I've been taking DIM supplement for my hormonal acne and it's working well. I hardly get zits during my period. Lately I've been reading in MUA that vitamin d3 works for hormonal acne too. It's cheaper than DIM, hence Im considering a switch. Can anyone comment on the efficacy of vitamin d3?
Thanks |

Vit D deficiency can cause lots of issues so it can be helpful if you are deficient. Its good to have your levels tested first though. |

I was Vit D deficient and I take VitD3 daily. I didn't noticed any changes in my hormonal breakouts at all though.
I take it just a mood enhancer! |

Sorry, off topic here, but do you take just the D3, meaning no calcium or anything else added? I have been checking out the supplement, but I see a lot of calcium and D and not sure if that is required or not! |

I believe the main reason you are seeing the combination is Vitamin D's role in Calcium absorption.
http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamind.asp
Vitamin D is essential for promoting calcium absorption in the gut and maintaining adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bone and prevent hypocalcemic tetany. It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts [3,4,5]. Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Vitamin D sufficiency prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults [2,6,7]. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from osteoporosis. |

Off topic here, too, but my skin always seems to clear up during my period until 2-3 weeks before it, then I start getting mild break outs until my next period. Since I just came off the pill I skip a few here and there, and that leaves my skin in horrible condition. It's like it's waiting for my next period
When people say hormonal acne, do they usually mean during their period? |

@Penta: Kind of. Menstrual cycles are the result of rising and falling levels of different hormones. A side effect of these hormonal changes in some women is acne. If your breakouts more or less consistently occur around the same time of month, then you probably have hormonal acne. |

I do take calcium with a small amount of Vit D in it, but also take a D3 gel tablet daily as well. I like it better than the tablets. |

Very true and also some women can have very clear skin yet break out horribly during pregnancy due to raging hormones, perimenopause and menopause itself can cause break outs for some. I would say all are considered hormonal acne. |

Thank you, AnnieR. I noticed that the combo ones don't see to have a lot of D.
Ottawa Shopper, I believe most are taking D3. |

I think in the combo's they include just enough to help with absorption. To get true benefits from the D vitamin you are just as well off taking a Calcium only with a D3 supplement. IMO |

The extra bit that's in there doesn't make enough difference to me as it has magnesium as well. I like it because there are days when I just take the calcium, nothing else, so I still get my D!!! |

Agree, I could have worded my post better, I just meant for the D3 to take a separate supplement! |

My sister is friends with a compounding pharmacist. He gave his mom Vit D for her dementia and she improved massively, then he compounded a cream for her sagging face and that also so improved her skin that he's starting to market it.
I just called that pharmacy to get the details so my CFS dr. can write me a script, in the mean time she told me to try just using the oral drops on my face.
Vit D is really a hormone, just mis-named, it's going to be huge in anti-aging, I guess it already is. |

That's interesting. The oral drops are vit. D3? What kind of base are they in? Is it an oil eg olive oil? |

Yes I have oral drops and they are in olive oil, 2,000 IU/drop. I just called the compounding pharmacy and the pharmacist told me to have my dr. write the following:
Vitamin D 50,000 units cream, apply 4 clicks q day. 30 grams.
It's San Ysidro Pharmacy in Santa Barbara if you're interested, I get stuff from N.J compounding so I don't think it matters where you live, just need an RX for the compounded kind. |

It seems you could mix the drops into a serum/cream yourself, if you google Vitamin D3 liquid drops are available readily without an rx? |

I think it's the same deal as buying progestrone cream OTC, because you need to have 50 thousand IU per 4 clicks, you'd have to find a really high Vit D content, can you do that?
I know that with progesterone it's only legal to sell 2% cream, my CFS dr said you need at least 10%. She said you'd have to use a whole jar of OTC cream to get the dose you need.
Btt I'll check it out............ |

Secretly, I haven't looked into it to that extent yet either, so I need to research that more also! It was just a thought maybe not a feasible one??? |
