Hi,

Was wondering what anyone's experience with Differin was like. I used the first week and my skin absolutely glowed and looked flawless. However, the second my face looks terrible, broken out and dry. Any advice?

everyone skin is different, but it does takes abt 4wks i think to see result.
check out their website http://www.differin.com/index_nonflash.cfm for more information.
i hav used it for 6mths now and it has helped me to control most of the overbreaks, so i personally find differin to be effective! Wink
but again, everyone's skin is different, so just try it for a few more wks and see what happen.

Hey! I just got differin gel 2 days ago.. so I just started using it last night. I also got Benzaclin.. My acne is mild to moderate.. I just never have a clear face..always some sort of breakout. I was on Amoxicillin for the past 10 days because of strepthroat, and it seemed that i broke out even more. Can you breakout from that in just 10 days?? I am really hoping differin works for me...and I hope the "initial breakout" isn't more than I can handle.. Any commens or suggestions on differin would be really appreciated. Thanks!Smile

I have been using Differin for 8 years. It has been so long ago that I don't recall if I broke out more when I first started using it but I do know that when you start Differin your acne can get worse before it gets better. I did experience a lot of irritation and dryness when I first started Differin. I think part of the problem with me was that I was using a product containing sulfur at the same time as the Differin which made my irritation worse. I think that stopping the sulfur containing product and allowing my skin to become accustomed to the Differin really helped. I have found Differin to be effective but everyone is different. You do need to give it at least a month and possibly even two months (some would say even 3 months but I don't necessarily agree with that) to see if it will really work for you.

If your skin is dry I would definetly use a moisturizer. I would also avoid any harsh cleansers or other products. When I over dry or irritate my skin I find that my acne gets worse, so I always try to avoid that. I would try to avoid products that contain sulfur or salicylic acid. The package insert for Differin specifically says to not use these with Differin. That being said I know that some people can use Differin and salicylic acid without a problem but for me it always made my skin very irritated.

KiTTY I also used Benzaclin (DUAC as well which is pretty much the same). I found that my skin had a hard time dealing with this and the Differin at the same time. In fact I just stopped using the Duac because I was tired of my skin being so irritated. I hope you have better luck with the Benzaclin that I did. BTW it did help with my acne (except for the most recent time that I used it). As for the Amoxicillin I would think that it would have helped clear up your acne. Did you notice more breakouts while you were using the Amoxicillin or after you stopped using it? If afterwards it could have been sort or a rebound reaction.

My final suggestion: be patient! I know this is hard to do but you really need to give your acne medications a chance to work. It doesn't happen overnight...I wish it did though. Confused

I used Differin during my teens, I have not touched the stuff for over 7 years!!
I have found Tea Tree Oil to be far more effective for treating acne as a topical application, if it burns then just mix a couple of drops with your normal moisturiser.
My SO also used Differin for years but converted to Witch Hazel, followed by Tea Tree Oil mixed in with an Oil Free moisturiser and he too swears by it.

As for the Amoxicilin (sp), yes I was put on this in my teens and whilst it went some way to clear my skin, it also brought with it digestive problems and regular bouts of thrush as it was destrying all the natural bacteria in my stomach.
I much prefer Vitamin supplements for keeping my skin clear, the best skin clearers are internal supplements of Zinc, Vitamin A and a good B Complex. I have not suffered from real acne for well over 5 years now.

When I was on Differin my skin flaked like there was no tomorrow (I have oily skin). I haven't touched that in a long long time.

My experience with Differin was pretty bad as well. It dried me out severely and seemed to make my skin worse. I was not able to work through any purging ... I threw it out. ( Just my experience)
