Does anyone know if there is a way to neutralize the smell of tea tree oil? I would like to use it but I find the smell to be much too strong for me.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks |

What are you planning to use it for? If it's straight that is just the odor it has, I find it dissipates rather quickly. |

You could create a mixture with other oils. If you're putting it on your skin, I like to mix with lavendar essential oil, which smells much better (and its calming too!). It won't completely neutralize the tea tree smell, but it will change it a bit and you'll have the great lavendar smell with it. I've also mixed with Ylang Ylang oil and lemon oil with good success. All of these are good for the skin too. |

I personally have no problem with the smell but my partner can't stand anything that smells medicinal. As mentioned, you could mix it with some other strong smelling scents that you like or try to love the smell. I usually try to love things that benefit me or at least tolerate it...lol. |

I think it should be noted that the only 2 essential oils that should ever be applied "neat" are Tea Tree and Lavender. Many are sensitive to Lavender so a patch test is a good idea. Essential oils should always be diluted in a carrier oil. |

I've mixed tea tree with aloe gel. Works nicely on acne, but you still have the smell. In fact, one of my sons refuses to use it because of the smell. So if anyone finds a way to neutralize or minimize it, I'm interested too! |

Thanks for the replies!
Lavender is an essential oil I have considered getting, as it is used in a number of recipes, but I hesitate because I'm not sure if I will be able to stand the smell of that either. Any kind of strong smells can be too much for me |

I can relate but for me it's any synthetic fragrances that set me off, eyes tear, nose gets itchy and runs ect. |

I just recently read that tea tree oil can be substituted with Niaouli essential oil. It is related to tea tree and has similar properties, but isn't as smelly.
I'm kinda getting *used* to the smell, though I still don't like it. I find that if I put it on and then later apply lotion on top the smell isn't as intense. I do wonder, though, if this is a good method or not? The lotion I am using is a simple moisturizer - no BHA or AHA or anything like that. This should be okay... right? |
