I've colored my own hair for years and I love the color it's really natural looking and lots of dimensions. The problem is I have terrible allergies along with really sensitive eyes and skin. Last week I got downright sick for 2 days after I colored my hair, this has happened a lot to me and I'm at the point where I want to find a good hair color that doesn't have harmful chemicals.
I can't go gray but facing feeling this bad every 3 weeks is really difficult, and also I'm afraid it's just going to get worse. Any other experiences with this and or natural/organic hair colors? I'm medium Blonde (my hair did turn out really great...sigh....) |

I bought one called Herbatint -www.herbatint.co.uk. Haven't used it yet.
I got it at a chemist/ health food store, they had a couple of other brands too. One was Naturetint I guess. HTH |

How'd it turn out? I really want to switch but the color I use is so perfect, perfectly toxic too. |

I've used it or something very similar I am in USA I purchased it at local health food store and I think Whole Foods carries it as well. I have been coloring for years never had any issues but do prefer all natural and organic. Now what you want to know most I am sure it worked beautifully covered very well (I have a fair amount of grey that is actually snow white) my natural color is quite dark with auburn highlights. The brand comes in a wide selection of colors and covered as well as any regular product it was quite gentle and left hair with a lot of shine and dimension. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a more natural alternative. I have been very pleased with it.

Just remember there are henna dyes too. Not sure how wide the range of colours is |

I think Henna is wonderful until the grey hits! It is not good for covering grey if you have a lot. Also you need to wait before using it if you have used permanent dye, I can't stand the roots showing that long and I think my white hairs just might turn pink. LOL |

I think maybe hennas have improved recently or something? My mom (who's 65) has a lot of white hair, and she uses henna. The henna will leave the white hair golden-like (she buys the golden color) and so it looks like she has highlights.... it looks really pretty! And I think it takes her only 20 minutes or so... I don't know but she's really happy about it... even her stylist tells her to not use dyes since the henna looks so good on her. I don't know if my mom is a special case or what... |

Jose,
that's sounds beautiful on your mom, I on the other hand have a combo of snow white against extremely DARK brown with auburn highlights. From all the Henna I have seen it does not recommend use on hair with over a small percentage of grey. I think it really depends on how dark your natural color is and the amount of grey. I couldn't risk it. I checked out a few brands very recently, and that's why I chose the Naturetint (whatever it is called) it covers my white very well.

I'm going to check it out. My problem is that I'm blonde and we have to juggle how to not be brassy or ashy but in between. I LOVE the color I use now but don't love the chemicals so I'm going to put some time into finding that great color in an organic brand. Thanks for all the feedback! |

Secretly,
they do have a great range of color, to avoid brassiness look for a neutral base or ash base it should say on the box.

I am fairly certain Henna is a safe choice while pregnant, the ones mentioned from the health food stores may say on the package. As a mom of four (now adult) kids I think you should run anything that may be a concern by your doctor. You may want to write the ingredients down before next prenatal visit.

Here gals,
The web site with color chart info and if you click on a color of interest it will list all ingredients. I did not post them as they are different depending on the color. These are carried by Whole Foods and they are really picky as far as how safe and pure what they sell is.

Thank you! It looks like if I mixed a couple of them I'd get the color I'm using now. Wonder if you can mix them? |

I'm going to try it but haven't had time (just time to look for boots online that ended up not fitting ugh!).
I love the mad scientist line, I've mixed nail polish forever but never hair colors! |

Secretly,
You are really a girl after my own heart! I have been mixing nail polish for years too LOL. I also buy a brand of MMU that sells pure pigments and I have a field day mixing up
eye shadows with it!

Hi... I don't use a totally chem free hair color... But this is the brand I use...
http://www.developlus.com/products/satincolor/index.html
I get the developer in a 20. I've had my hair done professionally, but theirs is sooooooo strong that it burns my scalp. I can't tolerate it for some reason. (not really sensitive to other stuff.)
Aloe is the base ingredient. There is ammonia... very low...
Would be curious about the brand of henna that the mom with totally grey hair uses... I hate using chemicals on my head... |

Claudia,
why not PM Josie and ask about the Henna brand, she may not be watching the thread?

My mom uses and likes henna because it is a more natural alternative- she has dark brown hair and is greying - it turns the grey into a red coppery color and looks like she's highlighted her hair. |
