Hi,
I would like to know if Retinaldehyde, like Avene Elugae, can be used in the morning; in other words, does it like retinoid that it will turn toxic when it is exposed to sun?
I would like to use Taz & Avene in pm & am respectively. |

As far as I know, all forms of Vitamin A derived retinoids (i.e., retinol, retinaldehyde, tretinoic acid) are photo "unstable" - they will break down in the presence of light.
They do not turn "toxic" or no one would use them. They should only be used at night for best results.
There are those that use the Vitamin A derived retinoids during the day, as well as night, and that is their choice, but they are not getting the maximum benefits because of the photodegradation that occurs when used in the day.
Tazorac (Tazarotene) and Differin (Adapalene) are synthetic forms of retinoids and are photostable and can be used day or night. |

WCSmurfette,
Thx for your info!
If so, I'll alternate the Avene with Taz in the pm. |

Two other considerations--all retinoids cause heightened sun sensitivity, so using them at night may help mitigate that to a degree. Also, actives work best in general when they are not mixed with other products which may change the pH of the skin and which might block direct contact between the product and the skin. So using the product at night means that you won't have sunscreen or makeup in competition with your retinoid. |
