While surfing the internet, i accidentally landed on cosmeticcop.com. I was very impressed at first, Paula seems to be very sincere and knowlegable. After checking her product previews, I was left with mixed feelings of being so confused, depressed and quite... stupid. All of my favorite skin cares and cosmetics failed her tests. I felt like an idiot who wasted my money on "never even worth to be out in the market" faves all these years. And then, when I asked my friends who Paula was, nobody seemed to know. I was also wondering how Paula could find time to try and test a thousand plus products to come down with her results and in her opinion most of them were pretty bad except for her own line ( she had no preview of any !!!?). I was also wondering what a mess her skin would become ( sorry!) after testing all those gimmicks personally. I got out of her website as fast as I could and promise myself never come back. My conclusion: I will only follow my own heart and listen only to my Derma Doc who knows my skin since my first zits, my facialist who takes care of my skin year after year, and you guys ( of course). And if I ever make a mistake I'll gladly learn from it in the comfort of my...own skin! :0) |

Paula analyzes products through their ingredients. I do not think she will use her own face as a lad field. She never believes a product contains 100% natural extracts. Most products on ED are made of essential oil or marine extracts. That's why you found your favorite products failed her test. |

Me too, i was very upset a few months ago after i read the products review from cosmeticop by Paula. Most of my skin care products failed too in her reviews. She fails a product immediately if it contains mineral oil, where she think it will clog pores.
But i went towww.dermadoctors. There is an article written by the dermalogist, that mineral oil does not neccessary clog pores, it really depends on the percent used. As long as mineral oil is not of the the top few ingredients listed in the ingredient list, it would be save to use and not clog pores. |

Paula Begoun. She is a former make-up artist, critic, who has several books out "Don't Go to The Cosmetics Counter Without Me" (several volumes). Some of her advice, I agree with. Some, not-so. Form your own opinions on products, colours, etc. |

I read one of her "don't go to the hair / cosmetic counter without me" books and tried some of her suggestions. My face still broke out and you know what, it wasn't really all that much cheaper in the long run. I got my face under control using products she said were "over priced and hyped up" for what they did. But dang it all, they worked and her recs didn't do a thing for me! Her hair comments drive me buggy. As a naturally curly head she recommends silicone as a must. Silicone dires my hair to frizzies but you can't tell Paula that (people have tried). Funny thing is, she now has her own line of products based on what she believes works so skeptic that I am, I wonder how much of her reviews are actually salespitches for her own products ... Bottom line, you can learn from her books, they are interesting and have a lot of good info., and her ideas are worth a try, but sometimes what shouldn't work at all works great. So if it works for you, go for it |

I agree, some are good and some are bad advice. But she even admits that. |

You have to take what Paula says with a grain of salt. If it does not irritate and it works for you and your skin is happy stick with it. |

If you REALLY want the low down on skin care products and the INDUSTRY, get Paula's Beauty Bible, 2nd edition. This is such an eye opener. It changed how I purchase skincare and cosmetics,by looking with a critical eye. Money very well spent by having this valuble book at your finger tips. |

First, let me say that i agree with SuzieQ that you should educate yourself on what ingredients are & what they do before you buy any product, but I found something very interesting. I went to Paula's website (never been there before), and read some of her reviews. Does she like ANYTHING?
According to her, there is not one skin care line out there that is worth buying. Either she says the ingredients are terrible for you, or that the prices are too expensive for what you are getting. (which to be honest, I do agree with the latter statement in many cases, especially with certain "department store" brands), but anyway, back to my point. I thought "Wow, this lady just hates everything about the skincare industry", then my eye caught a link to the left of the page that says "Shop Paula's Products".
Now I get it. She has her own line of skin care products. Which, I have nothing against (obviously). But I found it funny how if you go by her reviews, there is no other line out there (besides hers of course) that is on the whole, good. Almost all of the reviews are bad, with a few "This product is OK, but..." reviews sprinkled in for flavor.
Take what she says with a grain of salt. Like Terihe said, use what works for you! I have a certain philosophy that I subscribe to also, but that doesn't mean that I think every other line out there is crap. There are a lot of other great products out there - that suit the specific skincare needs of different people.
I think she gives some good information, as a guideline for choosing products, but remember, it is just one person's opinion.

I also agree that you should educate yourself on ingredients and their benefits/disadvantages...Just from this site alone I have learned so much. (like a mini-online esthetics course!) I love when our resident experts come on and give us the skinny on products we may be jonesing to try or wanting to know what this or that ingredient will do...
Now, on to Paula.....I'd like to know who made her the end all be all in the cosmetics industry. It is such a personal choice! If you look at the EDS forum members for example - how many raves have you read, tried the product being raved about only to find it didn't work for you? Conversely, you might see a product here massacred for being crap and you're scratching your head going - "wait a minute, that product worked great for me!" I agree she makes sense on many things and does have some good tips and advice, but I think the real investigating comes from us, the consumer....we ultimately find what works or doesnt' for us and I really don't feel the need to "consult" with Paula. But that's just me. However, I will always ask you guys what you think!!! lol!!!
Ooooh, I must be crabby today, look at me going on about poor Paula...I'm going to go eat some m&m's to get me in a better mood!

I have her latest edition of "Dont go to the cosmetic counter without me" and honestly, i would rather get her opinions as shes more than an expert than myself. Some people don't have sensitive skin ..or lots of money to spend and find out a product is trash for themselves. I'm only 20 so i want to get my money's worth..and know it would cause my skin any irritation. She is overly skeptical for a reason..to give people her brutal honest opinion. and if someone doesn't like it, they don't need to follow up on her opinions. But anything she's given good reviews on for sensitive skin has worked lovely on me. Also, i cannot live without the ingredient dictionary! Someone said she bashes all lines...she might bash certain products (sometimes all..but they might be a horrible brand), but she gives good reviews as well. I certainly agree when she gets ticked that lines put alcohol as one of the first ingredients..or something that definitely shouldnt be there, but is. |

I looked at the ingredients for Paula's own line of products. Even at those prices, they are not very impressive. THey are still filled with parabens and petrolchemicals.
Perhaps those products will work for many people well, and won't for others. It's the same with any high or low end range. You really have to just try it for yourself to see. |

Mineral oil is not all bad. In fact, assuming both bottles in question contain .05% tretinoin, it alone marks the distinction between Retin-A & Renova. As of yet, there have been no studies comparing the two products' efficacy for acne. This would explain why insurance very rarely covers Renova under any circumstances ... |
