I had been using the simple vitamin C serum for about a week when I experienced a nasty breakout on my cheek... I haven't changed anything else in my skincare regimen and I haven't had a break out in months... Granted I have been under a lot of stress at work, but I am afraid it was the serum so I stopped using it. Sad

I was really disappointed because I really was hoping to have better results from the C serum... Has anyone else experienced a breakout from using the serum?

BTW - I was using the recipe that calls for glycerin, ascorbic acid, and distilled water only...

It seems aside from stress which can definitely be a contributing factor, many things that are good in the long run can cause breakouts initially for some. A few examples aside from the C serum are OCM and Retin A! Your skin just may need time to acclimate to a change. Just a thought? Smile

If you aren't going to make a full on C serum, you might be better off just mixing the appropriate amount of C crystals/powder with distilled water daily, right in the palm of your hand, and applying it that way.

The glycerin is probably the culprit in your case. Also be aware that without another antioxidant or two in there, it will reach the 2nd stage of oxidation in a matter of days. (1st stage of oxidation is when it is added to water, 2nd stage is when it starts to discolor and turn yellow!)

If you try my suggestion above, and follow the application with a few drops of vitamin E oil, you will have a much more effective 'C' experience.

Darkmoon - This is only anecdotal, but I also experienced a breakout after using glycerin.

Maybe the glycerin itself doesn't cause the breakout, but the moistness might encourage bacteria, etc? Jut a thought.

I agree that you will find much conflicting information, but glycerin is known to be antibacterial and glycerin soap is highly recommended for people with acne. We do know that what is great for some may be problematic for others!

I was wondering if any of you have had success using the vitamin c base of l-ascorbic acid and distilled water with some cream/lotion that you have on hand that might have hyalauric acid, various peptides - antioxidant cream - are there are ingredients that would counter act the effectiveness of the c base? I have so many bottles of half used anti aging creams which are just sitting there. Thanks, Lynn
