On another thread,a few of us were talking about Charla Krupp's How Not to Look Old (http://www.amazon.com/How-Not-Look-Old-Effortless/dp/0446699977/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8)
There's also a book called Skincare Revolution (I think it's this one: http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Skincare-Revolution-Beautiful-Life-At/dp/4770030835/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262462232&sr=1-1)
From what I can tell on amazon (not meaning to give them a plug -- I shop at my local indie bookstore when I can, but that website does seem to list the most books per topic) the newer "beauty" books go way beyond hair and makeup and discuss nutrition, massage, and a lot of the same techniques we talk about here.
I don't always trust the reviews I read online because so often they are posted by friends of the author (you can get a clue when the reviewer has only reviewed that one item and gives it effusive praise and 5 stars!) and would rather hear if you've found any books lately that have been helpful. |

I have this on order as a Christmas to me! I was impressed by the see inside and Skippie's recommendation. I'll let you know once I actually get to read it through!

You guys sold me! I ordered Skincare last night. Now, I guess, the challenge is figuring out how to obtain the proper lotions, which aren't really available in the U.S. |

Oh, sorry, here is one more, not exactly on skincare, but on cellulite reduction:
"Cellulite My Arse!" by Shonagh Walker.
It's a small book and it doesn't include all known cellulite reduction techniques, but it's good for those who want to get a start on non-invasive approaches to reducing cellulite. It's not particularly mind-blowing information and is more of a practical book "let's get started book", but for me, it's certainty worth the price of purchase. |

You don't really have to use the lotion that she mentioned in her book, serum is the same. |

Do you have a serum you recommend critic?
Also, I looked at the book you recommended on amazon and marked it to buy. Thanks - looks good. Sis. |

I am using my leftover serum and samples, but surely will buy La Colline when I am going to Hong Kong next month, because my skin looks unbelievable beautiful after one time treatment at La Colline spa (they did not use any machine) and the massage techniques is same as "Skincare Revolution" described, I believe I can do the same at home.
I bought Food Doctor and You are what you eat after watching their programs on TV during my maternity leave (sorry about can't loss weight) All are common sense, so don't have to buy both. |

Hi everyone,
I am currently reading Skincare Revolution, but I am having trouble figuring out the lotion mask. Are the cotton squares just plain cotton wool ? Also, it states to put the lotion on the square, and then separate the square - but wouldn't that mean the lotion only being on a small part of the cotton ?
Apols if I sound a bit dense here, but if someone could just explain how they do it, that would be greatly appreciated,
thanks

With the lotion mask, its cotton squares, but you can also use a cotton flannel, cut up if you like. Whatever you use, its important that it has the ability to hold water. So ordinary cotton wool might be a good choice, you just want to make sure its not the kind that is a combo of wool and plasticy kind of material (as that can scratch the skin surface).
When you apply the lotion to the squares, your supposed to try and distribute the lotion amongst the squares itself. I saw the lady in question do a dema of it a couple of years ago, and although the video doesn't demo it quite the same way, I have to say that watching her do it was a complete joyful process. She kind of goes into a beautiful peaceful meditative state, and I'm sure thats partly to do with the success of using it. She looked good, and I think works in quite a holistic way, but her idea on facial exercises (saying A, E, I, O, U with exagerated expressions) I don't think will please the majority out there as there is little if any resistance or toning ability in them.
The other thing I remember her recommending (and I must add she didn't speak English during the presentation apart from a very broken English greeting and goodbye at the end, she was assisted by a translator), she also did a demo on a model where she used NARs lotion, and covered the surface of the skin in a patting motion with her fingers using both water and the lotion and then applying the damp cotton.
I'm all for ways of externally hydrating the skin and although I often use rinsing techniques to do so, this is just as an effective way using her lotion mask.
My problem with serums is that I worry you might dilute the serum somewhat, and most serums are by their nature designed to provide nutrients to the skin not act as a lotion to moisturise it, but hey if it works - keep doing it!

Yikes just realised I've answered a lotion question above on what should be a skincare book thread. Here are some goodies:

~ Crystal Andrus
AGELESS AGEING (Paperback)
~ LESLIE KENTON (this one was published back in 1987 before anyone mentions the title)
REJUVENATE NOW: DE-AGE YOUR BODY WITH LESLIE'S DYNAMIC 10 DAY DE-TOX PLAN [IMPORT] (Paperback)
~ LESLIE KENTON
SKIN REVOLUTION: SMOOTH, FIRM SKIN FOREVER [IMPORT] (Paperback)
~ LESLIE KENTON
The Truth About Beauty: Transform Your Looks And Your Life From The Inside Out (Paperback)
~ Kat James
(I see someone mentioned this one already - but its really a good read!).
Awakening Beauty the Dr. Hauschka Way (Hardcover)
~ Susan West Kurz (has some facial exercises in it too)
Eating For Beauty (Paperback)
~ David Wolfe (this one is so interesting with the raw food and kirlian photography) |

thanks Sean,
I think the cotton flannel might be a good way to go as we can just re-use them. Makes more sense now,
thanks again

Sean, thanks for the heads up on the Kenton books. I'd never heard of her, but checked her website, then found a bunch of her books on amazon for under a dollar so ordered the 10 day detox one.
I read the Kat James book after seeing a lot of recommendations for it. Although she had some good points, on the whole the book left me feeling cold, like it had very high standards for me and I would never measure up. But it was well worth paying 75 cents to the library (they charge us for holds!) to read it. |

Skippie had been doing the lotion mask for a while (she brought up the subject in October), and she had great improvements in her skin tone. I believe she posted links in the thread Havana mentioned about for the video on doing the lotion mask. At that thread, there is also discussion on what lotion to use and the material. |

About books:
"The joy of beauty" by Leslie Kenton.
There is another new edition, but can't get hold of it. I tried with amazon the "New Joy of beauty" and they kept telling me they had it,... but they didn't.
This is a book I read in my twenties,(about twenty years ago, ). Time...
This book really impressed me with the holistic point of view (creams, exercises, diet, supplements, stress relief methods...).
I also have the book by her "Journey to freedom", it is a bit dense, spiritual, nothing to do with superficial earth beauty, related to shamanic methods,... I've tried to follow it... but I find it difficult to achieve the results so easily as in the book. Anyhow, this latest is a more spiritual book, the one I mention "The Joy of Beauty" has really helped me, yet I know there is an update which is important to the new discoveries. |

Sounds fascinating! I just checked http://www.alibris.com/ and they have a bunch of "new Joy" copies from 2000. I would guess other used booksellers have it also. Amazon doesn't, but they have a few links to sellers. |

I have 20+ beauty books, which are written by Japanese drs or beauty gurus and translated in Chinese. I have learned a lot from these books, as they covered everything that I am interested. The best part is these books are very cheap to get, no more than USD3 per book, and all in color-printed, with tons of photos to follow. |

Thanks Hermosa! I'm not all that good at 'searching' on the web... never thought about 'looking' around to see... Searched and found the actual Leslie Kenton page by the way, didn't realize she had so many books published!
In any case, by the little I know I highly recommend reading her advices. |

Many on the forum know me as one who favors science over marketing, so it probably doesn't come as a surprise to learn that my favorite books for skincare are dermatology textbooks filled with studies - and I usually buy them on Amazon.
