L’Orèal are launching their new product Youth Code, which is a "gene cream" in their words - the product resets the gene code - the day cream will be £14.99 and available in Boots.

It is available from the 21st January, and I will be buying a pot and giving it a try.

In America, Proctor & Gamble has had great success with genomics research, resulting in Pro-X Intensive Wrinkle Protocol, but as yet have no plans to launch in the UK.

I didn't know that the Pro-X line was based on genome research. I hadn't really looked into it because the main actives of this line are niacinamide, Matrixyl, and carnosine. I wanted to try my hand at a DIY of this product, but having not gotten around to it yet, I may try the ready-made. Hmmm. Youth code, indeed...

Photoqueen,
I've just looked at the Superdrug website and according to that, Youth Code will only be available in Superdrug stores.
Regards, Holmes.

You know, this type of announcement by L'Oreal, and to a lesser extent, Nu Skin, both surprises me and doesn't surprise me. Let me explain.

L'Oreal sustained HUGE financial losses in 2009 mainly due to the fact that they sell "high end" cosmetics at very high prices. It took the world wide recession to show consumers that there are a LOT of small cosmetic companies producing and selling very good, and very active cosmetics at a very reasonable price. Consumers literally flocked to companies like this (including my own). L'Oreal may not recover from this loss for a very, very long time. The same is true for most of the big cosmetic houses.

Now, the way they are going to attack this, as they always do, is with marketing spin. They will release products like this with claims that quite simply stretch the imagination!

But, what bothers me is saying this product can in any way affect the "genes" of the user. All cosmetic chemists in the industry know that they make COSMETICS, not drugs. A COSMETIC cannot change or alter ANY bodily function in ANY way, or it becomes a drug. In my opinion, to be able to go into the body and literally change the gene code is indeed changing a major bodily function.

So, either the claims for this product are widely exaggerated and not true, or this product will have to be branded and sold as a drug.

We'll see what the future holds for products such as this.

John

NOTCH - Do you think it will be effective as a product? I haven't seen the ingredients list - just curious now that PQ brought it up.

If we could have a look at the ingredients list, we could break it down by the raw materials, and see if it has the ability to be effective or not.

If anyone has the ingredients list for this product, please post it here for us.

John

John

I will get them when I see the product this week and send them to you.

Great to have a expert like you on the case.

Very best wishes

The 1st time I heard about the 'genes' and 'DNA' theory's was with Remergent products, the 2nd time was in Daniel Yarosh's book "The New Science Of Perfect Skin, who was at that time connected with 'Remergent'... (I really enjoyed that book and feel I learned quite a bit from it.)

Since then he moved onto P & G, and is involved with L'Oreal. Here's a little article that's interesting;

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=anti-aging-treatment-science

Like John I am also bothered by any cosmetic company who would suggest that genes and/or DNA could be manipulated by the use of a cream, but I feel most people know enough to take that 'spin' with a grain of salt...

Because cosmetics has become the gazillion dollar industry that it is, it's only natural that all manufacturers want their piece of the pie... It's then up to us as consumers to learn all we can about the really beneficial ingredients, so we can make wise choices on what is best for us individually.

At this point in time we have many really + truly skin *changing* actives available to us, and people don't have to spend a small fortune to have the best... Olay has always been a favorite of mine, and I especially like it now because I can increase the actives I'm interested in so easily... Very Happy L'Oreal is now hot on their heels. I love my drugstore finds. They are ready made bases for me!

Thank you for the article Kassy - easy to follow without science jargon (ho hum I read enough of that stuff at work). Sounds like L'Oreal is really trying to get something good going.
But mostly I want to know what you put in the oil of olay Bad Grin

LOL! I just hunt for the product that already has the actives I want, then kick them up a notch (BAM!), much like 'Emeril'... Laughing

I thought Yarosh went to do R&D for Estee Lauder? Are they a P&G company that I am not aware of?

Totally agree with you NOTCH, also, just knowing about genes doesn't help. As an example scientists has know the genes of Huntingtons disease for yeas but there still is no cure..
And know L'oreal can alter genes..? Laughing

Seems like there are a lot of silicon type ingredients there. I think my skin would be smothered.

Apparently Loreal's Youthcode line is very similar to Lancomes Genefique:

Lately I have seen ads for cosmetics with the "genes of apples" in them whatever that means.
Supposedly those genes can affect human skin somehow?

I remember reading that in adverts for one of the brands owned by a model and sold online (forget the name, but theline with the French doctor S-something).

I actually tried one of the ProX products, they are not that great.
I tried the spot reducing product, or whatever it is for age spots?
It did not work..or barely worked on some marksleft from blemishes.

There was a money back g arantee, and I happily got my moneyback Smile

I've had better luck with Mario badescu whitening mask. Just using the sample I had made a huge difference in my skin.

I doubt their mask has high acid content as it has never burned my skin and usual acids do.
They have their whole ingredient list online too if anyone is curious...

Cosmetic companies are really crazy thesedays with their stories.

They seem to promise everything like bringing back your dead relatives...

Kind of amusing sometimes really.
I like the story of Creme de laMer "miracle broth..."
