I've been using a straightener with a silicone product beforehand for a while now, but this nasty gunk builds up on the plates from all the heated-up product. I never used to care, but ever since I bought a nicer ghd straightener, I'd like to keep it closer to pristine.
Anyone have any tips for getting that product gunk off? I tried CLR but it didn't work, and I'm freaked out about a) leaving a harsh chemical residue that will frazzle my hair, and b) getting water or moisture in the joins and ruining the circuitry inside the iron.
Any tips would be much appreciated! |

I don't use a flat iron but I do use a curling iron everyday and I also deal with the issue of hairspray and styling product buildup on the iron.
I use Easy Off Oven Cleaner to clean off all the buildup on my iron. I've been doing this for at least 5 years now and have never experienced any damage to my irons. The oven cleaner really works well and very fast. Just spray your iron, let it sit for a minute or two and wipe off with a damp rag. When the buildup is all off I wipe the iron down with a damp clean cloth and it's ready to go. Nice and clean.
They do make a special cleaner for styling appliances but I can't remeber the name right now. |

Oh yay, thank you for the tip! To be honest, I've always been a renter who hardly used the oven, so I've actually NEVER cleaned out an oven. Didn't even occur to me! That sounds perfect though. I'll inquire about the styling-specific one too, but something tells me the oven idea will be cheaper and more effective anyway. Thanks again! |
