Hi All,
I just posted on a product called MEG 21, after reading into their studies and checking to see if anyone had written about it on this forum. It claims to prevent glycation through the use of arginine (an AGE -Advanced End-product of Glycation suppressor) and N-Methyl-D-Glucamine (which inhibits the skin-aging effects of glycation. This halting of glycation (and presumed reversal to some degree) was apparently discovered during the company's diabetes research. The creds of the scientists involved at Fox Chase Cancer Centre in Philly seem impressive too. They have done a double blind clinical trial financed by the manufacturer. The results look impressive and were taken under the same lighting conditions, angles, etc. They claim increased elasticity and crepiness of the skin. Here's the link. There is too much detail to rework here. http://www.middle-ageless.com/2010/04/glycation-and-aging-skin-part-2-meg-21.html |

Antonia,
Thanks for posting this! Although I'm not middle-ageless just yet, I still really enjoy reading your blog and you are just lovely.
Have you tried the MEG cream yet? I'm definitely keeping my eyes out for a good cream that helps build elastin in my skin (hahaha, if possible!!!).

Hi Av,
I started using it today and will post on my experience after four weeks. It makes scientific sense, and the images are quite impressive. That said, only time will tell. Someone said the product is available on Amazon, so I am assuming that it is a third party site such as a spa. |

Hello Antonia,
Are you referring to the in-house trial or did they actually publish something on a journal?
Do you have a reference, link, for this study?
Thanks! |

Josee, although the trial was double blind and randomized, I don't believe it was peer reviewed per se. It did appear in the Sept. 2008 edition of Cosmetic Dermatology but this is not the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology as far as I can see. The trial was carried out by Francis Kappler, PhD (Chief Scientific Officer Dynamis Therapeutics), Charles R. Zerweck, PhD, (director of clinical studies cyberDERM), Gary L. Grove, PhD (VP cyberDERM)and Annette Tobia (CEO cyberDERM). Drs Kappler and Tobia are stockholders for Dynamis Therapeutics and holders of the patent for supplamine.
Trial carried out by Dermac Laboratory (better known for Touch of Mink I believe...) CyberDERM manufactures instruments for measuring skin changes. There is an interesting article on the product and its engineers in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Whether or not it works for me remains to be seen. I was impressed with the presentation they sent me, which is more than I can say for most of the stuff I get from skincare companies.
I just wish there were some reviews on the product. It appears to have been "out there" for a couple of years. I think I may add my carnosine to it for a double shot of anti-glycation action. |

I tried the MEG 21 a few years back. Unfortunately (though not surprisingly for me!) I did not see any change in my skin. Good luck with it, Antonia. Keep us posted on how you do with it! |

Interesting, Rileygirl. I think they must be having some kind of PR thrust because glycation and AGEs are the big buzzwords in skincare these days. I suspect that, once again, prevention is the best strategy. Cut back on sugars, stay out of the sun, take your carnosine, and apply it to the outside too. |

You are probably right! I "believe" MEG 21 was originally marketed for diabetics. But, I was impressed with the pictures, so I had to try it!!
BTW, I love your blog and read it regularly. |

Avalange, I take 500mg in the morning and the same at night. I also add carnosine powder (not that in capsules as there are other subtances in there) to my skin creams. I take it with food as it is an amino. |

I have been reading the entries on this forum for at least 6 months. For the past 6 weeks, I have been using the Meg 21 eye treatment. After 2 weeks I added the Meg 21 cream that is for the body but I use it on my face. The results have blown me away. I have extremely dry skin so the first thing I noticed was that my area finally looked and felt moisturized. The second thing I noticed was after one week, the crows feet around my eyes were less pronounced. They have continued to diminish as time goes by. My eye area is my greatest concern.
I had hoped that it would help with the nasolabial lines or forehead lines as well but no such luck. I also added a facial serum from Xeridian that also targets glycation. With this I have seen some improvement with the nasolabial lines. They are not as deep. I had some discoloration on one side that has also improved.
Lastly, I did add several supplements- alpha lipoic acid, benfotiamine, and L carnitine or
carnosine. I hope this is helpful! |

I don't know how I missed this MEG 21 until just recently. I certainly can't comment on how it works for me since I have used it for only two days, but the supplements you are taking, Erin, should certainly help glycation in the skin, especially the carnosine and benfotiamine. Could you please explain why you use the body cream on your face? Do you prefer the texture? |

According to what I read about Meg 21, the cream is for the upper chest or other areas of the body that appear aged. I found a couple of reviews from users on other skin care boards who said they used it on their face. It is supposedly stronger than the eye treatment.
Both products are more expensive than the amount I usually spend in regards to skin care. But as I mentioned earlier, I have actually seen results. It's like you start seeing your "younger" self again. The crow's feet are now fine lines instead of wrinkles. And I no longer look all dried out at the end of the day. |

An update.... I have been using the MEG on my arms now for a few months and have seen no difference at all to the structure of the skin on my arms. It still looks like something frm Night of the Living Dead. |

Oh Lord! I didn't realize that would show up as dots. It wasn't anything vulgar, just the name for the blue pill for men. The post was about the proposed pink one for women |

I am guessing here but I think due to spam in the past if you type the V word it automatically dots out the brand name. |

So I am using up my Let's Make Collagen and then concocting my own cream from various actives. I use the AALS every night and eat all the right stuff and exercise like a fiend. I also dry brush them. I am not going to give up but I don't think any cream currently in existence is going to help. Grr! |
