Hey... Toby just posted the other day about green smoothies for pets... Victoria Boutenko recommends this..
HOWEVER: I just read this today... didn't know...
Do NOT give you pet an Avocado... They contain persin, which damages the heart muscles. They are poisonous to most species, birds are especially sensitive... Possible effects of Poisoning: Vomiting; diarrhea (in dogs), lethargy, difficulty breathing (in birds and rodents)
Other toxic or otherwise "bad" foods for your dog listed in the article read (Real Simple Oct 2009): Chocolate, Grapes, Raisins, Garlic, onions, xylitol, alcoholic drinks, raw yeast, bread dough, and macadamia nuts... |

Great find Claudia....it could have saved me a 55.00 vet bill and neither vet mentioned that the avocado could be a problem . My vet went no further than thinking it was too cleansing and would need to take things slower...glad I didn't continue to try. |

Yeah... I had never heard that either... I guess unlike Chocolate... avocado isn't as a popular oops...
Had you given your dog Avocado? Well, one time I doubt it a big deal. Other than the laxative effect. Although I could see how people might think it's ok, perhaps giving a shiny coat???? |

I don't know if avocados were in those smoothies but with my dog weighing 8 pounds it wouldn't take a lot. She was very sick and shaking so I had to make an early dash to the ER vet. We were fortunate because she has a kidney problem and could have dehydrated easily. |

Wow Claudia, I can't thank you enough for posting this. I was truly considering giving my dog some of my smoothie each day and I use alot of avocados. She's only 4lbs and has had trouble with rashes and her hair falling out this past year. I thought maybe a little bit of "good" nutrition couldn't hurt. I knew about chocolate, garlic, & onions, but I've never heard about avocados. Thanks so much for the info. |

Garlic too. I've always heard that garlic is good to feed a dog to repel fleas. |
