I always sleep on my right side, and I do notice i have little more fine lines under my right eye than my left one.

my friend told me we should always sleep on our back which will be the best for the face(not only for wrinkles but also we will not wipe all the face cream on the pillow too)

does it really matter? i tried to force myself sleep on my back, and I cannot even fall in sleep.....

Like anything, I think sleep and sleeping position will effect the facial tissue without doubt. Its pretty much a habit you have formed of sleeping on your right side, so it will take time and effort to unlearn that habit and create a new one. Some people find that putting pillows under their knees helps them stop turning. Others have invested in special pillows (savemyface.com I think is one of them). If your creasing your facial tissue into a pillow, then that will help to cause fine lines in the process. Depends how bad you want to sleep on your back ultimately I suppose.

I know they say it matters but I can only sleep on my side as well, I have decided it's a toss up which will age me quicker never sleeping well at all or sleeping on my side? I chose to get a good nights sleep, the only thing I try and do is switch sides some times! Smile

The only other thing that I thought might be interesting, is that I remember an accupuncturist told me one time not to sleep on your left side as it stresses the heart. I don't know the full ins and outs - but its interesting for sure.

That seems odd as I have had friends with pregnancy related high blood pressure and they all were told when lying down and sleeping to do so on the left side as this lowers your blood pressure, I would think that puts a lot less stress on the heart!

I've also heard about this a long time ago but I can't remember the source. Stands to reason though.

I've no idea as to the reasons behind it, just know it was said to me at one point, but if doctors are recommending it to pregnant women, then I would think they would have more authority for sure.

Just found this link:

http://www.netwellness.org/question.cfm/57909.htm

Question:
I saw an article on line concerning sleeping on ones left side being bad for the heart. The article was on WEB MD webpage talked about this. Do you have any information on this? It seems a very strange idea.

Answer:
This is an interesting question about the effects of body position on heart function. I assume you are talking about adults and not children and will address this specifically.

It has been shown that patients with chronic heart failure tend to prefer sleeping on their right side as opposed to their left. Subsequent studies have demonstrated that, indeed, sympathetic nervous system activity is lower in patients with chronic heart failure, or in those who have had a heart attack, when they lie on their right sides versus their left. Sympathetic nervous activity is what controls heart rate and blood pressure and thus, for these patients, lying on the right reduces their heart rate and blood pressure, both of which are good for the heart when faced with these medical conditions. As such, some authorities recommend that patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack not sleep on their left sides. It should be noted, however, that this therapy has not been studied to confirm that it changes other clinical outcomes.

Why lowering of sympathetic nervous system activity happens with changes in position is not entirely clear. Some researchers have suggested that when the right side is down, the heart is in a more superior position, making it easier for it to pump blood out. However, this has not been studied at this time to prove this is the case. Furthermore, whether the effects noted are of any significance to individuals who do not have heart failure or have not had a heart attack is unclear.

Of interest, body position in sleep does affect other conditions. For those with heart burn (gastroesophageal reflux), sleeping with the right side down actually worsens nighttime reflux as compared to sleeping with the left side down. And for those with obstructive sleep apnea, sleeping flat on your back tends to worsen this condition (as opposed to sleeping on your sides).

If you have other specific questions about sleep or other sleep disorders, please visit the American Academy of Sleep Medicine website. In addition to information, the website contains a list of Sleep Centers and Sleep Specialists across the country so that you may locate one near you. The website Sleep Education.com also contains plenty of consumer friendly information about sleep and sleep apnea. Good luck and here's to better sleep!

Maybe things have changed but they don't want you sleeping on your back, and as a woman who has had 4 kids I can tell you it's miserable to attempt to sleep on your back during pregnancy!

In the early trimester pregnant woman can sleep and rest in various positions of any importance can give comfort to the mother. That's a little info for How Good Sleep Position During this pregnancy may be useful for you.

