just several years ago, a bottle of cream set the price higher than 100$, it was like rare and expensive.
these days, around 100$ is like a normal price for lots of cream or serum or lotions.
I never understand why the prices are so expensive.
for example, like la mer, i mean seriously, it contains seaweed consentration....seaweed....3$ i can buy like 500g of it in a chinese market..... |

Some are definitely over priced and not worth the $. La Mer is one of them IMO. |

The price is frequently not based directly on the cost of the ingredients, but on what people will pay. Oftentimes we are "funding" rather large advertising budgets of these companies.
Also, some of these companies are doing a lot of research into new ingredients and combinations, so that cost is built into the products they sell. |

Yep, majority of it goes to marketing and advertising. |

I don't get it either...why are facial creams more $$$ than body creams? Its all hype, although some facial creams do a great job at repairing skin damage, none of them can bring back that youthfulness we desire! And we all pay big bucks to find that fountain of youth! I'm a true believer of what you are on the inside reflects on the outside, and no cream or serum can replace a healthy lifestyle! |

Marketing and packaging.
However, there are many large manufacturing companies that make both high and low end products just to cover a larger demographic. In some instances the cheaper product has exactly the same ingredients as the more expensive product.
The marketing executives are well aware of the fact that some people will not be satisfied with a product unless they're paying top dollar for it. There's an element of snobbery involved where some people are only interested in purchasing prestige brands and buying into the concept of luxury. |

For the extremely high end ones, it is for the research but does not mean that they discovered anything new, but try to, the quality and concentration of ingredients, packaging and marketing. |

I think this sums up what we pay for 99.9% of the time more than anything else, if we buy into those high end lines at all!
IMHO
