Hello All
What choices are you going to make for your Healthier New Year?
I am joining a local community garden where we get a patch of soil and grow our own produce: veggies, herbs and fruits. The step after this will be to can and freeze the homegrown stuff for winter and share with family and friends.
The other plan that I'm super-excited about is to start using Spirulina and Chorella as daily food sources. I suggest anyone interested read a wonderful on-line booklet to be found on TheChlorellaFactor.com The health benefits are truly amazing. I know many of you will enjoy reading it... Especially you Green Smoothie folks.
Happy New Year to all my friends on EDS....

Sis, I really love the spirulina. When I lived in Europe, I used to pick this up all the time at the drugstore. When I took it consistantly, I noticed that I had lots of energy and my skin was glowing. I need to get back to that.
As for me, I am going to keep doing what I have been doing. I gained alot of weight when I moved back to the states but so far I lost 30 lbs and have about 20 more to go. So I am going to continue green smoothies, taking all my supplements, eating at least 9 servings of fruit and veg a day and lots of water.
Exercise: Continue with the Tibetan rites, workout to my extensive exercise video collection, no lipo-lipo and skin brushing and ofcoarse, facial exercise.
It's alot of stuff to do, but I always say I am my own hobby! |

Sister Sweets - I'm thinking about starting green smoothies for the new year (and eating better in general). Can you share a couple of your fave recipes? Thanks!
Beyond eating better, I'm going to exercise and try to smile and laugh more often. |

Avoid These 7 Foods and You're Off To A Healthier New Year

1. Canned Tomatoes
The expert: Fredrick vom Saal, PhD, an endocrinologist at the University of Missouri who studies bisphenol-A
The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Acidity -- a prominent characteristic of tomatoes -- causes BPA to leach into your food.
2. Corn-Fed Beef
The expert: Joel Salatin, co-owner of Polyface Farms and author of books on sustainable farming
Cattle were designed to eat grass, not grains. But farmers today feed their animals corn and soybeans, which fatten up the animals faster for slaughter. A recent comprehensive study found that compared with corn-fed beef, grass-fed beef is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
3. Microwave Popcorn
The expert: Olga Naidenko, PhD, a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group
Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize -- and migrate into your popcorn.
4. Nonorganic Potatoes
The expert: Jeffrey Moyer, chair of the National Organic Standards Board
Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes they're treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they're dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting.
5. Farmed Salmon
The expert: David Carpenter, MD, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany
Nature didn't intend for salmon to be crammed into pens and fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers. As a result, farmed salmon is lower in vitamin D and higher in contaminants, including carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT.
6. Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones
The expert: Rick North, project director of the Campaign for Safe Food at the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility
Milk producers treat their dairy cattle with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST, as it is also known) to boost milk production. But rBGH also increases udder infections and even pus in the milk. It also leads to higher levels of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor in milk. In people, high levels of IGF-1 may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers.
7. Conventional Apples
The expert: Mark Kastel, codirector of the Cornucopia Institute
If fall fruits held a "most doused in pesticides contest," apples would win. And increasing numbers of studies are starting to link a higher body burden of pesticides with Parkinson's disease.

Hi Rockalilly - Here are some suggestions from the Green Smoothie thread.
Dr. OZ green smoothie
•1 lemon 1/2 cup parsley,
•chopped 1 rib of celery
•2 big handfuls of Spinach
•1 pince of peeled ginger
•1 medium cucumber
•2 apples preferred amount of ice cubes (which is of course, optional)
Another one from Toby:
1 1/2 cups blueberries
I/2 of an avocado(small dark one)
acai powder(up to you on the amount)
1/4 cup water
1 1/2 cup ice
I alternate mine. For example
One day I will have a couple handfuls of Kale, a small bunch of parsely, stalk of celery, pineapple and an apple. About a cup or less of water to get the whole thing blended out and it's good to go.
The next day maybe handfuls of spinach, a cucumber, lemon juice banana and a bunch of blueberries (very unscientific!). If I have tomatoes I have added them.
Melon does not work.
I also sometimes add flax seeds (ground up, coconut oil is good, my newest thing will be chia).
I use whatever I have:
Tomatoes work, cucumbers, and celery give a fresh taste to the bitter greens. I've used baby greens instead of spinach or kale. Experiment - you really can't go too wrong as long as you are using the greens. |

Thank you Sister Sweets! I appreciate the recipes and the information on picking the right types of foods. I'll have to do a search for the thread, I didn't know there was one. I have a bunch of Michael Pollan's books (Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food) on my list to read for the new year. Guess I'll have to stock up on organic apples for my smoothies!
Wishing everyone a safe, happy and healthy New Year! |

I absolutely love spirulina!
Since I'm not a big water drinker I use the powdered one that you mix with water so then I get the extra glass or two of water in the morning. |

Nice to see some of my eds "sisters" making a concerted effort towards inner and outer health.
I bought a new aluminum water bottle from the Victoria and Albert museum so that will keep me hydrated. I threw out the crappy food in my cupboard and I want to learn to make great food choices. I think I'm going to get an iPhone so I am looking forward to the apps for food and exercise tracking. I want to be more organized so I can stay on top of this excellent information you guys provide.
Good luck all ! You have my support. |
