So I need some advice from the Obagi 'experts' out there! I've been using the system for 3 mobths now and I really love it. One of my big concerns has been acne and I have found that my acne is now infrequent but BIG and very sore. Anyone have insight on why or recommendations on what to do for it? My skin is done the reactive phase of the retina A and is no longer red and sore.
Also, how long do the tubes of cream last on average? I'm almost done my container of 'clear'.
One more thing...I've been reading about doing 16 weeks, but then what? What do you use after?
Thanks for the input! |

Hi Deborah,
Are you using the Nuderm system? It's recommended to do the program for 18 weeks and then maintenance so you can "maintain" your results. At that point, you continue to use Nuderm products 2-3 times per week, but others if you want to.
I replaced Clear about every six weeks -- I did the full program for 28 weeks and Blender and Exfoderm twice during my stint.
I chose to use a different cleanser, toner, and sunscreen along the way.
As for your breakouts, it could be that your skin is still purging. But it sounds like your breakouts are becoming less frequent.
How are your results with Obagi so far? Keep us posted! |

Thanks! I am using the full NuDerm program. Like I said, the acne is big sucker ones and it makes sense if my skin is still purging. They hurt so much though!! Do you think I should be using anything else on them or just stick with the system?
Do you recommend any particular moisturizer for after I'm done with the Obagi?

Have you checked into Obagi's Clenziderm system that is for acne? You may be able to incorporate one of those products into the Nu Derm.
Regarding your question on the products, if you are using Nu Derm on the normal regimen, you should be replacing your Clear once every 30 days. The Exfoderm and Blender would be replaced at around the 4 month mark. |

i think it might be bacause of retin-a. because I have the same problem after I use retin-a for several monthes. I do not have that much pimples anymore, but each time I get one, it is big (I do not have those kind of big pimples before I use retin-a)
I am thinking....maybe because it is not easy for the pimples to come out under the retin-a, so they need to really become strong and big to grow out? haha |

its my 6th day...and in one word I can describe my face....FIRE!!
I am a thirty two year old mother who recently moved to Hawaii three months ago from sunny California. And the sun has done damage. I have always noticed the brown spots but now they are very noticeable not even makeup can hide. So Obagi to the rescue at least I hope.
Any how I am going to bare the pain/fire feeling when washing my face just keep my obagi pamphlet near me to fan my face when I am applying the system. |

You will be very happy what Obagi can do for those sun spots! Good luck to you! |

The huge pimples can also be from the tretinoin doing it's action. It actually says on their pamphlet that things can get worse in the beginning before it can get better. |

No, just keep using the amount you are supposed to use. It is normal for some to get the pimples. It will pass. |

Be careful about picking, Naomi. You'll end up with scarring. You're still in the beginning phase of Nuderm: Out with the old... so, you're definitely purging right now but things WILL get better as you continue with the program.
The first six weeks can be the hardest! |

i m using obagi nuderm and i am on a month and a halfmark,,,so i have just started my 7th week...My acne is gone ,,,the one caused by retin a,,,has healed now and disappeared,,,blotchiness gone,,,vibrant skin,,,much much much improvement...My skin is different now...
I replaced clear today,,,which means after the 6th week...and i think the blender and exfoderm willlast by the end of 3rd monht,,,so yes i ll have to purchase it once again,,,so on a total the obagi nuderm system along with tretinoin 0.1% will cost me( within 600 $ ...hmmmm not to much,,,not too less but the results i am getting from it,,,i wont mind paying a 2000 $...
This is the max i can afford now but after 3 years,,,i wuld not mind paying 5000 dollars for these results since my hubby would have completed his heme/onc fellowship by then,,,
Wayyyyyy to go |

