Good afternoon.

I have been a long time reader...and I have been trying to find some posts that answer my questions but I cant seem to dig through them all!!

I have been on retin a since october...about every other night. I need a good moisturizer...and I was also reading on here about Alphaderma CE...and it seems fantastic.

Is that a moisturizer? and can I use that in conujunction WITH retin a?

any help..or links would be great.

Thanks so much!

Hi Jo and welcome to this forum!
I use Alphaderma as my morning moisturizer and Retin-A at night. I have normal skin and it gives me just the right amount of moisture.
I don't know what your skin issues are but it works well for me and I think it's an excellent product. HTH

jo123ellen,

I am planning on starting Retin A soon and have been picking Rileygirl's brain, she has a lot if experience, her advice is if you can don't use a moisturizer, but if you really feel the need for something over it at night wait 1 hour between application of the Retin A and anything you use over it!

An instruction says that after washing face, to let skin dry 20 minutes before applying retin a. What happens if you don't wait? Why does the instruction say to wait?

If I am not mistaken since water is a penetration enhancer it may cause it to go deeper faster. That might cause irritation. It might also have to do with having your skin at it's normal ph, not 100% sure. I do know there is a reason!

Natalyn, the reason to wait 20 minutes is so the RA is less irritating to your skin. I found this to be true when I was starting to use RA. If I applied it too soon after washing it was more irritating than if I waited.

Thank you both, DM and BR. That makes perfect sense. I use only the least strength, and I have been too lazy to wait. I am glad that it has not irritated my skin so far. I must either have thick skin or the strength is weak enough to apply right away. Razz

Hi JoEllen Smile ,

If you want to go the most natural route, BHO's are the best moisturizers for the skin. Like Emu Oil or Squalane.

If you are a new Retin-A user, then waiting 20 -30 min after cleansing will slow the uptake to reduce surface dryness and those awful peelies. Some people get redness and irritation as well, but not everyone. Once you skin adjusts, waiting isn't always necessary.

That is good that you are starting off with a low dose. That is the best approach!

I found that waiting irritates my skin less, but when I told my derm she said that it didn't really matter and that is was not necessary to wait.
I'm now on my 10th week and I usually don't wait more than a few minutes now, and the tret is not irritating at all.

Also, I'm in Korea these days, and it is such a difference from the dry Scandinavian climate.. today is my first day since before Christmas that my skin actually feels nice and not dry and itchy