Pregnant women should not have to worry about your baby in the womb feel uncomfortable or dangerous, because it created the mother's body was so unique that can provide protection, is also the fetus in the womb you have never felt uncomfortable because the fetus in the womb floats in amniotic fluid and have their own space to move freely.

Sleeping prone position is safe for pregnant women only, but usually pasa first trimester of pregnancy, the breast enlargement and breast are also more sensitive will cause inconvenience to sleep on his stomach, and stomach at the time where you have started growing (initial 14 weeks) slept with a facedown very uncomfortable because you have to support the thigh with a pillow to sleep on his stomach because stomach began to grow. From a survey of pregnant women who slept prone position before 16 weeks of 1% but after more than 16 weeks to 0%.

Sleeping with the supine position, is recommended after 16 weeks of pregnancy pregnant women to not sleep on their backs, because sleeping on their backs with laying the whole weight of your uterus to the back, intestines, and the inferior vena cava. Supine position to sleep can also increase the risk of back pain, hemorrhoids, and indigestion, and disturb breathing and circulation. Back sleeping position to the second trimester and three can also affect blood pressure. For some women, causes a decrease in blood pressure that makes them feel dizzy, to the other, even increase blood pressure. In the case of pregnancy with high blood pressure with their backs to sleep is NOT recommended.

Actually how sleeping position is best?

No further research on safe sleeping positions for pregnant women, but highly recommended after 16 weeks of pregnancy, pregnant women should sleep on his side to the left side, because this position gives advantage for your baby to get the blood flow and nutrients to the maximum the placenta because of the large vein (vena cava) in the back of the right spine of the return of blood from the lower body to the heart. Also can help the kidneys to get rid of the remaining products and fluids from the mother's body, thereby reducing swelling in the feet, legs and hands pegelangan.

Sleeping position to the right side, is also good, you can change the position of right-leaning to the left to make you sleep more comfortably.

If you woke up that night and find you sleeping on your back, do not worry, you do not do --- who seseuatu harm your baby. Restore it to the side. Moreover, in pregnancy, where the stomach was enlarged, along with other conditions such as cramps, frequent urination, false contractions, your baby is kicking the stomach, a sense of increased stomach acid that will cause the mother would wake up several times at night so the mother will surely change sleeping position several times, and therefore is not so automatic sleep on their backs.

Tip: To sleep with his side a more comfortable place the pillow between your knee and one dipunggung you. Or you can buy special pillows for pregnant women.

Many pregnant women who have to sleep with a confused position that how? And whether the baby safe and comfortable? Actual position of the bed do the best during pregnancy?
At the beginning of three semester of the pregnancy, pregnant women can rest and sleep with any of the various positions can be important to provide a sense of comfort the mother.
Pregnant women should not need to worry, that the baby in your womb does not feel comfortable or dangerous, because the mother’s body has been created uniquely, so that it can provide protection, the fetus in the mother womb does not ever feel comfortable because fetus in the womb soar in fetal fluids and have their own space to move freely.