I'm with you Naomi. I'm 44 and on day 11 (started Feb 8th) and I'm on fire! I'm not peeling as bad anymore but the pain seems to be getting worse and I'm red as a beet. The only time I'm not burning is after I cleanse and before toner goes on.
I'm a little lost on what I actually should be doing. I was just given the Tretinoin Cream with little instruction. Nothing else. After doing some research I have purchased the Gentle Cleanser, Toner and Healthy Skin Sunblock. Now I see I need to get the Clear, Blender and Exfoderm.
Currently:
PM: cleansing then using the Tretinoin Cream.
AM: cleansing, toner, and a moisturizer because my skin is super tight and dry now. I know this is to be expected and now know that we aren't supposed to use moisturizer on the program but if I don't my skin is stretched tight.
I was trying to continue to wear a light foundation to minimize the redness but it's so bad it doesn't help and it, of course, burns So now I'm just dusting some loose powder on and hoping my skin adjusts soon.
For those of you that have been using it for a while, can I pick your brains?
Do you have any recommendations based on my ramblings?
What did or do you do about the tightness of your skin if you don't use moisturizer?
What exactly is the maintenance program? I've read that you do a 6 week program every 4 months. Other places I've read that you continue to use the Tretinoin a couple times a week.
I would also just like to say that this is a great forum and I'm glad I found it because there is a wealth of knowledge here! |

Hi Karen,
Are you using the tretinoin cream alone without any of the Obagi Nuderm products? Have you consulted a derm/physician?
When starting Nuderm, I feel it's best to purchase the entire kit as all the products are designed to work together so you can achieve the best results. This is a rigorous treatment for your skin with prescription grade products.
The entire process is 18 weeks (using all the products consistently and daily) and then maintenance after that. It's quite a journey and most people will experience redness, burning, dryness, and/or peeling at some point.
EDS is a great place to be! Try searching Obagi and pull up some older threads to read. I found this really helpful when I first started. |

Sorry didn't make myself clear. I'm currently using the NuDerm Gentle Cleanser and toner.
Thanks! |

Are you wanting to use the Nu Derm system? If you were just given the Retin A, you aren't doing Nu Derm.
This is the protocol for Nu Derm:
AM: Cleanse, Tone, (C serum if you use this), Clear (1 gram), Exfoderm (1/2 gram), and Sunscreen.
PM: Cleanse, Tone, Clear (1 gram), Blender (1/2-1 gram) mixed with Retin A (1/2-1 gram). That's it. You should not use a moisturizer unless your are really having problems with excessive dryness, and then you would only use it sparingly and for a brief period of time.
If you are wanting to get on Nu Derm you really need to see a derm/esty and get recommendations and the correct regimen for your own skin. |

My face is red and peeling still. But why so many breakouts...what about a little neosporin on the open zits?? I don't wear makeup anymore for what my skin is shedding it wont stay on anyway. I have a job interview next week. I know this is suppose to pass. ohhh and I just discovered red blood splat kinda like bruising or something under my eyes. What is that??? Obagi please be good to me!! |

naomi77, the red blood bruising look sounds like broken caps. The breakouts can last a while and it is all part of the "out with the old" phase. Are you under the care of a derm/esty? I would definitely go see them to get some advice on the breakouts.
As for your job interview, you could always stop the Obagi a week before, and then resume after your interview. |

I am so happy to hear you are under someones care and are going to call them. Sometimes they will have you use other products with the Nu Derm for bad acne breakouts (not all the time, but sometimes). Good luck to you! |

I've been using the whole kit for 4 months now. I know that is supposed to be near the end time. However, I am a member of the "Wise Generation' (better than senior, right!) and have old sun damage around my mouth and chin. I am a faithful, daily sunscreen user, however, live in the sunny, dry, windy southwest. Sooooo, I will be using it longer and am still peeling in those trouble spots for which I am grateful, knowing it is still doing the job. I no longer need to use a moisturizer. And my daughter, who used it long before me and still does the maintenance, never has had to use one again. I'm wondering if it slows the healing process to us moisturizer?
Good luck new users and definitely check in for advice from your health care person.

Gini, I love that, wise generation!
Yes, using a moisturizer slows down the process. With Nu Derm you are taking your skin back to a healthy state, one where it doesn't need a moisturizer (at least not on a daily basis). There are times when you will probably need to moisturize when you go on maintenance, but it will be rare, like when the weather turns especially cold, etc. Good luck. You sound like you are doing great. And, that is the perfect attitude for Nu Derm (to be grateful for the peeling because you know good things are happening)! |
