This is a for what it's worth:

Recommendation for Disinfection of dermarollers by Sara Vaughter:

What you need is commonly referred as "surgical alcohol".
Most commonly used are ethanol (60-90%), 1-propanol (60-70%) and 2-propanol/isopropanol (70-80%) or mixtures of these alcohols.

As long as you buy "surgical alcohol" then its OK

Isn't the Dermawand a high frequency device? And it is supposed to kill bacteria.

Does anyone know where to buy surgical alcohol from?

I got mine at my work. I'm sure a surgical or medical supply place would carry it.

I think I'm going to get some Barbicide at Sally's. Also, I was wondering what you all thought about Grapefruit Seed Extract; it's really effective and you dilute it with water. I've shelved the bleach idea. I hate the smell and there's something else pleasant to use (Barbicide). I'm only wondering about the Grapefruit Seed Extract because I will be iced in through the weekend, it looks like, and I do have that here at home. Perfect time to do a roll and let my face swell. Laughing

Tonia, I told my sister thank you from all of us. She was happy to help. I'm really glad this came up.

Brierrose, I don't think I would roll either if I were exposed at work. And you don't sound "preachy!" lol

DM, you truly may have saved someone from a horrible infection. Apparently, you never know where a resistant bacteria can pop up. It will be a relief to know that we are rolling absolutely safely. Thank you again for posting about the possibility of such infections. ~ JJ

Rubbing alcohol as an antiseptic

There are two general types of rubbing alcohol, one made primarily from ethyl alcohol (ethanol) and the other from isopropyl alcohol. Both kill bacteria okay but are less effective on viruses. It is best if a surface is physically cleaned (washed with soap and water) before being rubbed with alcohol. As it evaporates, it sucks out the insides of bacteria and viruses and kills them. However, they won't be dead until all the alcohol has evaporated.
Wikipedia has a good article on rubbing alcohol that addresses its uses as an antiseptic.

Also, isopropyl alcohol requires about 10 minutes on the skin's surface to kill bacteria, and about 3 minutes on hard surfaces. The main purpose when they use alcohol on the skin before an injection, ect. is to clean and remove oil from the skin.
Rubbing alcohol as an antiseptic

Rubbing alcohol is usually isopropyl alcohol not ethyl alcohol. Drinking alcohol is usually ethyl alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is not a good antiseptic because it contains only 40% alcohol. To be a good antiseptic isopropyl alcohol must contain at least 70% alcohol. Seventy percent Isopropyl or ethyl alcohol will kill bacteria, virus and fungus in 15 to 30 seconds.
Please visit Wikipedia "alcohol rubs" or "hand antiseptic" for an extensive discussion on the antiseptic (germ killing) properties of ethyl and isopropyl alcohols.

Keliu, I think surgical alcohol is known as surgical spirit in the UK; not sure about Australia.

jj,
I use GSE as a very short term preservative for DIY, it's really not all that strong and you are diluting it, I am not really sure it's the best choice but it's better than using nothing! You know it's also a nutritional supplement. I have always kept a few different things in the house especially with 4 kids, hibiclens (surgical scrub) it's used by nurses and surgeons prior to performing surgery, but can't be used on mucous membranes, Betadine solution and Betadine scrub! That's what happens when you have doctors and nurses as friends Smile

OMG, I know, I have two brothers-in-law who are surgeons and my mom was a nurse. I have things that I don't even know the use for. Laughing I have some liquor in the cabinet, so if worse comes to worse, I'll have a rolling party by myself - me and my roller and the bottle of vodka. My GSE is the capsules I take, and then I have a little bottle of the liquid I got for my earthquake kit (we're on a faultline). Isn't that pitiful, raiding my earthquake kit for the sake of vanity! Bad Grin

Thanks, I think it's called surgical spirit here. According to Wikipedia, Rubbing Alcohol is the same as Surgical Spirit.

I'm just going to continue using Isocol Rubbing Alcohol.

Yep, one of those OR the fact that I'm smack-dab in the path of a gigantic scary thing on weather radar. We just went from Winter Storm Warning to Winter Storm Watch. I would absolutely hate to be stuck at home with everything iced over - no power, no computer, no forums. Shock

Keliu, you'll be fine using that, I'm sure. This is completely off-topic, but you are one of the few people I know who have used the Isomers Freeze products. Which did you like the best? TIA! ~ jj

Keliu - Check the label to be sure it is antiseptic alcohol with at least 70% alcohol. Some are lower %. Don't want nasty MRSA infections or any other surprises. Not on the boat. or anywhere!

It contains 640mL/L isopropyl alcohol - is that good or bad? I suppose that's 64% alcolhol - that'll do won't it?

Well 6% less won't make much difference will it? I don't want to start getting too paranoid here.

Sorry Kelilu I am not trying to make anyone paranoid, but reading that some just rinse with hot water and think that's good enough, and the fact staff bacteria live on all our skin surfaces being a bit more careful about sterility seems quite prudent to me!

I agree that cleanliness is very important. My paranoia statement was related to the difference of 64% to 70% alcohol not being something to worry about. I once got septicemia from pricking my finger on a cactus, so I know that "s**t happens"!

It sure does! I don't think you have to worry about that small difference in the alchohol!
Glad you got better from that cactus prick Smile
