Hi everyone,
I wondered if this could cause an imbalance as i've been taking it for quite a while, (about 1000mg 3 times a day), but in the last year or so, I've started to feel really fatigued. I'm 39 so wondered if I could be perimenopausal, as I've become incredibly emotional and am struggling with handling stress etc. I also feel quite depressed, but thought that might be due to the chronic tiredness. Anyway, I read that EPO is estrogen dominant, and so thought I'd ask if any of you ladies have experienced something similar ?
many thanks

Hi Jackie,
I've been taking 4000 mg Evening Primrose Oil daily (6000 mg when I get my period) for exactly the opposite reasons! I used to be super emotional, moody, and depressed until my nutritionist advised me to try EPO 1 year ago. While it doesn't work as well as antidepressants / antianxiety meds, I think it's definitely calmed me down a lot. Another thing is I did get a blood test recently (for my acne), and I don't have any hormonal imbalances, so I don't think the EPO does anything there. HTH! |

I agree with fat_swan. I have been taking 4000 mg of Evening Primrose Oil for the past 10 years and have not acquired any hormonal imbalance.
However, EPO is an omega 6 fatty acid and should be taken with omega 3 and 9 so as not to have an imbalance in these essential fatty acids. That's why Black Currant Oil is one of the best sources of Omega 6 because it contains all of the three essential fatty acids in the correct ratio.
Evening Primrose Oil should also be taken with vitamin E. |

Hello Jackie....have a blood test done for anemia. At your age this is a strong possibility. |

You can get a blood panel done that includes hormones to confirm if it is perimenopause or something else.. |

I would suggest to check your thyroid with the doctor, it is just a simple blood test. It could be a reason why you are feeling tired. As far as I know Evening Primrose Oil will not be a cause for hormonal imbalance, at least not with the amount you are taking. |

I take 1000mg EPO daily for mood swings,
depression and hormonal balance. When I do not take it I definitely see a big diff. in depression. By the way I also suffer from severe fatigue and the only thing that has helped me is one capsule of Estrin D daily. Many people do not like this product because they take 2 capsules, which is too much. It has given me my life back. Other wise I was not able to do anything but sleep! |

Evening Primrose Oil should be quite safe to be taken by most people so far. If you have doubts, it is always good to have a body check and raise the concern to the doctor. Take care pal. |

I had taken 1000mg/day evening primrose oil before for mense pain.
Is it too much to take 3000/4000mg??
Although it is supplement, it should have limited dosage. |

Hi everyone,
thanks for all your replies. I had blood tests done in the past when I was first complaining of feeling tired, and they were all fine. I really don;t feel like myself anymore, and i'm convincing myself it's perimenopausal. My aunt went into the menopause early, so I'm thinking this could be a strong possibility,
thanks

Hi, I have hypothyroidism. I'm 38 and for 10 years I was on Levoxyl. From the time I was on that I have lost hair.
Since then I have been looking for ways of regrowing my hair. Just recently I have been put back on Synthroid and should be regrowing hair but I haven't. So I'm looking for something to regrow hair where I have bald spots at.
With EPO having fat in it, I'm wondering how much is good to take? I've taken Biotin, used Nuhair, taken vitamins for hair, nail and skin and nothing has worked. The vitamins are helping my nails but not my hair.
I've also tried serum to help eyelashes grow and that doesn't work either.
This sounds like it works well, so want to try it, but I don't want to take too much of it and gain weight as it has fat in it.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello! I'm sure EPO has a negligible amount of fat in it, so I wouldn't worry about weight gain. I have taken it on and off for years and never noticed an issue. For hair regrowth, especially in concentrated spots, have you looked into copper peptide? Lots of women and men (my boyfriend included) have had success with a product called Folligen.
Hope this helps! |

In addition to checking for hypothyroid, also test for anemia and have your Vitamin D level checked. All three of these will cause fatigue, hair loss, dry skin, and a whole lot of other symptoms.
Most people want their Vitamin D level to be around 50; 30 is the minimum but is not optimal; 80 would be good for people who have health issues like cancer. To make sufficient Vitamin D naturally, one has to expose 20 percent of the skin to the sun for at least 20 minutes a day when the sun is strong. Wearing sunscreen prevents your body from making D, and washing/showering within 12 hours of sun prevents you from absorbing the Vitamin D naturally. Almost everyone who works indoors 9-5 is Vitamin D deficient. Why doctors do not automatically test for it when they do the annual exam is beyond me! It's just simple logic and science. If you get tested and find you do need to supplement with D, make sure you take Vitamin D3, the natural form, and NOT Vitamin D2, the synthetic form, which has been shown not to be absorbed well by the body. |
