Hi
Someone told me recently that animal products and animal by-products in cosmetics can be really harmful does anyone have an opinion on this? or can anyone give me any tips to find where i can research this further?

Hi Claire,
What animal products are you interested in? Lanolin is one by-product of sheep which unless there is an allergy to wool is an excellent and healing product for the skin.  I would say just like anything there are good and bad animal by-products and it is also likely to be individual just as with plant based actives, oils ect. there are people with sensitivities to just about anything. |

Dark Moon is right--you can't generalize about animal-derived products and potential for harm. No matter what a product's source is--animal, plant, or artificial compound--it has to bee assessed on its own merits. Some may pose a generic risk to all, some may pose a problem only for those with personal sensitivity, and some may be harmless to almost anyone.
Of course, if you are vegan you will want to avoid animal-derived products whether harmful or not. In the skincare and makeup context, that means avoiding lanolin, honey, beeswax, lactic acid (from milk, carmine coloring (from beetles), and lots more I'm not thinking about. |

| I agree. it totally depends on the animal product. I don't think any can be harmless to your skin, though some just aren't very nice. For example, many natural colours are made from crushed sea animal shells, while glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate (new in skincare) in made from shark cartilage or egg shells. Lanolin, from sheeps wool, is one of the most natural skin softening ingredients (though some people can be allergic to it). |

I am kind of grossed out by Placenta in skincare. Esp if i do not know where it comes from?
A lot of Japanese stuff contains placenta- I used to like DHC skincare, but most of their things have placenta.
I know some coca cola drinks have carmine in them..like fruitopia 
I do not want to drinkstuff with dye from crushed bugs.
I do not eat a lot of meat. so could be why? |

Placenta grosses me out too!
For some reason I cannot bare to put (leave) emu oil on my skin either! I've tried multiple brands and multiple times but it just grosses me out (I actually feel physically ill when it's on my skin and have to wash it off almost immediately). It's odd because I'm not a vegetarian and have even eaten emu meat on a number of occasions! |

I'm just the opposite, a vegetarian, but I love emu oil. I guess we all have our quirks  |