sleeping position for pregnant women
Sleep with the prone position
Safe only for pregnant women but usually in first trimester of pregnancy, the breast enlargement and breast that are also more sensitive, will cause inconvenience to sleep prone, and when your stomach is already starting up (14 weeks early) sleep with the prone position to be very uncomfortable because you must endorse the thigh pad to be able to stomach sleeping prone because the start up. From a survey of pregnant women sleeping with the prone position before 16 weeks, but 1% more after 16 weeks become 0%.
Recumbent sleep position
Recommended after 16 weeks of pregnancy pregnant women not to recumbent sleep, because sleeping with a recumbent position laying all your weight to the back of the uterus, bowel, and the inferior vena Cava. Recumbent sleeping position also may increase the risk of lumbago, hemorrhoids, and digestive disturbances, and disrupt breathing and circulation. Recumbent position to sleep in the second and third of three semester and three can also affect blood pressure. For some women, causing a decrease in blood pressure that makes them feel dizzy, to the other, even increase blood pressure. In the case of pregnancy with high blood pressure to sleep with the recumbent position is NOT recommended.
In fact, which position is the best sleep position for pregnant women?
No further research on a safe sleeping position for pregnant women, but are highly recommended after 16 weeks of pregnancy, pregnant women should sleep with sloping position to the left side because this position gives advantage for your baby to get the maximum flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta because of the large vena (inferior vena Cava) on the back of the right side of the spinal return blood from the body to the bottom of the heart. Can also help to remove the kidney and the remaining product fluid from the body of the mother reduce the swelling of the feet, hands and ankle.
sleep with sloping position to the right, is also good, you can change the position of right-sloping left to make your sleeping more comfortable.
If you awakened the night and find you sleeping recumbent, do not worry, you do not do something that you hurt your baby. Only to return to the slanting position. Further information on pregnancy, where the stomach is up, along with other conditions such as cramps, urinating often, false contraction, the baby is kicking your stomach, a sense of increased stomach acid that causes the mother will be awakened several times at night so the mother will have changed sleeping position several times and therefore so does not automatically sleep with recumbent position.
Tips: To bed with a more comfortable sloping position, put a cushion between the knee and one on your back. Or you can buy a special pillow for pregnant women.

Sure I don't think anyone pregnant should be thinking about sleeping on theirs backs for both their sake and their babies, but its interesting what you said previously about them being told to sleep on left side, as the article I found seems to suggest thats its better to sleep on right side. Ultimately if someone is pregnant, I'm sure their sleeping position would be last thing on their mind, but if your not pregnant, its something that I think could be changed with effort.

Sean I am going on what I know was recommended to women with preeclampsia, and if you were ever pregnant you would know sleeping can be quite a challenge!
I know no matter how I try I can't sleep on my back just no way! I am sure it's best to avoid wrinkles but I still prefer some sleep!

I’m not recommending pregnant women sleep on their back?

The original poster was asking [Quote:] "does it really matter? i tried to force myself sleep on my back, and I cannot even fall in sleep....."

I’m also not criticizing anyone for not sleeping on their back? It’s a free world and people can choose to sleep however they want to. I've already suggested a pillow people can use for their faces which is supposed to help if they did want to sleep on their sides.

Sean,

My youngest is about to be 21 and the oldest is 29 so it's not just about being pregnant, the reason for sleeping on the left with preeclampsia is because that condition includes high blood pressure and it is recommended to stay on the left side if that issue arises! It seems there is a contrary opinion about which side lowers blood pressure!
I know about the pillow you recommended and it's a great option as some of us can't sleep on our backs!

Nothing to do with pregnancy:

To make it even better – Add comfort and reduce stress on the hips by putting a pillow between your knees. Use a pillow of moderate height to support the head. Try a water pillow that can be easily adjusted. If there is room, stretch arms out front. If you have high blood pressure, try sleeping on the left side. If you are prone to kidney stones on one side, side-sleep on the other side.

If my face is anything to go by, yes it does matter. I sleep mostly on my right side and that's the side of my face sagging the most. I've tried sleeping on my left side and on my back, but it doesn't take long for me to end up on my right side.

I try to sleep on my back and most nights I'm successful. I sleep on silk-skin which helps retain moisture in your skin too, apparently.

Yep, I agree. I am a left side sleeper and that is my worst side and the one with the most sagging.

Riley and Skippie,

You 2 have me worrying now, I wake up with little creases on my left cheek but they bounce back to normal after I am up and getting coffee, but now I am wondering if they will decide to stay around permanently some day soon!

I've slept on my left side most of my life. I've only tried hard to be on my back the past year. I've adjusted I'd say about 80% of the time. Because I slept on the left for so long, my nose goes a bit to the right. No one notices unless I tell them, then they see it. If I tilt my head back to show my septum, one can see it curves to the right side too! I don't want to get into the habit of sleeping on the right to put my nose inline, cause then that's another hard habit to break!
