Can Retin A be used with NeoStrata HQ plus? Or does the inclusion of glycolic acid in the NeoStrata make it a no-no? I have fairly good skin because I've used Retin A for years. It is great for my age in fact, but I have a little patch of melasma on my jawline that gets worse in summer. I would like to get rid of it and control it during summer. Anyone successfully use this combination or would RA at night and NeoStrata in the AM be better and effective? |

Oggi, I never used the NeoStrata cream you are talking about, but my rule of thumb is not to mix anything with RA at night. So, my advice would be to use RA on its own in the PM, and try applying any other actives in the AM.
If you need to use NS cream at night, I would suggest you alternate nights using RA and NS.
Good luck.

My suggestion is not to use AHA and retin-A at the same time. Both of them will accelerate exfoliating of the skin and stimulate skin cell to renew. I don't think too much exfoliation will do any good. At least they should not be used simultaneously for a long time. |

The Neostrata HQ did not lighten my brown spot. With HQ product, it works at first and eventually when you stop putting it on, it does not work anymore. |

I find that even the next morning after applying retin-a, my skin will react to almost all active products as well as certain sunscreens. I would try alternating AHA's and Retin-A. |

Why would it need to work anymore, after it has done its job? Or do you mean the dark spot comes back? |

With Hydroquinone you have to keep using it at least a few nights a week or your pigmentation will return. |

Oh, I see. Thank you for the warning. I suppose a 2% cream now and again for maintenance could keep it under control? Did yours come back worse? Scary.... |

I did Nu Derm and did not stay on maintenance, and yes the pigmentation does come back. Mine did not come back worse or darker, but the same spots came back up. So, if you are going to start HQ, just make sure you are aware that you will need to continue to use it to keep the spots away. |

Do not use Neostrata with Obagi products.
Obagi has products to improve your skin. Using both products will worsen what you are trying to improve. Also suncscreen is important and a hat when you want to go outside the house. I would not suggest using 2 products at all.

I don't know anything about Obagi, but dermatologists do prescribe hydroquinone and retin-a together for pigmentation problems. I now know that retin-a and HQ is okay under medical supervision but an aha or bha applied at the same time is a no no. |
