Hi All,

Just read something interesting from Leslie Baumann in prevention magazine on the use of vitamin B3 (niacinamide)

"To reduce irritation from your retinoid, use it in conjunction with niacinamide. Mix them together in the palm of your hand before applying-they won't inactivate each other, besides decreasing side effects, the combo produces superior anti-aging benefits" Very Happy

That sounds great! Where do you get a topical niacinamide? Just did a google search with no results for liquid pure niacinamide.

You can buy niacinamide from the herbarie, lotion crafter, bulkactives, skinactives and ingredients to die for.

As far as how much to use? your guess is as good as mine, the article I read didn't elaborate. Sad

I suppose you could make a niacinamide serum and use it after you apply your retina, not sure though if that would be just as effective Confused

Hmmm I have powder B3 in capsule form to take as a supplement. I wonder if I could mix that with the gel my derm proscribed me?

So Nia24, which contains vitamin B3 complex is good to use with retinoids?

How about taking vitamin B3 supplements? Will that be helpful?

CPs (copper peptides) can also help w/ irritation from retinoids. They sure did for me. You can get CPs from Skin Biology.

That's great to know that niacinamide will also help.

carmina - I don't think taking the topical form of B3 will do any good.

This is so interesting, I'm going to give it a try, even though I don't have much irritation any more.

Here's my recipe for a Glucosamine and Niacinamide serum - they're best used together apparently.

G & N Serum 1oz

½ tsp. Glucosamine (5%)
¼ tsp. Niacinamide (2.5%)
5 tsp. Distilled water
1 tsp. Glycerin

I always apply this before Retin-A - maybe that's why I've never experienced any irritation. Very Happy

Keliu,

Thx for your recipe!

I have stopped using Taz for 2 weeks after my face felt like burning, even I put hydrosol on it.

With your recipe, I'll resume my journey soon.

Hi Keliu

Thanks for the info, I never thought about putting it on before the retina.

Regarding your recipe, is it necessary to add the glycerin? Do you think I can just add the G & N to distilled water? or is there something I can use in place of the glycerin? Also, I read that niacinamide has to stay within the 5.0-7.0 ph range otherwise it turns to nicotinic acid, have you heard of this?

Thanks for your input Smile

^^ Bulkactives has it at a reasonable price.

Thanks Keliu for that simple recipe. I'm going to try it tonight. I just started on Retin A and my face is sooooo dry and stinging!

I put EVOO to combat the dryness. Is that okay? Or should I just stick with Keliu's recipe and no oils?

I just add the glycerin to give it a little slip. I think Propylene Glycol is a substitute for Glycerin - but if you don't want to use that just leave it out. You could also add Hyaluronic Acid.

I haven't read about the ph factor - and, in truth, have never tested the ph of my serum. I guess we'll all have to run out and get some litmus paper.

Yes, I buy mine from Bulkactives too. I'm a huge fan of all facial oils and use a variety - it's fine to apply them over Retin-A.

Hi Keliu,

Do you put moisturizer or oil over Retin-A? If so, what is it?

After applying Retin-A I wait 30 mins then apply a little Emu Oil. I stopped using moisturiser creams ages ago because I find they clog my skin, I seem to do much better with oils. But that's just me. Very Happy

found this information from the herbarie:

"To avoid the hydrolysis of Niacinamide to nicotinic acid, we recommend the pH of the finished formulation be in the range of 5.0 to 7.0. The hydrolysis of Niacinamide to nicotinic acid can result in skin flushing, redness and burning. Please note that Niacinamide added to pure distilled water will have the desired pH of 6.0-7.0."

So I guess if you just add distilled water the ph should be fine, the question is do other actives added to the niacinamide change the ph?

ph seems to be an important factor in everything thats put on our skin. I assume if the ph isn't correct the product doesn't work. I wonder if this is true for everything or just a few actives? I just wish I knew more about this subject.

I've also found that emu oil or avocado oil reduces irritation. Like other posters, I apply Retin-A, then wait 5 to 30 minutes (depending on how close it is to bedtime) and apply the oil over top. I've found that emu or avocado oil makes my skin look and feel much better than using moisturizer at night.
