothies to help smooth the way. I don't know what your regular diet consists of, but your body absolutely needs some healthy fats you just cannot live without them. The most common complaint with detox regarding tummy issues is running too often.
Also make sure you are drinking plenty of fluid aside from what's in the smoothie, all the fiber tends to soak up fluids. |

Hi Girls!
I've just had my first green smoothie after seeing them referred to a couple of times on other threads and getting a PM from Keliu re another thread where she mentioned how great green smoothies have been for her.
I've read the first 5 or so pages so I still have heaps of reading to do.
My smoothie was:
- Pack of frozen spinach
- 1 banana
- 3 tablespoons of yoghurt
- 1 cup of pineapple juice
Is it okay to use yoghurt & pineapple juice or does the dairy & fructose work against the benefits of green smoothies? |

Many people in this forum say they have lost weight drinking smoothies. Is there anything you can put in them to make them fattening? I know this probably would be difficult considering they are made of vegetables and fruit. But, is it possible? I don't want to lose any weight. I actually would like to gain weight. I really want to start drinking smoothies for the health benefits but, if I am going to lose weight then it would not be a great idea for me. |

Some people drank smoothies as a meal replacement but if you drink them as an additional supplement to the meals...like an in between snack and add avocados or bananas that would help from losing weight. |

Second night of doing "green" smoothies. Tonight I've used:
- frozen broccoli
- cup of pineapple juice
- 6 tablespoons of mango yoghurt
- 1 banana
- cup of coleslaw
These green smoothies are awesome for using up vegies/fruit that I'd normally throw out. I would've had to have thrown out the coleslaw tomorrow and I don't like over ripe bananas to eat but they're fine for the smoothies. Plus using frozen greens adds a lovely coldness to the smoothie.
I'm using this as a meal replacement in the evening too as a way to help me lose a couple of kilograms before my wedding (in 3.5 weeks).
I'll keep you posted |

Hi CG,
frozen veggies are precooked..so while 'ok' for smoothies depending on your desires..they are traditionally created w/fresh uncooked greens (ie. fresh bunches of spinach..or pkgs of fresh baby spinach, stalks of broccoli, etc.)
Also if your mango yogurt is sweetened w/sugar/dextrose/etc it's prob going to be counterproductive for your skin..as sugar tends to creates a cross linking of cells ..fine if you want the 'taste' but not to think of it as a regenerating food...perhaps you could add fresh or frozen( i would personally thaw it first..but most use it frozen)mango(frozen fruit is generally not pre-cooked when frozen)....MORE TO SAY.... PERHAPS OTHERS WILL CHIME IN...bottom linwe though is what feels right to you...best to start somewhere.and go from there as it feels right for you |

Thanks Jasmine. I really appreciate your thoughts. I agree that starting somewhere that is comfortable for me is the main thing. So whilst I get used to green smoothies I'll stick with something that tastes good to me and then I'll slowly decrease my yoghurt or move to unflavoured yoghurt (this is a high quality yoghurt with heaps of lactobacillus)...from Vaalia's website
"Each 100 grams of Vaalia Yoghurt contains a minimum of 100,000,000 colony forming units of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or LGG. This means that there is enough of the culture to survive the digestive tract and naturally maintain and regulate the digestive system"
So the unflavoured should be fine? Any comments?
I thoght frozen vegetables were snap frozen straight after being picked? Mind you now that I think of it the spinach wouldn't be - but the broccoli? Again all comments are greatly appreciated x |

Agree, CG. Items like frozen french fries are heavily processed, but most vegetables are flash frozen. Conventional wisdom is that they may have more health benefits than fresh veggies as they don't deteriorate during travel or while sitting on a shelf waiting to be bought. If you can't buy direct from the farmer or grow your own, frozen veggies are often the best option.
I use frozen spinach and broccoli too for baking/cooking. The flavor isn't as good as the stuff I buy at the farmers' markets, but it is otherwise as good as fresh, just a lot colder! |

Hermosa, my nderstanding is that broccoli...and other frozen veggies aren't flash frozen raw (they certainly don't feel/ taste/cook like they are raw to me).
anyway, for what it's worth the question was asked on yahoo questions and this is the answer:
"Most vegetables, broccoli included, are blanched at least 60 seconds then shocked in cold water to lock in color and to stop the cooking process, then packaged, then frozen"
the answerer then goes on to say that peppers and onions are not blanched first..so they are apparently frozen raw.
again, not saying that it's not 'ok' to use them..but just to be aware that there is a dif in vitality (it's important, naturally, to start where one's comfortble) but the primary goal, according to my understanding of a green smoothie, is the vitality (actually measureabl) of the ingredients...especially the greens that are used. |

CG,
the best way to experience what i'm speaking re vitality of the raw green is to experiment and see the dif in using fresh raw spinach or fresh raw broccoli (the raw spinach will taste closer to the taste of the frozen..the raw broccoli may not be so pleasing to your palate, at least at first, as the frozen broccoli...but you will get a sense of the energy that's really what green smoothies are about (the energy/vitality is a factor that is as significant as the 'nutrient' factor when making green smoothies..(as they were originally conceived in the raw food movement)..and although they can also be detoxing at first...this vital force brought into your body is what will eventually give you luminous skin.
Again there's much more to say..
but i don't want to overwhelm you or take away your personal enjoyment and experimentation..but i also want to give you a sense of direction if you really want to get the skin benefits that people are raving about on this thread. |

Thank you girls! Gosh I love EDS ((hugs)).
Jasmine - I appreciate all of the information you're giving me - thank you. I don't feel overwhelmed so bring it on
I do agree that raw would be much better and I'll work my way up to that.
I find this all really exciting and motivating and love hearing from everyone.

This is my understanding as well, even OJ is higher in C when frozen compared to what's purchased at the supermarket!
As far as veggies and taste goes I blanched and froze my own from my garden for years up north and the taste compared to what could be store bought was astronomical! I had garden fresh taste all winter long when the supermarket produce was horrid. The farm stands were closed for the season so frozen was the optimum choice! |
