Hi everyone!
For the past 2 months I have had a flaky, red and blotchy, and itchy face. I have not been eating differently and I always drink water and never alcohol. I have been using dove soap to wash my face and differin for a few of my pimples then I use oil of olay complete moisturizer. I do this twice a day. I have been using make up daily to cover it up for the past month and a half. I have no idea what it is and I can not go to a dermatologist. Can someone please help me?? Are there any home remedies or over the counter things I can use to get rid of the redness and flakiness?
Thanks |

I would ditch any products that might have fragrance in them.
I would also get rid of Any color cosmetics that might be old with bacteria looming...
Have you changed laundry detergent (pillows wash clothes), shampoos, body soaps etc.) An allergy doesn't necessarily visible show its symptoms the minute you use the allergen. Think back further than 2 months... what's been new in the last YEAR?
And since you can't get a medical opinion (however, I would at least head over to a local clinic to see if they can help you)... I would go to the drug store and get some cortisone cream.
Sounds like an allergy... resulting in some form of contact dermatitis. Until you eliminate whatever is causing the problem... it will continue. I would not use the cortisone cream long term. |

Oh... and you should also be able to talk to a pharmacist for free about what creams might be best for you and any interactions to look for, as well as appropriate applications...
I'm not a DR... by ANY stretch... |

I agree 100% with Claudia. You really need to find out what is causing your skin to react like this, so you can eliminate it.
Have you changed your facial care routine at all? Although sometimes you can suddenly start reacting adversely to something you've always been fine with. This happened to me with bath/shower products. When I started to avoid products containing sodium laureth sulphate, my skin became a whole lot happier.
If you do try cortisone cream, then don't use it for longer than a week.
Also, Claudia's right about trying to see someone about this if at all possible. I'm in the UK and am not exactly sure how your health system works, but do you have a general practioner/family doctor who could take a look for you. Obviously, they're not as knowledgeable as a consultant, but they may be able to advise you better than we can, especially if they can see your skin.
Finally, I'd try treating your facial skin very gently and kindly in the meantime. When I suffered a nasty reaction around my eyes, I washed my face only with water and put a little Vaseline over afterwards. Very simple is the best way to aid recovery. |

Have you been using a sunscreen? The differin can make your skin super sensitive. And I see you are using it 2 times a day.
Just throwing some thoughts here.
And I agree with majorb. If I had a reaction I would reduce whatever products I am using on my face to a bare minimum. Then when I am ready I would slowly re-introduce them one by one, so I can figure out exactly what was causing the reaction.
I also want to add that it is totally possible to suddenly develop an allergy to something you were doing fine on before. Skin is ever changing. |

Thanks everyone for the help!
It definitely may be allergies, after all I am allergic to just about everything!
It also may be the differin. A friend gave it to me for acne and it drys my skin out. Also, it may be kind of old. I stopped using it today, so we will see how that goes.
What does cortisone cream do?
I don't have health insurance so I am not able to get a medical opinion, but I will definitely try going to the pharmacist to get some advice!
Someone told me about using oatmeal on my face. Has anyone heard of doing that?
Thanks guys! |

Hi bvrollins72!
It does sound like a possible allergic reaction, especially with the differin being old and given to you by a friend. I agree with all the above advice. If for some reason your skin doesn't settle down and it is acting more on the dry/dehydrated side with flakiness, Cosmedix has an amazing product that is a post peel anti-inflammatory called "Rescue". You may want to give it a try!! Wish you the best of luck with your situation |

Cortisone is a steroidal cream and has great anti-inflammatory properties, but amongst other potential side effects, it can also thin your skin with overuse.
Oatmeal can help to soften and soothe skin.
How is your skin today? |

differin twice a day is too much i think. it is gentler than retin-a, but still will make your face dry. and I do not think use a soap to wash face is a good idea, i know dove is suppose to be gentle and moisture, but after all it is still a soap, i personally do not think it is a good idea, espcially while you are using differin. try to use some gentle cleanser.
and does this itchy red problem begin after you use differin? if yes, it might be a reaction to differin.
my suggestion will be, first of all, slow down on differin, once per day, or once every two day, use small amount each time, and use a gentle cleanser.
good luck |

I have a similar thing. I only use avocado, castor and jojoba oil and some strange moisturising cream. I think it's due to the lack of DHT in the skin. But perhaps it's from the dry weather?
Anyway, I'm going to see a dermatologist. I hope they don't decide to fade out by the day. |

Hi everyone!
After not using the differin for just two days the redness has slightly gone down, which is great, but the flakiness is still out of control!
Does anyone know any better face wash than dove soap that is inexpensive? I've tried many many different products, but they all just seem to dry my face out. I have very sensative skin!
What is DHT?
Thanks so much!! |

Oil of olay and Dove products are loaded with fragrance. A not so expensive alternative might be Cetaphil face wash. I would look for a hydrating, frangrance free moisturizer. Hope your skin feels better soon! |

You can try using oatmeal to wash if you already have some oatmeal lying around. Do keep in mind you will need to prepare it regularly. I don't think the oatmeal solution keeps well without a preservative.
Earth Science A-D-E Creamy Cleanser for Dry/Sensitive Skin. This one has a pH 5.5. Very gentle and won't overstrip your skin.
Yay on the redness going down! Looks like you figured out the culprit! The flakiness will go away in time. You need to be gentle with your skin. And have patience. All the best! |
