maybe your moisturizer is too much for your skin. It could also be that your cleanser is too strong and is stripping away the natural oils and then your skin compensates by becoming super oily!
Or your skin is bi-polar..
or maybe farouk is right and you ARE an alien |

I can see I am getting alot of help here! LOL
I know a few others who's skin is like this and that is why Erno Laszlo's theory makes sense. He determines oily, normal, dry skin depending on what time it is and what your skin is like. |

If it's any comfort, mine's the opposite - starts off really radiant every morning, becomes dry and dehydrated by mid day.
What a chore, this skin of mine
Help, anyone???

not a very helpful reply from a soon to be Dr! You are really gonna have to improve your bedside manner
Sassy, I think Lianne may have a point (about the cleanser). You could be overdoing it with the old exfoliation too. Try laying off for a couple of weeks and see whatr happens. Could also be hormonal?
Jenny, are you getting enough fluids? maybe working in air-con? you could try a moisture spray perhaps?

hi
it isn't my cleanser as it is my oatmeal bar and that is not drying/stripping and I don't exfoliate daily but thinking I should, it might help. My face has always been this way and obviously there is something to it or Erno L wouldn't have a clocking system.
Today I used my Alpha Hydrox after cleansing and it seemed a bit better so maybe I NEED an AHA. |

I find the more I exfoliated my skin got more oily! I guess it was my skins way of saying "produce more oil...you are drying me out."
Now I only exfoliate gently once a week. |

Hi Guapagirl
Yes I work in an aircon environment and I behave like a camel - hardly drink anything - max 3 cups of fluids a day.
I know I should be drinking more, but I am a really small camel and have quite a small capacity
Your suggestion of a moisture spray sounds good - any suggestion of what to get?
Yeah! It's Friday!!

Hi Jenny
I love the skincircuit molecular mist, but it is a tad pricey. Jane Iredale do a couple which have had good reviews or you could just make your own with flower water (rose is good for dry skin) and some grapeseed oil (as it's pretty lightweight) and maybe some essential oil. You could add some hyaluronic acid as well. May take some trial and error to get the proportions right!

I'm a little confused...what does EL clocking system have to do with the time of day? I used to be on Laszlo and their 'clock' was just a way of labeling your skin type' i.e. 9:00 is the driest skin and 3:00 is the oiliest skin type. I was 1:00 which was slightly oily and 1:30 in the summer-2:00 regimen was too drying.
Anyway, I have a similar problem in the winter-you need to lighten up on the cleanser-I still have to blot midday (dosen't everone?) but I don't start out dehydrated anymore. |

hi marina,
my understanding was the timing had to do with when your oil production started and I always seem to *hydrate* around 10:30-11am. I might be saying it wrong or understanding it wrong.
jenny - tiptoncharles.com has some face sprays I use Sandalwood on ocassion. |

What are the characteristics of your skin when you don't apply anything? Before washing? Immediately after? 2-3 hours later? 8 hours later? What are you putting on your face?
It is completely expected that the skin returns to normal sebum secretion rapidly after defatting as soon as it can--this usually takes 2-3 hours, maybe less in a younger person and maybe more in an older person. The final sebum output is the same as the pre-degreasing sebum output.
The only ways I know of that allow you to significantly decrease your skin's sebum output on a more permanent basis are prescription drugs (accutane, anti-androgens), things that ought to be prescription drugs (very high doses of vitamin A) and starvation. If you wish to increase your skin's sebum output, try a few grams of high potency pharmaceutical grade fish oil every day. Fulton says sebum is a useless relic and Kligman says also says sebum is quite useless. I am not sure they are exactly correct because high sebum output might provide a modest SPF, maybe 2 or so. |

I take Udo's oil everyday which has Omega 3-6-9. I do know that diet can play a role in my skin hydration. |

It is probably the 3 that makes the biggest difference. The 6 and 9 are easy to get too much of in a standard diet.
It is estimated that only about 10% of one's short chain omega3 intake is converted to EPA/DHA.
I have noticed big differences between the choices of taking in extra short chain omega3 (flax) and extra long chain omega3 (the fish oil).
Extra flax (to 6 g of ALA per day) makes my skin velvety, prettier.
Fish oil (2 g per day, including 1.2 g EPA+DHA) turns me into a greasy, disgusting mess. I can smell the fishy smell coming out of my pores. Sorry for being graphic.
I suspect this will be different for everyone based on background diet and genetics.
It is very possible to have high sebum output and high trans evaporative water loss (TEWL). This has been shown in a few studies. On the other hand, children, who produce no sebum, have usually adequately hydrated skins. So there is some question as to how much sebum really matters and how "moisturizing" it really is. Many experts think "not very." |
