NOTE: I posted this question on my HQ 2% thread, but feel I should start a thread on this topic since it's not really a HQ question.
I have a quick question about the active ingredients on this product. In addition to 2% HQ, it also has 2% Octinoxate for sunscreen, but that's the only sunscreen chemical listed. Can Octinozate work by itself? Is 2% enough for protection? I still apply another sunscreen on top but just wondering about the effectiveness of only Octinoxate 2% in case I forgot to apply sunscreen on top. Is this the chemical that deteriorates in the sun? (What's that term called when the chemical breaks down in the sun?) |

Octinoxate works well with other sunscreen ingredients. Very commonly it is in with zinc oxide.
Octinoxate on its own is not photstable; meaning it will break down in the sun after a couple of hours. The UVA protection in octinoxate is quite low at 2%. My Olay Complete spf 15 (original)is photostable due to the zinc oxide. It is low UVA protection (ok for winter) with 6% ZO & 3% octinoxate.
You mentioned that you want to apply another sunscreen on top.
Avobenzone (parsol 1789) does not mix well with octinoxate and creates an unstable SS.
What sunscreen did you have in mind? What are the actives? |
