I'm posting this to raise awareness of the need to use Biodegradable Sunscreens.

I've been using these for a couple of years, and am glad I have after reading this information. It confirms the info I've found out the last few years.

DH & I are taking our family on a trip to Mexico this month. We are planning an excursion to Cozumel for a snorkeling trip and the tour operators are insisting that anyone on their tour use a Biodegradable SS. They say it is a federal regulation for the marine parks in Mexico

"Biodegradable sunblock is environmentally friendly sunscreen that lacks the harmful ingredients that are destroying the world's coral reefs. These sunscreens are biodegradable, meaning they break down naturally in the environment, and eco-friendly, meaning that they minimize damage to the environment"

Other types of SS(chemical ones) are suffocating the reefs and bleaching them. As much as 25% of the reefs are in imminent danger of collapse and another 25% are suffering long term damage.

Get rid of your chemical SS that include chemicals like PABA, octinoxate, oxybenzone, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor and the preservative butylparaben. Buy one that has the physical proerties in it like titanium dioxide (TiO2) or zinc oxide (ZnO)

Read about this at this page from the tour opererator. They also list some names of recommended SS. One I will pick up while down there is Mexitan. I've been wanting that one for a couple of years.

Last year I switched to using Skin Biology's Suntan Lotion and Body Lotion (an after sun lotion). My skin did GREAT in the sun - even with prolonged exposure. If I ended up red at all at the end of the day - the body lotion wold get rid of the redness by morning. These were developed with the ecosystem in mind. The Suntan lotion has copper peptides and a small % of TiO2 in it. The CPs act as an anti-oxidant and help to protect the skin and help to repair the damage the sun can cause. The body lotion also has CPs in it. Skin Bio has a lot of information on this exact thing that the tour company is talking about. Read this link for more information on chemical SS from SB. There are additional links with more info on sun and your health and cancer here

The really cool thing about this is that my DH was the one that pointed this out to me saying we needed to get a Biodegradable SS for this tour! (Little does he know that we've been using them for quite a while now - LOL)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Great information Smile

I wasn't aware of this and from now on will definitely be using a biodegradable sunscreen. Thanks again for the link your tour company provided. Hope you have an amazing time snorkeling in Cozumel!!

I think everyone should use biodegradable too, thanks for pointing it out.

Burnout is also biodegrable and I think it's pretty good.

I've actually noticed the water around me like an oil slick from my sunscreen. I have thought about this issue because of seeing all the oil. And I happened to be snorkeling in Ningaloo Reef at the time. Not good.

Mishey: So shocking! Change to biodegradable - there are some good ones out there Very Happy.
I'm going to investigate Australian ones that are biodegradable too as now I am in Australia also.
One that is biodegradable is UV Natural Baby SPF 30 + sunscreen.

I second the Burnout. It is also non-whitening, unlike most physical sunscreens.
