Hi,
I used Clarin's self tanner on my face and when I use my toner I see the color coming off on my cotton ball... What's up with that? I wasn't wearing any makeup. I'm a natural redhead and the Clarins doesn't break my face out into freckles but produces a gentle tan. I admit this is pretty silly as I use Retin-A at night, but in the summer, I've grown tired of makeup. Please be gentle as I know this is such a stupid post... |

I use Clarins self-tanner, but I don't use toner anyway. Do you think you'd be happy to do without it, perhaps, and go toner-free? |

For you ladies that wear self-tanner on your face, do you also put foundation on after?
I have never used a self-tanner on my face, only on my body, and I am a bit hesitant to do it. I am thinking of trying it on a Friday evening, this way if it looks weird, I have until Monday (work day) for it to fade a bit.
My worst face tanning experience was back in 1982 with Coppertone. It made me orange and around the outside of my mouth was a white ring all around. I am sure face self-tanners have come a long way since. |

Ok, I won't use toner. I'm about to run out anyhow.
I don't use foundation when I use the self-tanner. I apply a small amount of bronzer powder in a three shape starting by eyebrows as shown to be my the Nars rep at Nordstroms. Pretty soon maybe I will have the nerve to go without everything, including concealer. I have dark circles, but I am using a bit of EL Doublewear around the eye area including lids.
That is funny you had a white ring around your mouth. I think technology has changed. |

Eek! @ your Coppertone experience! As catloveschanel pointed out, things have definitely moved on since then - thank goodness!
I'd advise you to try a very natural-looking, fairly light one at first. I use, and swear by, Clarins Liquid Bronze. It works well, even on my pale skin, and is incredibly easy to use and apply. If you want a darker tone, you could always put on one layer, wait a little while, then put on another. But I'd advise you to try one layer first, to make sure you like it and to see how it looks on you.
As for foundation, sometimes I don't bother with it when I have fake tan on my face - I just apply a little powder and concealer where necessary. Otherwise, I use a very light, spray foundation (SK-II - which has, sadly, been discontinued now) over the top. |

Try just giving your face a really good rinse after cleansing. I actually use a microfibre cloth after cleansing and leaves my face feeling really fresh and clean, but doesn't seem to lift off my fake tan.
If you miss the feel of using toner, try using warm (not hot) water when you rinse your face, then splash on some nice, refreshing cool water to finish off and close the pores. I do this and love it! |

I actually had a bad expperience with that brand and the product they had that has 2 pumps on it-not sure if that still exists thesedays.
The grocery store (loblaws, a big chain) they sold me a expired self tanner and it did n ot work at all and rinsed off in the shower totally.
the store being sneaky they had put a big sticker over the expiry date and I did not bother to look under it that time (usually I do bother).
Maybe this is more the grocery store's fault I think.
I actually used to use the Yves Rocher body self tanner gel on my face- no prolems ever with that item.
and it smells like Nars monoi stuff too.
But now Yves rocher they have added some sparkles to the formula and you look way too shimmery when you apply, but the sparkles rinse off at least!
Now I think I will put some self tanner on my legs this week, my skin looks so blotchy after having some allergies to something, it's taken my skin 2 years to recover from that. |

Thanks for the info. Majorb and OttawaShopper.
I think I will try Clarins. I remember a friend using Clarins self-tanner about 15 years ago and Clarins had great reviews on it even then!
I see they have one called "Clarins Liquid Bronze Self Tanning for Face and Décolleté." Is this the one I should try? I have very fair skin (blue eyes, blonde hair), so I guess I should try something light? |

Mysty - I used the Clarins Mousse Exquise Delectable Self Tanning Mousse - see because it's written in French it automatically makes it better! I got it in the Sephora Summer Sunscreen Sampler for $24, you get all these little samples including this fabulous FX primer which is just like Chanel Base. Who wants to wear primer in summer though? Not I. I have fair skin, redhead, now strawberry blonde, freckle prone. This doesn't make freckles on my face unlike the Jergens Face Stuff or Loreal.
I used the Jergens on my legs and it makes many freckles, but it dries right away.
Thanks for the tips on the toner substitutes. It's so funny that I did all this work to lighten up my freckles, (age spots) and exfoliation and now I'm self tanning. It's just kind of ironic. |

You're very welcome.
That's exactly the same stuff I use, MystyPines. It's great for pale skin. |

For me, the best tanner I've ever used is Idol Tan by Idol Beauty - smells like some citrus fruit and makes a really nice darker color. I have two unpacked Idol Tan lotions. I always make sure I have them at home just for like the first aid if needed but this season I'm not gonna need them anymore as I got tanned naturally on vacation with my boyfriend and summer is practically almost here anyway.
If someone happens to want it, can have that 4 free. We can meet at a coffee shop or I can ship that to you and you'll just pay a few bucks for shipping.
