I always use a high-factor, zinc-based sunscreen when on holiday, or when I know that I'm going to be outside for most of the day.
But for those days when I'm just going to work, sitting in an office, then going home, I really would prefer something lighter.
I've been experimenting with using Aquaeous Calamine cream (not the watery lotion) with a dusting of mineral powder on top. (I use retin-A at night.)
The ingredients of Aquaeous Calamine cream are:
Calamine BP 4% w/w, Zinc Oxide BP 3% w/w, Emulsifying Wax (includes Cetostearyl Alcohol and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate), Arachis Oil (peanut oil), Purified Water
It's less than £2 for 100ml., which is nice. And it's also very light on the skin, yet the mineral make-up stays put all day.
I was wondering whether the aquaeous calamine cream might have some sunscreening properties. Calamine is apparently zinc oxide plus a small amount of iron oxide (according to wikipedia). The cream contains 4% calamine, and 3% zinc oxide, so there's a total of about 7% zinc. Is that enough for some sun protection on office-based days? |
